BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox and J.D. Drew finally resolved their wrangling over the outfielder's five-year, $70 million contract -- more than seven weeks after agreeing to everything except what to do about his surgically repaired right shoulder.

A baseball official involved in the negotiations said Thursday that the language had been agreed to. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because an announcement had not yet been made.

Drew's agent, Scott Boras, did not immediately return a telephone message, and Red Sox spokesman John Blake said the team had no comment.

The Red Sox reached a tentative agreement with Drew on Dec. 5, but the deal was delayed over possible damage lingering from September 2005 shoulder surgery. After wrangling for weeks -- interrupted by the holidays and Boston's pursuit of Japanese ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, another Boras client -- the sides agreed on language that would allow the team to opt out of guaranteed money in 2010 and 2011 if a specified pre-existing injury recurs.

The language is similar to that in Magglio Ordonez's deal with the Detroit Tigers. Boras and the players' association agreed that if the Red Sox exercise their rights under that language, neither Drew nor the union would contend that the language is unenforceable.

Drew takes the place of longtime rightfielder Trot Nixon, who played his entire 11-year career in Boston but agreed to a $3 million, one-year deal with the Cleveland Indians last week. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said after confirming the tentative agreement on Dec. 5 that Drew fits nicely into right field and the No. 5 spot in the lineup, behind David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez.

"With David and Manny, if they want to walk those guys, we want them to pay a steep price," manager Terry Francona said then.

Drew, 31, has had injuries throughout his career, but he played in 146 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season and hit .283 with 20 homers and a team-high 100 RBIs. He became a free agent when he opted out of the last three years of his five-year, $55 million deal with the Dodgers.

The Red Sox eagerly pursued him.

Drew's deal calls for annual salaries of $14 million.

Jd Drew has alot of talent , but is an unmotivated ,unemotional , injury plauged player. I'm just happy he is not in Dodger blue anymore.

Red Sox payroll, adding in the extra 10 million a year for D Mat, will be very very close to the Yanks, taht is until we sign Clemens.

I would rather see that stiff in RF Trot Nixon, but if they think JD is an upgrade for 120 games or so in RF at 14 million per, then that means they have NO $ left to get a CF because Coco SUCKS......So, JD doesn't not make the Sox a Wild Card team. I remember Theo saying Coco was a young Damon with a better arm, HAAAAAAAAAAAaaa

People fail to forget the sox are a 3rd place team, the have a long ways to go and must overspend and over-manage, so, they don't scare me or the Yanks one bit..

This is GREAT news for the Red Sox and Red Sox fans because now that THAT is all out of the way, the team can finally focus on not winning the division. Again.

Why is it that you New England guys always go RIGHT to the gay fantasy stuff? I notice you don't have a problem with how little there is to be added by guys like yambag and elroyjonz.
I understand Sweetie... you're upset that the Patriots blew it, the Red Sox finished behind a Canadian team in the AL that no one expects ANYTHING from and your Celtics are even worse than the Knicks (which actually IS quite an accomplishment). But there's no need to get all pissy Sweety Pea.

Lets not go overboard. I THINK I would rather be in the Celtics situation then the Knicks. At least they are not in salary cap hell.

I wish he would go back to LA and make the Dodgers suck more

I'm only referring to the Celtics being in the basement of the Atlantic. Believe me, the future is much brighter for the Celtics and it frustrates the hell out of me that both Boston AND the Sixers aren't doing A LOT better.

red sox just don't get it - poor bastards

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, it's the same story from you everytime. Why don't you just come out of the closet and admit you're a Sox fan? You talk more about them then we do.

I don't agree with this signing other than the fact that Nixon has never been able to hit lefties and Drew has slightly better numbers. Plus he is injured about the same amount as Nixon was every season.

We don't need to get another CF because Coco deserves another chance at it. He was injured most of last season and when he was on the field he still wasn't 100%. Healthy he should prove to be a decent player.

As for finishing third, lets wait until the season is underway. This team is going to be good. I know you guys have a string of 10 pennants in a row, but with the WC, that doesn't mean much anymore. All you need to do is make the post season.
hobbs47
The next big hit JD DREW gets will be the fucking FIRST!!
This guy has stolen money in every city he has played in.At least he'll be able to hide in the Sox lineup.
nuge67
He will be a bust, I love it!!!

Which is very similar to many of the *ahem* Red Sox fans... Count how many Yankee threads are active right now and you'll notice who started them. When elroy, yambag and kingofallmults admit their love of the Yankees, then I'm sure we can all admit our love of the Red Sox. Who DIDN'T make the playoffs. Or even their usual 2nd place behind the Yankees.

Wow, easy there tiger, and apologies for the misunderstanding. The guy I was referring to is Kingofallmedia, formerly known as 'BostonRedSox'. Hell, maybe he has been forced to use yet another new username after that thing Nuge posted about Mutt assraping him on here.
And I'd never accuse you of being a mult-even though we argue (or something similar to it) you don't do the douchebag shit that the former BostonRedSox resorts to on here. Yet another reason I have 100% intolerance for Red Sox 'fans' and don't have a problem with Mets fans.

Very dumb contract. Red Sox are in love with his OBP. Why can't they see that this guy melts in the spotlight? He'll only play for a single season with the Red Sox, then they'll realize they made a big mistake, and deal him for shitty prospects or a middle reliever.

Hummm, good points, reminds me of another Red Sox BUST, the one Theo said was a younger, faster Damon with a better arm, Coco...Too bad this stain can't get on base or stay healthy, good job Theo. Theo stood around at the trading deadline last year and did DICK, this cost the Sox a shot at the Wild Card. Now he is in panic mode trying his hardest to get out of 3rd place, I LOVE IT!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAaaa

Sox fans, how do you all really feel about Drew?

Honestly now, knowing his injury history and what not.

I can tell you, when the Yanks signed sheff, I was pissed. When they brought Randy aboard I was even angrier.

So, honestly, what are your opinions on this?

The Red Sox 'fans' are busy photoshopping pictures of A Rod to make him look gay, so they can have new pics to post in all of the Yankee threads they'll be posting. They don't have time to actually form a thought on anything to do with the Red Sox
