Growing up in the Northeast, we never watched or followed Nascar.

Now it's everywhere.....ESPN is starting to cover it like they do the NFL.

What is the appeal of Nascar? Watching cars go around a track sounds boring to me.

Is it more about the social aspects? Hanging out with buddies, drink beers, etc.....?

I can't say that I have seen an actual race..........
Artie's needle
Not much to explain, pick a car, watch it go in circles and drink beer till it crashes.Wake up Monday morning with a hangover and go to work.

I had a college friend who was a regular dude, no hillbilly, and he went to all the major things Superbowl, Ncaa etc, and said the Daytona 500 was the best thing he ever went to.

I dont see it. I would rather watch Poker

Just like any other sport, it seems pointless until you get to know what's really going on. There are so many variables to setting up a car and adjusting it to a racetrack, rivalries, etc.. I've been going to races since the early 90's. I've gotten many people hooked on racing who just didn't get what it was all about until they gave it a chance.

Not a fan but went to two races one in Michgan and Alabama. I had a great time everytime. One cool thing is you can bring your own cooler into the track. I had a 30 pack of Busch Light. :)

Put me down in the I don't understand category

word!

could not have said it better myself.

you have to experience a sport and then learn its ins and outs before you can decide if you would like it or not.

I haven't decided yet if I like it or not. That's why I posted this thread.....to learn a little more.

I used to go to the Preakness every year. They let you bring a cooler and everyone would get wasted and party all day. That's what I assume goes on at races.

Nascar's been sold sold out since about 2000... 1998 probably started it, with the 50 year anniversary hype... and then Earnhardt died, FOX took over for ESPN(which had it back in the day) and TNN who covered the series with a grassroots approach. The cars have evolved into IROC (all the same) cars, with a bunch of PC drivers who are lucky enough toget a "seat" and will basically get on their knees to keep that seat. 1 in 43 (or so) is pretty tough odds to make. Nascar's changing, probably peaked...at least in my mind. There are no 'good ol boys'...those that seem to be are very, very, very, rich good ol' boys...take a ride around Mooresville, Charlotte area where all of the teams are based...what a joke. More corporate than Wall Street.

See I have never been to a Nascar race, but the Preakness on the other hand is a friggin party, like Mardi Gras in the middle of a horse track

Get near one of those things when they fire an engine, then get back to me. Go 2.

You can also learn a lot by listening to NASCAR Radio on Sirius 128!

I would not call myself a die hard nascar fan, however I do enjoy the sport from time to time. For anyone interested in becoming a fan, you must first decide who you like as a driver, just as you would in any sport. You may like a driver because of his team, his attitude, etc... Generally the way a guy drives will make you love him or hate him. for example if you like wreckless drivers who give it their all regardless of the outcome, you may be a fan of tony stuart, or dale earnhardt. If you like more of a thinking man's driver so to speak, you may go with jeff gordon or jimmy johnson, if you are looking for a more expierienced driver you may want to go with mark martin, or dale jarrett.

The point is, you must first decide on a team/driver you can enjoy watching. Next you need to decide what type of race you want to see, speedway, road course, etc...

Personally I like watching super speedway races, they tend to have more accidents, and more exciting finishes than the others, but that is just my opinion.

One major fact that I have not seen anyone post is that actually going to a race is a million times better than actually watching one on tv. I have been to Lowes motor speedway about 4-5 times in my life for the coca cola 600, and it is a blast everytime, weather permitting of course!

I would suggest to anyone who doubts if they would like nascar, go to at least one race before you knock it. If nothing else, usually across the street from the track on race day there are a million things to do. Every team and sponsor usually have demo tents set up where you can go get free samples of products and play games and win stuff.

Anyone who says racing is just turning left for 3 hours is generallizing the sport, I could say basketball is nothing but a bunch of tall guys running back and forth on a court for an hour, etc... Truth is nascar is not for everyone, and yes there are a lot of rednecks that like the sport, however not everyone who watches is a redneck.

:)

Same way people describe football as a bunch of overgrown steroid pumpers killing each other for a little ball. Shows how much you do not know.
johnnyct8285
my dad likes it, i got a friend who is obessed with it, i just dont get it. if i wanna watch car go by, i'll go sit near the highway. i'm pissed there was no ATH or PTI this week because of it.

yea i cant get into it, i suppose if your really into cars then the mechanics can be appealing, like gear ratio's and shit. but its like watching someone paint, then watching it dry.

The daytona 500 was reason enough to watch nascar, although my favorite (Dale Jr.) got knocked outta the race. The finish was great! Anyone else agree?

Awesome race. The last 50 or so laps you could feel the drivers getting more intense.

I heard a local radio guy explain the growth of this sport very well. They just have discovered how to present everything, the drivers(humility on their part as millionaires, but still rivalrys exist), the cars, the camera angles, the team audio(now Directv has the channels devoted to in car video for specific drivers), the weekly pre race and everything other sports wish they had. When a race comes to town, the drivers are making appearances left and right. Go to one or get into a ride along at a Petty School and you'll see why this sport is now huge.
Sun Devil
It's the right turns going on all over the track that make the sport interesting
