| I've only been watching football for about 7-8 years, but I have noticed a change in the opening kick-off. It seemed like the team that won the toss would always elect to kick, in order to get the ball in the second half. Now it seems like the winning team elects to recieve. What has brought about that change? |

after the 911 attacks, teams are aware of the possibility that a terrorist event might take place before the third quarter, thus eliminating the advantage of 2nd half kick-off reception. I think that's your answer. |

NCAA and NFL are different. When a teams wins the opening toss in NCAA, the 3 options they have are to kick or to receive or to defer the option to the 2nd half. When you win the opening toss in NFL, you only have 2 options: to kick off or to receive. You don't have the option of deferring the option to the 2nd half in the NFL. Hope that helps. |
