Cubs' Samardzija commits to baseball
Standout wide receiver at Notre Dame forgoes football career
MLB.com

CHICAGO -- Jeff Samardzija, whom the Cubs selected in the fifth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, will forgo the National Football League Draft and commit to a baseball career.
"I am pleased to announce that today I have reached an agreement on a five-year Major League contract with the Chicago Cubs," Samardzija said in a statement. "Consequently, I will devote my full time and attention to professional baseball and forgo a potential career in the National Football League."

The right-hander's deal includes club options for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Samardzija, who will turn 22 on Tuesday, went 21-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 50 career appearances, including 31 starts, at the University of Notre Dame. In seven starts across two Class A levels with the Cubs in 2006, Samardzija posted a 2.70 ERA.

Samardzija finished his football career at Notre Dame this year as the program's career leader in receiving yards with 2,593 and receiving touchdowns with 27.

"I want to thank the Chicago Cubs and the Tribune Company for helping make this happen," Samardzija said. "I want to especially thank [general manager] Jim Hendry. His belief in me and my passion for baseball never wavered.

"In closing, I want to let Cubs fans know that I am committed to their team and their goal -- to bring a World Series championship to this great franchise. I only hope I can be a part of that someday."

Samardzija is expected to begin the season at Class A Peoria under new manager Ryne Sandberg, according to the Chicago Tribune.

I though he would pick football over baseball, but I guess not.

I had no respect for him, he was a showboat on the field.

Let's see how great he is in the pros.

kinda surprised, unless he's a sick baseball prospect ...of course, ND guys get their asses kissed even if mediocre.

He is one of the top pitching prospects for the Cubs. He was drafted in the 5th round and would of went higher if he didn't play football. He throws 95 mph and has good stuff. He has the potential to be a #2,3 starter in the majors or a top closer.

Wrong choice. As a Cub, he's destined for a career on the DL with "undisclosed shoulder tenderness". Of course, he'll also get paid millions to lift weights for a living.

What kind of name is that, Samardzija?
nedmark61
best of luck 2 him.....guaranteed 8 million......even a buckeye could see the advantage of that......

The signing of this picture should have been mentioned in that thread.

IMO, he'll be the next Drew Henson. Here are his stats from last year:

Jeff Samardzija.. 4.33 8-2 15 starts 97.2 innings .272 opposing batting average

This guy has the nerve to compare himself to perhaps the greatest athlete I've ever seen?

There's only one Bo. I know Bo. Bo knows Bo.

Jeff Sjtuszakla, or whatever his name is, is definitely not Bo.

Smart career move he's bound to make more money in MLB. Then in the NFL and his career will be a lot longer

agreed... never really thought he'd be a #1 or #2 receiver in the NFL and why bother with the 2-3 year shelf-life the NFL offers... take the money, sit on your ass and devour sunflower seeds...
welkdude
There's a bigger ratio of mullets in baseball than in football....

He's a perfect fit....a Notre Dame loser playing for the losers from the North Side

Did Brady Quinn break up with Anal Jockey Hawk's sister and get with this queer yet? The Golden Homos would go crazy.

I can see it being reported on NBC...

"Greatest quarterback ever, Brady Quinn, has announced his love for the best female to ever play D1 football, Jeff "Call me Sarah and don't be too rough" Samardjiza. Now back to Charlie Weis discussing recruits while eating 45 pounds of Catholic-blessed pork."

Baseball money is better and is guaranteed. No brainer.
