Larry Marmie? Why would they bring him back? I know your fondness of message boards, this was on devilsdigest.com
"larry marmie, 4 years, one (considered the worst coach at asu well...until now). "
I get Chow, but not sure McGinnis is the answer and going back to Marmie is crazy, even if he does well. Who is your choice for coach?
elroyjonz
McGinnis is a drunk, Chow is too busy with his restaurant,Mr. Chows , and who wants to be coached by their mommie...I mean Marmie. Sorry I'm just bored, no disrespect to your thread intended.

Sorry, didn't realize the rumor was all 3 coming to ASU. So then McGinnis is HC? Chow OC and Marmie DC? This sounds to good to be true. What about Danny White as QB coach? I know a ASU grad who wants Danny WHite, just becuase he hates UofA. White said of Tuscon, he holds his breath when he goes through. Which is funny, but not sure the only measure of a HC

Are they going to bring back Frank Kush too?

I think your only allowed to beat up a player once per program, so he used that up at ASU

You're right, the rumor is that all 3 would coach at ASU, with McGinnis at HC, Chow at OC, and Marmie at DC. I agree that Marmie is a terrible head coach, but he is great as a defensive coordinator. I'm still leaning towards Ron English, but these three would be unbeleivable, and would have some blue chips beating down ASU's door. I would love to get this worked out this week, because ASU has an unusually high number of scholarships to give this year.

Regarding White, there is a small percentage of ASU fans that will never be happy unless ASU hires Danny White as the head coach (these were the people that hated Koetter from day 1 because he's not Danny White). I have no problem with him, I would just like to see him get some NCAA coaching experience first (QB coach for ASU, offensive coordinator for a mid-major, etc.) Let him work a few years in college football, and prove that he can recruit high schoolers, and then maybe mention his name. Coaching an Arena Football team is a totally different animal than college football.

It seems like this would be a step back down for Chow. Why wouldn't he hold out for a HC job back in college? Or head back to USC where it seems every coach under Carroll is rumored to be talking to ASU. As for English, I thought ASU was leaning towards a HC experience? And see we can agree on something. White isn't ready to be a HC, no matter how much he hates UA. I did laugh when I read that Koetter said to tell the new coach beating UA wasn't enough. I guess saying that's what he was told, which seems to be pretty lame that 1) he thought that and 2) if it was true

I think that Chow is more the type of person that likes to hide in the press box like a mad scientist, and is not a dynamic personality (probably not a good "leader", but a great OC). Plus, he's apparently not happy in Tennessee, and the staff may be fired soon anyway. Lisa Love (ASU's Athletic Director) worked with Chow while she was at USC. As far as Sarkisian and Kiffin from USC, both of those guys want the ASU job, but both are like 31-32 years old. There's also the questions as to why Pete Carrol is so anxious to recommend them to ASU. I know that Kiffin is a great recruiter, and is USC's recruiting coordinator, but a squirrel can recruit the best class in the nation to USC year after year.

Ron English spent several years coaching and recruiting at ASU, and has a degree from ASU. He is an up and comer that is being groomed to become Michigan's head coach when Carr retires. He was regarded the best recruiter at ASU, and is now the best recruiter at Michigan. Everybody that has ever had contact with him loves the guy, from coaches, players and boosters. His wife loves the PHX area, and he really wants the top job here as well. This is why he's my top choice. I think he has connections to some great guys like Robin Phlugrad (sp?) that he would assemble a deadly staff as well. This is where I think a guy like Kiffin would fall short.

Take a few minutes to read this SI article on Ron English...

English makes more sense from a starting over standpoint. I like coaches who have ties to the school. Alumni usually give them more slack and don't turn so quick if things go bad. I actually like English better than McGinnis. But, I think Love is trying to go with someone with HC exp and English doesn't have it. I never understood why Chow wanted the NFL anyway. But maybe Chow and McGinnis are boys, but McGinnis other than HC with the Cards, what ties to ASU? But, I'm not sure defensive coach is the way to go. In the Pac 10, if you can't score you can't win.

I just read that Carroll might be intrested in the Cards job. Which would then bring Chow over if he does get fired from Tenn. That would explain why all the USC assts are looking to leave, since that job would go to a top notch coach not an asst, Spurrier anyone?

Carroll is looking to leave before the NCAA hammer comes down on USC with the Reggie Bush fiasco. He may have some inside knowledge about what's going to happen. I have heard that Chow is not too fond of Carroll, but that may just be another rumor.

This could wind up being part of a much larger pool of coaches being hired/fired/leaving. All of the following pro/college HC could move(besides Coker, Shula): Dennis Green, Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher, Kirk Ferentz, Greg Schiano, Pete Carroll, Kragthorpe.

What is Koetter going to do now since he got canned? I was surprised as hell a Koetter was a head coach at a large BCS school when I first heard that. His uncles are good ol' boys but they are pretty damn opinionated with bad tempers- a little rascist too. I found it hard to believe he would get along well with young African American players because of that. The family isn't known as the greatest athletes around here or that into sports either.

Ron English looks enticing. The whole Dave McGinnis/Norm Chow tandem is a wet dream. I do think that McGinnis would be a good recruiter with his southern hospitality. Wouldnt be surprised if a guy like Rick Neuhiesel or Dennis Erickson were given the job. There is talent on the team - Rudy Carpenter/Burgess, Torrain/Herring, Kyle Williams..Dexter Davis..that goofy white guy on defense with long blonde hair...this team could be better next year.
arizonasternfan
I think ASU needs to be honest with itself and the level of coach they can get. Going with LL comments on a powerfull resume, what about Bob Davie? I know he's not the best, but he is a big name, from a name school. Who I think lives in AZ. I know he hasn't coached in 5 years, but he did ok at ND. And it would be a coach who is used to high expectations. I think there are better OCs and DCs out there that would be better long term, but Davie would be a good prior HC. None of the big name HCs or former HCs are coming out here.
