Republicans talk tough, but it is painfully obvious that they can't (or won't) back it up with actual votes.

Via Bob Geiger, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America took a look at 324 legislative votes in the last five years which affected American troops and veterans. Legislative proposals included veterans' benefits, healthcare, and medical research dedicated towards injured soldiers (head injuries, etc.) Based on these votes, IAVA calculated which senators and congressmen had a history of supporting the troops, and which didn't, and graded them on a curve.

You can see the full results at the IAVA website, here. But Bob has put the Senate rankings in order of letter grade, and produced this handy chart. As you'll note, based on the over 300 votes the IAVA used in its calculation, all Senate Democrats have been more supportive of the troops -- when it comes to their actual votes, over the past five years -- than any of the Senate Republicans.

The IAVA is a nonpartisan organization. That the results -- who supports the troops, and who doesn't -- are so strikingly partisan is another demonstration of Republicans talking the talk, and the Democrats walking the walk.

Hillary Clinton supports the troops by telling them they're losing the war and fighting for an empty cause? demoralizing the troops this way gives you an "A" rating by some bullshit, clearly partisan organization. i didn't see senate democrats supporting the military when they all voted to slash funds and tried to cripple the armed forces in the late 90s

Yeah, he signed a bill for 700 mile fence on a 2000 mile border.

Man, come on, you know that republicans never address the issues, they only make statements that have nothing to do with what you're talking about. The biggest spin-artists ever. I don't trust democrats either, but the republican party as a whole has completely destroyed this country in the last 8 years and unfortunately the democrats have been a bunch of pussies who won't stand up to them. Republicans are bullying us. And, god forbid you should say something like that because you're un-american.... and un-patriotic for having an original thought in your head...

Matthew, I mean honestly dude, they all do that. You think they live on the salaries they're paid? Why do you think there's never a cost-of-living increase on their salaries but once every 20 years? They get so many kick-backs and lobbyist money and gifts. It's like endorsement deals for atheletes! Republican, Democrat, Independant, they ALL take money for passing bills etc. It's the American DREAM!

Show me a politician who ISN'T funded by some lobbyist group, and I'll quit my job and campaign them to be president on my own dime!

That's my point! They all do it! And they pretend to point the finger at the other guy!

Yeah!! Vote Libertarian!! Because even if you could convince every on SFN to vote for a Libertarian President, there are still enough backwoods country people who don't come on SFN who barely speak any form of English who will always vote republican. Or like my mom, who will ALWAYS vote democrat no matter what they say. So please! Throw your vote out like it matters!

Even if you got a whole state to vote Libertarian, the electoral college would still vote it democrat or republican anyway because they are on the take also.

I never said I agreed with Bush. I did vote for the stupid fucker but the alternative sucked worse. I just think the center to right is much better than the liberal left. I worked hard for everything I have and I believe some need a hand-up when times are tough. The problem I have with the left is this " your not responsible for your own actions because...( insert something bad that happen when you were a kid ) " mentality some have. When a 18 yr.old kid murders someone then Al Sharpton tells the press it's not his fault because he grew up poor and around violence. When 3 college kids are being railroaded because they are wealthy and white and the whore stripper is a blaek. The whole Duke case screams of liberal D.A. politics. Your and my tax dollars are being used to support people whom are in this country illegally while there are mentally ill citizens sleeping on the streets. Yeah Bush is a liberal when it comes to the borders and illegals, but the GOP as a whole would send those filthy fucks back where they belong. I also don't drink the "Kool-aid" I know the party isn't perfect but the idea of " Speaker Polosi" is one hell of a scary thought.

You seem like a pretty smart person so please allow me to tell you this without being offended. The problem with that way of thinking is called 'blanket generalizations' is that it's a false way of thinking. A fallacy, if you will. You can't lump all democrats into thinking they're only about blaming problems on some childhood illness or happenstance. Not all Democrats think that. The party's track record may SHOW that, but you can't NOT vote for a particular democrat candidate based on a PARTY's track record.

Same with Republicans. They don't ALL dodge the draft, do cocaine, use their daddy's influence as president to keep them out of trouble when they drive drunk and crash into a tree. You can't not vote Republican because of Bush.... even though it's hard not to.

I do agree with you on the generalizations. The problem with your opinion is this: If I vote for a Democrat that I feel has good ideas and beliefs. As a result of that vote do not support his GOP challeger who I think is a full of shit politician. Then when it comes time for votes on legislation that he said he would support the Leadership of his party twist his arm into voting the party line. If he doesn't fall in line then when he comes up for re-election he gets Liberman'd by his party. This is the extreme flaw in our 2 party system. Some say you could have the congressional votes private, but then how would the public know where their elected officials stand on issues. So while I agree with you in spirit I still like the GOP platform better than Dems. It sucks voting for someone you don't want to, as I did in 2004.

Absolutely!!! And now you're getting to understand my predicament. I hate every politician that has stood before me for years. I have decided NOT to vote. I can't find anyone I truly could endorse because of who they associate with or what they stand for. Everyone is on the take and no one cares about the people of America, they haven't for at least 20 years.

And please don't give me that "If you don't vote you can't bitch" speech. I've heard that for so long and it is the biggest pile of horse shit ever.

If you don't vote because your lazy, that's one thing.
But if you don't vote because you've exhausted your research and come up with NO candidates? That's another thing entirely, IMO

Hmmm. Interesting. Do you think term limits would help?

It seems to me that these people spend way too much time worrying about getting re-elected and not enough doing what they said they would.

One 4-year term and you're out. (6 for senators) I would also look into banning lobbyists from the debate altogether. There has to be some way to get rid of these fucking rats without violating the 1st Amendment.
I'm thinking maybe some sort of "national complaint box" where everybody has equal opportunity to be heard.

I dunno, I'm just spitballin'.
tbite69
It really is a problem with no realistic answer. Maybe we get rid of the political parties? They would just find a way to align themselves as conservative or liberal. The real problem is not just lobbyist but worse are the non-profits on both sides. The moral police on one side and the tree-huggers on the other. They are all full of shit. The far right gets caught in sex scandals and the enviro-wackjobs jump on private jets only to be picked up by 40ft. stretched Suburbans on the way to global warming benefits. The whole system needs fixed.

There is no fix, revolution solves nothing. Changing governments only disturbs the status quo. All governments are corrupt, and without governments, chaos and anarchy and police states will rule. The only solution is the lesser of all evils. It's extremely disheartening when you think that slowly but surely, we are moving further away from democracy and towards dictatorship. I hope Bush goes down in history as the worst president ever

Term limits, and get more of the money out of the election process. Publicly fund the campaigns, and require the networks to provide equal airtime to candidates as part of their licensing. That would at least allow the legislators to work on actual legislation during their term instead of spending so much of their time with their hand out.

I know someone will call me a racist, which I deserve most of the time but not for this. The problem I really fear is the border security. This country is spending way too much of it's resources on people in this country illegally. Our schools are spending money to offer classes such as English as a second language and free lunches for illegals. The government says we have care for these criminals. If I break in your house then you catch me. The police come and say sorry now that he is in your house the owner must pay for my kids education, food stamps, medical care and the homeowner must speak to me in my own language. The only way to get me out of his house is if I commit a felony of another nature. Next I have a kid in his house which means that he has to let my whole family stay and if he trys to make me leave thousands of my friends will picket his house and call him a racist. This is a travesty of epic proportions and this country will be more than 50% Hispanic by 2050. Sorry about the rant but I will support every Dem out there if they would take a hardline stance on this plauge

Well, we(whites) took it from the Native Americans to begin with, so the Hispanics are now taking it from us. *shrug* I don't have a problem with that happening if that's what happens. I don't necessarily think we(America) should pay for it to happen, but I don't see a problem with them being here. If we(America) are truly a FREE country anyway. Who knows? I think your scenario is a little exaggerated but it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility. This is another symptom of the lawsuit happy country we've become.

I assume you're talking about Republicans? As I've said a number of times, including in this thread, Republicans (at least today's republicans) are extremely good at dodging the question. They spin around and tell you some story about something that has nothing to do with the point your arguing... Pay no attention to the man behind the screen, they say.

What about the fact that oil companies are killing us on gas prices!!!???
Never mind that, Democrats want to RAISE TAXES!

*sigh* It just pisses me off that NOT ONE of these so-called 'journalists' and I use the term VERY loosely ever challenge anyone in office about that. They just go, oh, yeah, taxes.... DUH!

Absolutely! Now, try to organize enough lazy, fast-food eating Americans to go for that notion. Mind you they have to turn off Dancing with the Stars and stop going to see movies like Snakes on a Plane before they can do that. Then, you need to organize it QUICKLY before the current administration gets wind of it because they will throw you in jail for being anti-American and/or Terrorism.

Good luck brother! :hw:

Anyone concerned with border security should read " State of Emergency" it is backed up by strong factual sources. Not a GOP kool-aid book very critical of Bush

Did it just go down to $2.04? Wasn't it like $2.50 or $2.75 a while ago? I had a lady I work with come in just now and say... WOW I just went to Arco and the gas was $2.29/gal!

And I said, WOW, the government just got you the way they wanted to!!! They pay $75/bbl for crude oil right now (I think) and I dunno how much that is per gallon but it's nowhere near $2, it's probably closer to less than $1! So, they JACK up the price to over $3/gal! Then after a while, they lower it slowly, and still make like 125% profit even at $2/gal....

Let's not forget that gas used to be $1.50/gal when _I_ started driving about 10 years ago.

:hw:
The revolution will not be televised. It will be youtubed

Do you really believe the government is behind gas prices? 10 years ago oil was 22 bucks a barrel

Should I come to your job and say well instead of paying Angrychink $7 hr. we should only pay you $5 so my chicken fried rice is cheaper. If you don't like paying for gas walk or take public transportation.

And while you're learning something more than Retard, maybe also try researching another political topic instead of oil vs. taxes. 3 posts about the same thing is all I can handle unless you have more insight other than grunting
