Cubs offense much bolstered by addition of Soriano, still looking for power from the outfield.
Jim Hendry is not done spending.
Cubs pitching is far from complete, expect trade of Westbrook, or signing of Meche, Maddux, or possibly Schmidt, not Zito. (a fly ball pitcher)
Many rumors still flying around, Hendry and the Tribune will raise payroll...to increase the value to potential bidders.
Thread will be updated frequently throughout the offseason, continuing throughout the championship year.

Cubs have always spent money (they have been around $100M the last couple of years) they just end up with people who fizzle out unexpectedly or they just flat overpay.
I'd hardly say the Cubs created the shit markey. The Dodgers dropping as much as they did on Furcal last year and the money shelled out to A-Rod and pretty much any deal the Yankees have made the last 20 years have fucked up any sense of a market. |

assume he'll wait till after the winter meetings and gets a dollar amount offered by the Yankees before signing with anyone.
would be good behind Zambrano, a ground ball pitcher who can go late into games, even though he's not the same as he once was. |

No, Schmidt is a great asset for the Cubs BECAUSE of his prior arm problems. We'll spend the money, just not on the players we need. And, we LOVE to pick up injured players who were once great [i.e. Garcia-Parra, etc.]
Until the Tribune Co. sells the team, I honestly don;t believe we'll have a chance.

No way Cuban would move the team.
I like him because he understands how to be a fan. And that's what this team needs to win. The Cubs are too profitable, win or lose, so Big Business could give a shit if a championship is ever won.
Cuban would give a damn, and more importantly, if the Cubs won under him, it'd be another finger at Trump. He'd take us all the way within 5-6 years of buying the team.

Maddux signs 1 yr contract w/ Padres, Options could net him up to $10 mil.
It's not technically "Cubs" news, but Maddux will forever be considered a Cub. He's done so much for this team, he deserves every fucking cent he'll ever make, and success on whatever team he's a part of.
Hopefully, he'll come back to Chicago as a pitching coach, once he retires. I don't see that happening, though, until the Tribune Co. is sold, due to the bad blood between him and that shit company. |

Gil Meche would complete the rotation, or a far fetched possibility of Zito.

| 10 million a year for a guy with a career 4.60 era and 1 game over .500 career record. Start buying your world series tickets now this guy is great. Another guy that is a #3 pitcher at best and won't lead the Cubs to the world series. Be realistic you never heard of Lilly before the Cubs signed him and if you did you didn't consider him to be a top pither. |

well, there are some baseball fans here, including I, that know who Lilly is, and although he isn't a top "pither", he will be a solid #3 starter.
Considering we need starting pitchers and not offense, it's not a bad signing.
Wait to see where Zito ends up, then think of our rotation. ;)
and besides, Zambrano is leading us to the world series. |

| You would lucky if I was the Cubs gm. Anyway my Phillies just got Freddy Garcia for shitty Gavin Floyd who is alot better than Ted Lilly. Compared to your guys rotation as it stands to the Phillies I would take ours over the Cubs. What a great trade Floyd is horrible and Garcia slots into the #2 slot. Myers,Garcia,Hamels,Lieber,Eaton, and Moyer. 6 solid starting pitchers and now we can deal Lieber for some bullpen help. If we can get a solid 8th inning pitcher you better start ordering some phillies world series tickets,lol. |

Speaking of tickets, price increases this year... I heard up to $5 / ticket in the Bud Light Bleachers.
That may not seem like a lot, but the tix for that section were $40 last year... 12.5% increase for "fight to get a seat" tickets. :( |

SI just listed the cubs offense at #2, just behind the Mets. Real question is what the pitching will be, behind Zambrano it's a guess. Lots of wild cards (including Prior, Miller and Hill) are yet to be determined on health.
Soriano will help this offense reach a new height.

They're the same person.
Soriano and Sosa are both butchers in the OF, they're both whiff kings (Soriano was benched in the '03 WS for his unwillingness to take a walk or - like Sosa - at least refrain from swinging at pitches in the dirt or over his head). They are both horrible with runners in scoring position and they're both divas in the clubhouse. Oh yeah...and they both were given gargantuan contracts that already have or will soon handcuff the Cubs for years. Oh, but they'll put plenty of fans in the seats and sell plenty of jerseys though, isn't that what's important? |

They'll be better because if a team has any talent it all, it generally responds to a new manager's first year (see Busty Baker for an example) - and Piniella is not just any manager.
They won't however, go to the WS unless some savvy trades are made before the deadline. They've got a leadoff hitter who'll strike out more than anyone on the team, only one starting left-handed bat in the lineup - and he's a mope who has no idea how to run the bases, a starting SS who can't stay on the field, and unless Prior becomes productive again, their starting pitching is ridiculous (Ted Lilly as #2??). Oh yeah - but they just picked up Cliff Floyd! Whoopee-fucking-doo. Another guy whose best years came in the late 90's steroid era of inflated stats and juiced balls. Since then...??? |

As of today, the Northsiders are 15-4 in their last 19 games. Granted, it doesn't mean shit other than they're starting to play the kind of ball that was expected at the beginning of the year.
In an article in SI, Baseball Prospectus' "Secret Sauce" formula (OK easy with the cum shot lines) predicts the Red Sox and Cubs should meet in the World Series.

| The rumor is that MLB won't let Cuban by the Cubs, because he won't just bend over and do what they tell him to do. I would love for him to buy the Cubs. At least I know a good product would be put on the field every year. One of the other groups has a guy in it that is also part owner of the Brewers. If that is who gets approved I am crying foul. |

I'll admit I was wrong about Lilly he has been worth that 10 million while Garcia didn't do shit this year. Still with that being said the Phillies have a better record than the Cubs and I still think the Cubs will find a way to fuck it up in the playoffs if they make it.
Nice to see you supported your team all year long though. This thread wouldn't have been bumped if they weren't in 1st place of the worse division in baseball. |
