STILLETO - FAQ/BUG LIST (Unofficial) - Click HERE to go to the original thread with graphics
BigFeat
This thread is intended to be a running list of bugs encountered on the Stilleto and general FAQs. This information will be useful information for the Sirius engineers to gather in order for them to assess critical programming issues and devise patches for deployment.

ISSUE: INTERNET RADIO - “Channel Unavailable – Service Not Reachable”

After playing around with my Stilleto this morning I encountered the above error. The Stilleto tech support department could not find any troubleshooting documentation that specific error message. I was able to confirm that the unit found and connected to the network correctly. However, it is obviously not able to connect to the stream on Sirius’s side I presume.

FAQ: INTERNET STREAM - “128 kbps”

The Stilleto tech support department confirmed that the unit will connect to the “Internet Plus – 128kbps ” stream if your account is provisioned for it. Mutt communicated on the Stern Fan Round table that the unit only broadcast the low bandwidth stream which is associated with a free internet account. This is obviously contradicatory of what Sirius is stating so more feedback is needed on this.

The information on this thread is subject to change as more information is collected.

A very small number of people have run into this problem. They have solved it by one of these methods:

1. Setting their WiFi router to WEP or WPA security, it must transmit the SSID, it must use mixed mode(the Stiletto is a 801.11b device). OR

2. Changing the default configurations, password, SSID, etc. that comes from the factory. If a neighbor is using the same factory defaults, then the Stiletto will get confused and not work if the signal is overlapping. OR

3. Changing their Router to another routher. The Stiletto seems to have problems with certain routers, e.g. D-Link. OR

4. Exchanging the Stiletto at the store they bought it at. Some people have gotten their Stilettos to work just by returning it to the store and getting another one. Apparently some are not configured properly from the factory.

Give these a try and see if it works for you.

*UPDATE*

FAQ: INTERNET STREAM - “128 kbps”

I have still not been able to get a firm confirmation on what the bandwidth is. I was also told that the internet stream quality is equivalent to that of the satellite radio stream. However, there was no data provided for that stream bitrate quality. I don't know if the sat radio stream is broadcasting at 128kbps (cd quality) or if the internet streaming is equivalent.

ISSUE: INTERNET RADIO - “Channel Unavailable – Service Not Reachable”

I was able to get the Internet Radio to connect to my home router with no issues. I wonder if the other router (business) was blocking the stream some how. But if the stream is blocked I would presume that it wouldn't even connect to the router. There is no password entry required on that business router. I am able to connect my cell phone via WiFi to it and surf Sirius.com. So that remains to be seen.

ISSUE: HEADSET with BOOSTER

The headset is quite unconfortable. It really pinches your ear canal.

My biggest issue was that it wouldn't work with my Mac, so back to Circuit City it went.

Sirius hasn't added MAC support for any of there products. I think that is something that the sales rep should have informed you of.

FAQ - NO CHARGING INDICATOR

The unit does not display any charging indication with a use of a led or visual que. That is a design flaw as it potentially lead to a safety hazard. For instance, charging the unit with a frayed power supply, but not knowing there was a short because there are no indicators to let you know the supply is working properly. In addition, there is extra waste in the process for the consumer that waits 4 hours for the unit to charge only finding out that it hadn't charged.
BigFeat
Is the Green "+" sign visible when the LCD screen is off Genius?

Charging indicators are meant to visible through an LED window for several reasons. As made availabe in almost all electronic devices that may be charged while powered-off. Leaving an LCD on while charging does draw current from the charging circuit in the battery, thereby extending the amount of time it would have taken to fully charge. Not many users leave units powered ON while charging for that reason. Manufacturers are encouraged to provide a visual (hardwired) charging indicator to the end user that doesn't depend on the battery as a source.

This unit doesn't have any safety certification on it with the exception of the batteries. The battery icon charging indicator is software driven. There has to be a hardwired indicator (i.e. external LED source) as well for safety reasons. The visual battery icon should only be a supplementary cue. There are national standardized safety clauses that would require a line voltage powered device to employ this. For Instance: If there's a short in the power adapter you're shit out of luck if the entire unit becomes "live - 120V on the entire unit", and there won't be a hardwired fail-safe to indicate this. Seems like a short-cut Sirius made to shave some money off of this.

so it isn't seen as a "removable device" automatically???

bummer. that's not good.

Are the bugs for the Stiletto going to be resolved with new software updates or is there a new "model" in the works. I went through the issues with my S50 for some time. I don't want to buy the newest model until the feedback here seems to diminish.

How long should I wait?

Some of them will be software driven. I went throught the same issues with the S50 as well. It seems like they took some of the customer feedback and re-directed in the Stilleto. But if there are design flaws, no firmware patch is going to fix that. I think all this half-ass design is in part to keep up with XM's line of hardware and ofcourse, profit gains. Unfortunately, I think XM will continue to beat Sirius on hardware design and inovation at least for another couple years.

It is currently the best choice for a "portable" receiver with Sirius service. Although, your choice for a portable unit is only limited to just this one device. I can tell you it is better the an S50 if you already have one or thinking of it. The most steady units are probably still the Replays.

I had my for like 5 days now and ran into no problems that I couldnt figue out how to fix.

The internet radio works real good
The game Zone Sports ticker is a great feature for sports fans
The satellite radio works good when outside and chops up when you go in and out of a structures. Different types of structures will have no singal depending on what it was built with.

Over all if you planing on replacing your radio with the stilleto... I wont. But if you want to add it to your collection of sirius radios and spend alot of time around a wifi network or outside Its a great radio of you.

Definitely NOT a mistake!! You will love it! The Stiletto has ZERO bugs. There are features that would be nice to have down the road, but these are NOT bugs, their enhancement requests.

Get it, you won't regret it!! Everyone I know who has it, loves it. Try it for 30 days and if you don't like it, you can return it. But don't listen to anyone telling you it's a mistake, anyone telling yout this doesn't own one, or is XM-biased with ulterior motives.

If by this statement, you mean that you only have a Mac computer, then don't get it. It's not for Macs. But if you have a PC, the "removable device" issue is irrelevant.

The Stiletto has ZERO bugs. Comparing it with the S50, which I've also owned, would be a crime.

It's NOTHING like the S50, I've used it non-stop and I haven't found any bugs. It has so many features that it will take you many hours to play around with them and discover everything it can do. But one thing is for sure, it's NOTHING like the S50 in terms of quality and bugs. I haven't found a single glitch or bug, and I'm extremely impressed with how user-friendly it is. It's by far the best and most user-friendly satellite receiver out there. And the WiFi feature is amazing!!

With most stores, you have 30 days to try it out and return it if you don't like it. But I'm sure you will. So try it out risk free. Don't believe any of the negative reviews.

Are the WiFi issues not considered a BUG? Several accounts with users returning the unit, but the next one out of the box works.

I think you have ulterior motives. NO electronic device has 'no bugs' across the board when it first comes out, that's just part of the nature of electronic devices.

No, it didn't. I was hoping to ditch my Starmate and my iPod with it, but until that's worked out, I'll stick with what I have.

I have tested this unit on 4 computers now. One computer has the new Stilleto MSS software installed and another has the S50 MSS software. The other two computers have no MSS software installed. All pcs are running Win XP Pro w/ SP2 and Windows Media Player 10. My Stilleto will not connect properly to the computer with the Stilleto MSS software. The computer finds the device, however, it states that the drivers are no good and that the hardware isn't functioning properly. It is defined with a question mark under Device Manager.

The Stilleto works on the other three computers. Apparently, this device is recognized as a windows portable device so the drivers are native Windows drivers. Therefore, you don't even need the MSS software. I got more stability with the computers that didn't have MSS installed at all. I simply opened up Windows Media Player and sync the songs in the library with the Stilleto. I'm not sure why the computer that I actually followed all the steps (installed MSS software) with is having issues with the unit.

Thats funny. I just went to best buy and got the car dock. Right out of the box(and in the parking lot), the dock wasnt getting signal. I went to the back to the installation dept. and had the guy come to see. He went and got another dock (the only other one they had in stock) and it worked. So right out of the box, the dock was bad. Dont get me wrong, I love sirius and the stiletto but they make all the units so poorly. I also had the s50 and from february - september, I went through 5 units. Thank god that I bought the 4 year warranty. The last time I took back the s50 they said they were out of stock and would upgrade to the stiletto for free and transfer the rest of the warranty to the stiletto, so I made out big time. Just want to say this isnt a negative review, the concept is great but they really didnt put anything into designing and building any of the units.

I just bought my Stiletto last night and I absolutely LOVE it. I haven't encountered any problems.
Sirius Rich
C/NET just posted a review of the Stiletto and gives it an "Excellent" rating. C/NET does not give out Excellent ratings for a product with a bug list.

Maybe one of you guys can answer this for me about the Stilleto--I listen to recorded Stern shows on my S50 throughout the day when I get the chance.

The biggest drag is getting back to where I left off listening before--like 3 hours into a 4 hour show I have to fast forward for about 10 minutes to get there.

Does the Stilleto have an easy way to get back to the place you last listened to? Or do I have to fast forward through 6 hour blocks?

YES!! The Stiletto remembers the exact spot where you left off, even when the battery runs out or you remove the battery. So this is a HUGE improvement. Get it, you won't regret it.

That makes it worth it to me. Thanks.

Is it true there is no clock?

There is a clock but it is only displayed while you are setting up a recording.
