I don't know if I like the Todd Helton trade. I like having Youks at first, and I'm a big Lowell fan. Plus, that's more resources that could be used for possible mid-season trades. Lowell has one more year on his contract, ride it out, and deal with third base next off-season. Lowell should've won the gold-glove last season, but was screwed out of it.
If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Fuck 1st and 3rd base, the last I checked, we still don't have a 2nd baseman. Concentrate on that for fucks sake. |

In the batting order, youlk/helton may look better but in the field, Lowell at 3rd doesn't get much better with youl at 1st. That Red Sox infield is very weak on the D side and if Lowell goes, YIKES. And Helton worries me because not on has he played in the rockies, but his #'s have gone down over the last few years and the Angels balked at a trade because of worries with HElton's back.
If they get Helton, I bet we see Helton and Drew on the IR at the same time, and that my friend, will not be pretty.
As far as tavarez, I said he did what was asked of him and he is a plus in the pen, is he a a stud, no, but you know you can at least give him the ball. |

Well, Manny and Papi, (if he stays healthy) is a given, then there are holes galore...No one on the Red Sox other then Manny and Papi strike fear in a pitcher. Hell, the Red Sox were ranked 15th in overall hitting last year, THAT IS SOLID?

Tek was the glue of the red sox, the guy who came up with the BIG hits, as with all cacther who get old, his stats came to a screaming halt. The sox miss Tek's bat a great deal and even Terry said that. Coco and Tek KILLED the sox last year and I don't see them improving this year.

As long as we have a good bullpen, a good closer(not determined yet), injuries don't kill us(like last year) and no keith foulke, we have a hell of a chance with the current roster. At this point, the yankees don't have a real dominant roster(pending trades and late signing). With management on the same page(so it seems at this point), I see this season looking good. At least we have a GM during the off season to ensure players know what the priorities are.
This looks much better than the last couple years. |

I wonder how many at- bats Willie Mo gets this year. If he remains healthy, I say he gets 400 plate appearences this year easy. I hate seeing Coco in C.F. or let me re-phrase that...I don't enjoy watching the guy hit. I think that you must depend on a certain level of offensive production from your C.F. that this guy cannot provide. Drews' #'s will exceed Nixons in 06', so they will get more runs there, but Crisp needs to be able to hit at least 25 H.R.'s as the starting C.F. |

Whatever you want to call it, it's important to note that as far as Papelbon himself was concerned, Saturday's electric two-inning stint against the Phillies was a start, not a relief appearance.
Papelbon came on for Tim Wakefield and treated the third and fourth inning like it was the first and second. Then again, it looked a lot like the ninth innings that he pitched a year ago. Whatever the role, Papelbon can bring the heat.
In this one, he sent down all six batters he faced, striking out four......................

Toronto's has 3 solid starters this year, minus T. Lily. Santana should have another great year as well...contract year. Although Schilling has never pitched well in a contract year. |

Red Sox rotation has just as many of not more question marks then the Yanks staff...Pen and closer, the Yanks PISS on the Sox. Even if Mo goes down, FArnsworth is better then any closer the Sox have............ |

Gyroball makes ‘debut’: Matsuzaka dazzles Marlins hitters
JUPITER, Fla. - The gyroball exists and Daisuke Matsuzaka throws it, at least that’s what a couple of major league hitters were left thinking yesterday.

Who’s going to have a big year?
In Matsuzaka’s Red Sox [team stats] debut against major leaguers, two Marlins - Jason Stokes and Jeremy Hermida - said they saw a pitch that had movement and action unlike any other pitch they had ever seen before.
Hermida saw it three times, Stokes once and the UFO broke down and away to the left-handed hitting Hermida and in on the hands of Stokes.
The ball spun in a clock-wise direction, or reverse to what they are used to. It had a screwball-like rotation that left them shaking their heads.
Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell said Matsuzaka’s changeup was the pitch they actually saw but that was not what the Marlins called it.
“It’s a pitch that’s somewhere between a changeup and a splitter but it’s got a sideways spin,” said Stokes. “It’s like a split, but it’s slower, more movement.”
Stokes had one at-bat against Matsuzaka, a seven-pitch plate appearance with the next to last pitch being the supposed gyroball.
“He threw four different pitches to me - a fastball, slider, gyro and curve,” said Stokes. On the gyro, “He threw it up and in. I could see it was obviously a ball right away. I’m thinking ‘Get out of the way.’ It kind of backs up on you.”
Hermida encountered the pitch three times. He affirmed Stokes’ version that it was a gyroball, saying it was somewhere between a changeup and split-fingered fastball.
“It looks like a split, but it’s slower,” said Hermida. “It didn’t have the same spin as a split. It had its own unique character.”
Hermida saw Matsuzaka turn his wrist over in a screwball-like manner, which gives the ball its reverse spin.
“It’s got a good, hard and downward break but comes out with more speed than a changeup,” he said. “It comes out of the hand good and then it just dies on you.”
Hermida hesitated to use the word “gyroball” but he clearly had no idea what it was.
“I think that it is what it is, but it might not (be a gyro),” he said.
Stokes took his “gyro” for a ball. Hermida popped up both times and took the other for a strike.
The believe-it-or-not “gyro” was part of Matzusaka’s three scoreless frames in a 14-6, 10-inning win. Dice-K gave up two hits, struck out three and walked one.cw0
Farrell said Matsuzaka “turns over” his changeup, which accounts for its spin and unconventional movement as well. He did not hesitate to single out the pitch that Hermida and Stokes saw as Matsuzaka’s changeup.
“That’s how (his changeup) moves,” said Farrell.
The gyroball was invented by a pair of Japanese scientists trying to devise a new and unhittable pitch on their computer. They concluded the pitch behaves the exact opposite - breaking away from righty hitters and into lefties - from what Farrell describes as Dice-K’s changeup.cw0
The scientists published a book about it, and at last year’s World Baseball Classic, in which Matsuzaka was named MVP, he became associated with it. He has since been coy, never completely denying it since being signed by the Red Sox.
Matsuzaka, of course, has nothing to lose and everything to gain by getting inside the heads of major league hitters, letting them think he’s got a gyroball up his sleeve.
As far as he and the Red Sox are concerned, an imaginary gyroball is just as good as a real one. |
