The Worst Stock for 2007: Sirius Satellite Radio
By Rich Smith (TMF Ditty)

December 21, 2006

If I told you that a certain company has diluted its shares at an alarming rate over the past three years, what would you say about it?

How about if I told you that this same company has burned through hundreds of millions of dollars in cash over the same time span and now has long-term debt of more than $1 billion? With the result that its book value has plunged from $1.16 per share to negative $0.14 per share?

Might you then agree with me that this stock is likely to be the worst-performing stock of 2007?

Meet the yo-yo
If so, then it may surprise you to learn that you are -- and I am -- in the minority. Because just 20 months ago, the stock that fits the description I've laid out above, Sirius Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI), was voted the best stock on the planet in the Fool's inaugural Stock Madness tournament. If you're not familiar with the company, Sirius, along with arch-nemesis XM Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: XMSR), is one half of what I've on occasion described as the " twin yo-yos of satellite radio." Like XM, the company aims to duplicate in radio the revolution that took place with cable television some 30 years ago -- charging a fee to provide higher-quality service on a formerly free product.

There was one for XM as the worst stock of 2007 as well. In the end, they will either:

  • Merge
  • Seek bankruptcy protection
  • Emerge from their cash position and make money

Unless some other technology comes along that has equal or better quality and is free from the clutches of the FCC, I don't see Sirius or XM going away any time soon.
gwarn1
I didnt buy becasue of Howard- I bought because I believe in it- if anything the Howard factor was a minus for me because if anything happens to him the stock will go down the shitter fast- Im figuring Christmas will be a disapointment and they will have to merge or be absorbed by another company.
bubbleboy
XM seems to have better radios, satellite coverage, and 1.8 million more subscribers, yet Sirius has the greater market value. Doesn't make alot of sense, and the stock might pay the price.

that means you shorted it then. cause of course if u knew for sure a stock was going down, u would have to be an idiot not to short it. and i say u did not short it :)

I didn't say I knew for sure dummy, quit reading in to things.

I read the article and to be honest they have a point. XM for isntance was expecting to have 9 million subscibers at the end of the year and they will probably only have about 7.7. The thing is that they were also expecting to have 20 million subscribers by 2010. I doubt that is going to happen. if this is true, then XM or Sirius can't really support their business model with eth amount of subscribers currently available. In other words, they might be fucked.
badshirt
2008 you'll see your profits.
mochinist
If stern wasnt there, I would never have satellite radio, the only time it is really great is if you are driving long distances. It is pain having to move the plug and play radios , paying for it sucks when I can get free radio or listen to music I have downloaded. Having it cut out when you go under a bridge or are in a drive thru also sucks. All so I can here them say "shit" and "fuck" whoopty doo

These are still start ups. Of course they are gonna have a pile of debt. They key is the automakers. More and more are building cars with satelite in them. The article goe son to mention that they are in abetter place then they were in April.

It's not a good stock, but it doesn't mean they are in trouble.

I bet Howard cashing out his 250 million in stock options really helped the share price out as well.
Glad I got out when I did. I only lost 1.50 per share. I think alot of people on this board are going to lose alot more then that. Lets hopr they can close the deficit so we dont have to have O&A
on after the Stern show. God that would suck really bad.
LongShoreman
Fairly accurate. I'm of the opinion Sirius will have to declare bankruptcy or they are going to HAVE to merge with XM. XM can hold out much longer financially than Sirius will be able to.

If they declare bankruptcy, are they still on the hook for Howards full contract??
I bet Don has such a good contract for Howard that if they do go under Howie will own all the remainig assets of the company. Don is a super agent

What makes Motley Fool right now? Wow, 20 months later and they are smart? Fuck those idiots. This is the same thing that happened ten years ago with dot-coms. Wall Street was in love with any firm that was an internet firm, then thousands of them tanked from poor management, but the internet didn't go away. Better companies emerged from the ashes.

This medium is not going away, folks.
!!!kaboom!!!
I guess they have 6 million subscribers, maybe half of which are paying the full price. I don't think that satellite will ever be wildly popular and beat free radio, just like HBO will never beat ABC. And I don't think "pay" radio is the same as pay TV. Most people like TV a lot more than radio.

I just don't think Sirius has been that smart with its marketing. If it fails, Phil Hendry better come the heck out of retirement.
King Of All Chris's
In the long run it's all about the internet. Right now it's about content. XM's lead came from GM's massive push of radios. I can't believe they were so stupd and didn't sign Howard.

i guess it's safe to assume that bubba won't get his pay raise and contract extension

At 14c a share now would be a good time to buy. Buy Buy I tell you.......
ruggertheretard
you make it sound like they can merge at their option. . . .there are huge anti-trust issues. In the short term they aren't going any where, there will just be some business reorganization. It just goes to show that you shouldn't take your stock advice from a guy who makes his living in comedy. Oh well, time to sell my 1-800-mattress stock.

When I saw Howard shilling radio's last week I knew something was'nt right! I think if they merge the technology, so you could choose between XM or Sirius on the same radio's like Cable, how you could choose HBO or TMC, That would save both companys billions. It would also make them give a shit about programming!

Good point! And don't forget, when was the last time Howard went on Conan? lol

It's funny how history comes back to bite you in the ass... I remember a while ago when Howard was making fun of that guy who played Mr. Peterson on Seinfeld. The guy went on Conan to promote "adult M&M's", and Howard made fun of him for it. He asked how anybody could stoop that low... Well now, welcome to the club, Stern.

What does Howard make. It started at $100 mil? for 5 years, now I'm hearing that per year. Anyone know the latest?
jasonsorsborn
I've had Sirius for 2 years and stock for almost a year and I think both XM and Sirius have a long way to go. i hate to say I probably still listen to testicle radio 75% of the time. Sports shows and personalities I listened to before.

I'm pretty sure he got $500 million for 5 years and tons of stock.
!!!kaboom!!!
I have to admit, I like satellite radio a lot, and would probably pay $20/mo., just for the clearer reception and the commercial-free music.

But satellite is only really useful for people who drive a lot. I see a lot of these radios in cars on Long Island, where we all commute a ton.

$8 mil per month. 6 mil listeners at average $10 = $$60 mil a month. Even with another $20 mil per month going to other talents on other channels, where the fuck is the $ going?

They need to merge ASAP and stem the insane rate of cash burn and the tremendous build up of debt. There WILL come a time when both will be so mired in debt that even a merge cant help them. I'm not sure anyone really knows what terrible shape both these companies are in.

I suppose i should have mentioned that he bought 4 mil in stock the same day. The classic sell high buy low deal.

Really? Sounds like a tax move, the stock is such a stinker and there is no hope of it going up so they sell at the end of the year and take the tax loss. After the loss he then buys some shares back at almost the same price as he sold and - VIOLA a "paper loss.
mudder
There is no way to know which direction a company will take, stock is always a risky issue, some companies succeed, most do not. But in the case of sirius too much money has been spent to get this running, I don't see sirius going anywhere, a name change perhaps. satellite radio is here to stay. FTE will help to keep it going.

In the matter of Howard going on Letterman and Conan, its marketing and it does take time. How many of you wish you had purchased google stock when it first was offered. No one says you have to do anything, its a personal choice. Not to mention does anyone remember microsoft?
got1toburn
Dropping fast i sold.

This may very well be the most ignorant post on all of SFN, and that is saying something. Of course you can tell which way a company is going - It is called balance sheets and financial reporting, Sirius may have the very worst on earth.

LOL!!! So what? Once you spend a certain amount of money you are "saved" from going under? Thats exactly the problem - Too much money was spent getting this going, its why they are in such bad financial shape - and they may NOT make it at all.
