ST. PIERRE-HUGHES 3? NOT SO FAST
By Loretta Hunt

Just twenty-four hours after announcing that newly-crowned UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre would defend his title in his native Montreal on April 7 against the man he'd just wrested the belt from, UFC president Dana White wasn’t so sure the mega match would happen then himself.

“I’m hearing word back that [Matt] Hughes might want to wait,” White told the press Wednesday following the highly-successful UFC Fight Night, held at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.

In the last week, the word has become more definitive.

"After discussing the future with Matt, it was agreed that it would be in his best interests to take a fight in between a rematch with St. Pierre,” Hughes’ longtime manager Monte Cox said this morning. “This way, he would have more time to train specific skills that would give him a better chance at winning back the title."

Cox said Hughes would prefer to fight on March 3’s UFC 68 card in Columbus, Ohio, a bit closer to his Illinois farm roots, then take the rubber match with St. Pierre at a later time. Champion St. Pierre is scheduled to face “The Ultimate Fighter” season four winner Matt Serra at UFC 67 in Las Vegas on Feb. 3.

“We’re going to Montreal in April no matter what,” reinforced White of the promotion’s Northern debut, suggesting last week that Hughes could match up with undefeated welterweight contender Diego Sanchez next.

Hughes’ manager Cox acknowledged that talks are still ongoing. Both White and St. Pierre were initially unavailable for comment today.

No matter how much Hughes trains he is going to get fucking destroyed again.

This is a smart decision for business here. More hype, and it gives Matt a chance to "earn" a rematch.

This is a good thing.

matt's more than earned a rematch by being the type of champ that he was... and if this article is correct, looks like he realized nothing's going to be different next time around unless he steps up his stand-up, however, I just don't see that happening in any period of time... gsp is a horrible match-up for matt, bottomline... and in mma, more than any other fight sport, styles factor in on the outcome in a big big way..
nickphilly73
gsp is a horrible match-up for anyone at this point, he is on top of his game big time right now, it would be nice to see maybe sean sherk step back up to welterweight to fight gsp but I think he's quite comfortable as lightweight champion for the time being
bazookahead
I'd like to see an inshape, motivated bj penn fight gsp again... I think he matches up very well... but asking for penn to show up in-shape is like asking kos to keep the fight standing, and I would agree penn needs to win a qualifier in order to do so... would love to see a penn vs diego match up with winner getting a shot at gsp...

gsp will be hard to beat and being an active, exciting fighter, should make for some good match-ups in the future...

Penn isn't fighting GSP or any WW anytime soon given his role in TUF this season and the emphasis on the LW division.
bazookahead
penn is one of the coaches on TUF? or a trainer? who is he coaching against if he is one of the coaches? didn't hear that but is good news... would love to see him hang around and stay active... being on TUF will set him up for an ensuing PPV at the least..

I think it's a bunch of bullshit how Hughes can just simply lose and get an instant rematch this isn't fucking boxing, he needs to go and fight 2-3 guys to prove he's worthy for a rematch just like every other champ that loses; after that ass pounding GSP gave him. It's gonna happen again so Hughes mise well get a lil extra jingle in his pockets while he can, next time GSP is probably gonna take him out fast then the last one which was pretty short. Hughes cannot battle with a top striker!
bluegraysky
JackTheHammer are you a fing moron?

Who would you like Hughes to beat to "earn" a rematch?

He defended his title 9 times and lost 1.

I suppose you want him to test his skills against the monster Diego Sanchez!!!!

Hughes getting an automatic rematch isn't a right it's a law. He has beat everyone in the WW division including GSP.

Yeah you never want to be a wrestler/GnP master going against a stricker

Hate to tell you but if you are a stricker Hughes or Penn are the last people in the world you want to face. That doesn't mean the wrestler wins every match, because they are wearing 4oz gloves and it only takes one shot. It simply means a striker wants to fight a striker and a wrestler wants to fight a wrestler.

Noob
sickbo
Diego Sanchez vs Hughes for a shot a GSP sounds good to me.

Sanchez will get destroyed by BJ, GSP, or Hughes.

Hughes fights 2 fucking time a year and his opponents were basically hand picked by Dana to ensure there lil poster hick keeps his belt. They sure gave St.Pierre the run around enough after he hands down earned his title shot, sure he was injured the one time and missed out but then had to wait a ridiculous time to get his shot. Hughes is pretty much a one dimensional fighter, with some very basic submission skills, I never said Diego would beat Hughes but Diego's undefeated and definately earned his shot at a contendership. GSP has evovled like MMA and Hughes is the same old guy, the only guy at WW with suburb striking ability is St. Pierre and I'd be willing to put money on it that we'll see the same results come a rematch Hughes can't stand up and can't take much of a punch as we've seen him stunned many times from just a simple head punch! Doesn't give the UFC much credibility to just go out giving guys who lose a 6 month layoff and then have them come back and fight for the title again, being Matt turned down the rematch for the PPV that'll be in Canada against GSP doesn't show much balls or showmanship on his part!

Back up your talk with something other then ,"it's the LAW!""" that's some bullshit if I've ever heard it! Noob??? Been with the MMA game for years bro!!

It's because Hughes bitched out, because it's not in the US, should be ok, 2 pretty good athletes going at it, I'd have to give GSP the early edge, if it goes to the ground who knows what will happen, Diego's like a damn snake.
thosefnguys
Diego isn't beating Rush.
ndhalogod
Just to clarify, Diego-GSP has not been announced and UFC 69 isn't even taking place in Quebec. The event will be held in Houston.

Damn, you are a noob. Basically saying Hughes is nothing but a 1 demensional fighter? Quit being a hater. Hughes was the most dominant Welter in UFC history. He fought everybody and lost to a hungrier, better athlete. Its GSP's time plain and simple, but don't discredit Hughes. The guys a legend for a reason.
