So what do you guys think about this? More of the big guy sticking it to the little guy. A sad day for Daytona race fans.

Daytona Shrinks RV General Admission Infield And Alienates Race Fans!

After more than 50 years of NASCAR racing and infield parties, the Daytona International Speedway has decided to shrink the general admission RV parking in the speedways infield. In years past, fans could show up at the track and buy a weekly infield race ticket for $245 and then pay an RV parking fee of $300. But not this year!

Beginning with the 2007 Daytona Speedweek’s, DIS will offer an RV reserved “Red Zone” and an RV reserved “Yellow Zone”. Reserved spaces in these zones will cost race fans $1,350 and will be limited to a 20’x40’ space. There is also a ten person limit on each space. Each spot comes with two infield tickets for the week, a value of $490. That puts the cost of the 40’x20’ plot of grass at $860. And by the way, there are no RV hook-ups. That means no fresh water, sewage, electric, or cable! The land they are using for these reserved spaces used to be for the general admission RV’ers. But, since the General Admission space is now so small and so limited, fans will be in danger of driving all the way to Daytona only to be turned away at the gate because the general admission area is full.

Daytona’s infield is legendary. For decades it has been known as the ultimate NASCAR party destination. Fans from all over the country work hard and save money all year just to make the annual trip to Daytona for Speedweeks. Over the years I have had the pleasure of meeting race fans from nearly every state and most of them have been good, hard working fans with a passion for NASCAR and a passion for the high banked turns of Daytona.

For many of these fans, the Daytona 500 is their annual vacation. It is the one event that they save money for, the one event that they put in all of that over-time for, and the one event that they can count on each year to make the previous year’s hard work all worthwhile.

Over the past twenty years I have met fans with $250,000 motor coach’s, rented RV's, old beat up school buses, pick-up trucks with scaffolding platforms built on the truck beds, and fans who slept in tents. These fans are the heart and sole of NASCAR and they are the reason the Speedways and the drivers are making the enormous sums of money that the sport now enjoys.

But unfortunately, the once affordable Daytona infield is no more, and the fans that have made the sport what it is have been left out and forgotten as Daytona transcends it’s legendary infield. And for what reason? Money of course!

It’s too bad that I won’t get to see “Redneck” Roy from Jackson, MS and his 1962 Winnebago. We first met Roy when he showed up in the Daytona infield in 1997 with his old beat up RV, two chickens, a loaf of bread, three cases of beer, and a bag of oranges he bought from a Florida roadside stand. Roy works over-time as a telephone repairman and saves every penny just to make the annual trip to Daytona Speedweeks. But not this year, Roy can’t afford the $1,350 reserved space and he is afraid the tiny general admission lot will be full when he arrives from Mississippi and he will be forced to turn around and head home.

Roy is just one example of the thousands of race fans that will be shut out by Daytona’s restructuring. It’s too bad that our beloved sport has been taken over by money hungry executives eager to get another million or two out of their fan base. Race fans deserve more, not less from the leaders of DIS. These are the fans that have supported the sport for decades and the DIS has turned their backs on them for the all mighty dollar. – CTR
