Instant Messages Can Leave Permanent Trail

LOS ANGELES -- The Congressman Mark Foley scandal is showing just how easy it can be to connect a so-called "anonymous" screenname to an actual person. As Digital 4.4 anchor, Mekahlo Medina explains, these days it's not hard to link a screenname to your personal information.
Following is a verbatim script from the on-air report
Mekahlo Medina, Digital 4.4 Anchor: It was the page's screenname, accidentally revealed on a news website, that took bloggers on a short internet hunt for information.
Daniel Garcia: I was waiting for that shoe to drop.
Medina: Daniel Garcia knew bloggers would be searching after the story broke.
Garcia: Bloggers at this point are like funnels. They get funnels of information.
Medina: And Garcia, who is a kind of internet pioneer, launching Web sites since the 90's, shows us how bloggers pinpointed the congressional page that we've chosen not to identify.
Garcia: He searched for the screenname and found a profile. The profile gave bloggers a first name. They went to the "Congressional Page Alumni Web site" and found out his last name.
Garcia: You can piece things together rather easily.
Medina: From there, bloggers found the page's college and his e-mail.
Garcia: And the e-mail contained his phone number... it's amazing actually!
Medina: Next, bloggers found the page's Myspace site, loaded with personal information.
Garcia: It's highly personal. You can find out where he's from, where he lived, his best friends name are here.
Medina: The page has hired a lawyer and now refuses comment.
Garcia: It's amazing how much data is out there.
Medina: Boy, is it ever.
Garcia: There’s a picture of you here.
Medina: Garcia found me on MySpace.
Garcia: I can tell you have 72 friends.
Medina: He found my age, hometown ...
Garcia: If you are from New Mexico, I can start looking in New Mexico.
Medina: Even my college alma mater.
Garcia: I could go searching there for alumni information.
Medina; Garcia says if you want it private, it shouldn't be online. That goes for instant messages, too.
Garcia: It auto saves my chat messages.
Medina: Nearly all Internet providers like AOL archive e-mails and messages -- even if you delete them.
Garcia: They can go to the aggresive tracking of every key stroke to checking emails, texts, and web pages you've surfed.
