Thomas was the best available free agent this year. Being a Jets fan, we don't expect you to know that. Keep on rooting for those Jets big guy.LOL The Jets know what they are doing, the Patriots don't...hahahahahaha

the do not spend money just for the spake of spending money ala the Redskins. there is alot of thought behind this.. Pioli is one of the best in the business for this reason....

I dont know how much more a front office can do to impress someone like Nuge... the pats could sign Jesus H. Christ to play WR and he would question the logic somehow...

Not signing Branch is making more sense to me now...

If they can get this deal done and get in some depth it will be a fun season.

I will say the one thing the realllly seemed to miss this past year was a playmaker on Defense. They missed that with the aging of Bruschi and to me, a lesser extent, the lose of McGuiness...

You're right on the money. Thomas is that huge #1 guy they need on defense.

Now they just need a #1 receiver and this team is pretty much complete save another RB to replace Dillon in that brusing grind out the clock roll.

They also resigned Billy Yates to a 3 year deal.

They're locking shit up left and right. I'm starting to think all this cap space, letting Branch leave, etc, was so they'd be able to set things up for another stellar 3 or 4 years.

What a stupid prick....Go suck some cocks in the other threads, what's wrong, did you wear your knee pads out? YOu thread is aboutthe PAts of 2006 that CHOKED..

This thread was made to provide a forum to dicuss all the off-season moves and events regarding the Pats, like this.......
The Patriots have reached an agreement in principle with former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas, among the premier players in the unrestricted free agent pool, and the seven-year veteran appears to be a perfect fit for coach Bill Belichick's trademark 3-4 defensive scheme.

Thomas has 28½ sacks over the past three seasons, with a career-best 11 sacks in 2006.

Thomas, 29, will have a physical examination on Saturday, when the contract is expected to be finalized. Financial details of what is believed to be a six-year deal, the principle elements of which were agreed to Friday, were not yet available.

But Thomas, who played for Belichick in the Pro Bowl last month, almost certainly will be one of the highest-paid players in free agency. Rated by ESPN.com as the No. 2 unrestricted player available, Thomas figures to land guarantees totaling at least $15 million. There is speculation the contract will average $10 million per year.

OUCH to the salary cap

he got $6 mil in guaranteed money- that's very different from $20 mil. They didn't break the bank w/ Colvin, they are w/ thomas. As a Jet fan I am happy NE has abandoned the winning philosophy that helped them win 3 SBs.

Being a Jets fan I understand you being upset about this signing. Not only do the Patriots get better they have also kept the jets from landing Thomas who was Mangina's biggest target to land. It's good to see you finally owning up to your team nuge.

I don't understand why nuge/stump/grogan is SO enamoured and infatuated with the Patriots, when he's a so-called Jets fan. I'm glad he's keeping it about the most important team in the NFL though, just like he keeps it about the most important team in MLB, the Red Sox.

Again I disagree. At the time his contract was very good that was 3 years ago now. Comparing it to a contract today is a mistake. Teams have more money to throw around due to the cap increase. 3 years ago teams didn't have 30 mil to throw around they had maybe 10 tops.

I hope NE signns more big name, big $ FAs b/c that's not how they have won this decade. They lowball their own Championship players, get rid of some and now are throwing money around at FAs. What do think Asante Samuel is going to want now? Brady was angry last year b/c he gave them a discount and they screwed Branch- how do you think he and other core players will feel?

Since you don't really understand the game or Free Agency I wouldn't expect you to know that but you claim to be a Pats fan and if you truly are you'd know this is NOT how they have won.

Adalius Thomas is a GOOD player, he's not a $20 mil bonus player. He played w/ HOF talent, he won't have that in NE. He'll be expected to be the Pats best defensive player so now he has added pressure and no HOFers tot ake it off him. Remember Ed Hartwell a few years ago? he was the last hot Ravens FA LB and he was a complete bust in Atlana where they just cut him and let's also not forget Thomas will already be 30 by the time the season starts- not exactly a young player.

[QUOTE=Valve]lol, a Jet's fan. The Jet's are like a poor mans Pat's team. They do seem to get some of the cast off's and now they want Dillon too.

The Jets are conducting business the way the Pats USED to when they were winning SBs.

I am HAPPY. 90% of the jet fans i interact w/ at various boards are flipping out worrid about this deal but the facts are NE is straying from their formula of success. They might now be more talented but NE has proven it's not just talent than wins. This will not be a great move for the Pats.

As a Jet fan I did NOT want Thomas, I thought he wasn't worth the money he would get. We have Bryan Thomas who put up similar #s to Adalius Thomas for a fraction of the rpice. I'd rather spend our money elsewhere including re-signin some of our own which we already started to do w/ Jerricho Cotchery.

Do me a favor and find me the successful teams that have gone out and signed high priced FAs?

I don't know why you keep calling me someone else. Step back and read my posts and read the sense they make and stop being a homer.

The most improtant tam in the NFL who has no real fans. They couldn't darw 30K a game before Bill parcells got there, i've been to foxboro and they don't care about football yet they are the most important team. Those Championships are moving further and further into the rear view mirror.

$6 mil 4 years ago is not comparable to $15-20 mil today. Colvin is also STILL YOUNGER than Adalius Thomas. Thomas will be 30 before the season starts, Colvin will be 30 a month later and he's played 4 years for NE. This is not the same as signing Colvin.

I understand most teams have more cap room but that doesn't mean you throw it around for fun, they still have samuel needing a new deal and they'll have others coming up soon of their own PLUS they have 2 1st rd picks and need money for them. This is a break from the successful model the Pats have shown everyone. it may work out but as a division rival fan I am happy to see them go the route of alot of unsuccessful teams.

It helps the team on the field, hurts their options in the free agent market. Don't forget, they have to pay Sammuels as well and most importantly, they need a BIG time WR.........

Thomas is a free agent. Plus there is really no WR out there this year in the FA ranks that would demand big money. The Pats can use one of the two first rounders on a WR..maybe.

Samuel will get between 7-8 millon on the franchise tag, if they can't get a deal done...no biggie.

Also, word on the street is that the Pats are also eyeing Wes Welker from Miami. He's very underrated and has not had a decent QB to play with yet.

Pats eye Welker
Continuing with their aggressive approach in free agency that already landed linebacker Adalius Thomas and tight end Kyle Brady, the Patriots are now expected to court restricted free agent receiver Wes Welker.

Nuge.. who would they get that is a BIG time WR?

It looked to me like they needed a BIG time LB against the colts. They had NO playmakers left on the field. That is what they sorely missed last year. The difference maker.

I am hoping AThomas is just that.

If you could tell me a better way to spend and specific players - lets here it?

I know you dont consider chodes like Donte Stallworth and Drew Bennet BIG Time recievers.

Shit nuge mult.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed three unrestricted free agents today; linebacker Adalius Thomas, tight end Kyle Brady and running back Sammy Morris. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

"Personally and professionally, we are very impressed with Adalius Thomas,” said Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick. “His playmaking, toughness, intelligence, versatility and character were all factors in our decision to pursue him. Adalius has contributed in many ways to some excellent defensive units and we look forward to getting to work with him."

Coach Belichick also offered the following comments on the Patriots’ newest tight end. “Kyle Brady is a tough, smart and dependable player. His familiarity with our system and his consistency make him a good fit for our offense. We are excited to add him to our tight end group.”

Morris joins the Patriots after seven seasons with divisional rivals Buffalo (2000-03) and Miami (2004-06). “Sammy Morris is a good all-around running back,” added Coach Belichick. “From his years in the division, we have first-hand knowledge of all his skills; running, receiving, blocking and several roles on special teams."

Thomas, 29, is a veteran of seven NFL seasons and has played in 96 career games with 73 starts, all with the Baltimore Ravens (2000-06). The 6-foot-2-inch, 270-pound linebacker has recorded more sacks over the last three seasons than any other NFL linebacker, totaling 28.0 sacks from 2004-06. Thomas has totaled 436 career tackles (287 solo), including 38.5 sacks for 242 yards, six interceptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns, 50 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries (including three returned for touchdowns) and 78 special teams tackles. Thomas has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice - as a special teams player following the 2003 season and as a linebacker following the 2006 season. In the Pro Bowl following the 2006 season, Thomas started at outside linebacker for the AFC team (coached by Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick) and returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown in the game.

In 2006, Thomas set career highs with 11.0 sacks and 106 tackles (75 solo) while starting every game on a Baltimore Ravens defense that led the NFL in allowing just 12.6 points per game. Thomas’ 11.0 sacks last season led all Ravens defenders and tied for the fourth highest total among all NFL linebackers. Thomas recorded a sack or shared in a sack in 11 of 16 regular-season games in 2006 and tallied at least one sack seven times in an eight-game span during the season.

Thomas was drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. After playing in three games as a rookie, the Southern Mississippi product played in all 16 games with two starts in 2001 and recorded 39 tackles (27 solo) including 3.5 sacks and tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles. He also tied for the club lead with 18 special teams tackles that season. In 2002, Thomas started 12 of 16 games at defensive end for the Ravens and totaled 68 tackles (38 solo) including three sacks, and also recorded two interceptions, one of which he returned for his first career touchdown. Thomas earned his first career Pro Bowl selection in 2003 as a special teams player, leading the Ravens with a career-high 23 special teams tackles that year. He also started 11 of 13 games at linebacker and tallied 34 tackles (26 solo) including four sacks. Thomas started all 16 games for the first time in 2004 and totaled 80 tackles (48 solo) while finishing second on the team with eight sacks and recording a career-high four forced fumbles. In 2005, Thomas again started every game and set a Ravens franchise record by recording three defensive touchdowns (two fumble returns and one interception return), while leading the team with nine sacks and totaling 104 tackles (70 solo).

Brady, 35, is a veteran of 12 NFL seasons with the New York Jets (1995-98) and Jacksonville Jaguars (1999-2006). The 6-foot-6-inch, 280-pound tight end has played in 183 career games with 169 starts and has caught 334 passes for 3,449 yards (10.3 avg.) and 23 touchdowns. He has played in all 16 games in six of the last seven seasons and has played in all but nine games in his 12-year career. Last season with Jacksonville, Brady started 14 of 16 games at tight end. In eight seasons with the Jaguars, Brady caught 241 passes for 2,500 yards. His career receiving yardage total ranks third on Jacksonville’s all-time list, and his reception total ranks fourth in Jaguars history.

Brady was drafted by the New York Jets in the first round (ninth overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft out of Penn State. As a rookie, Brady started 11 of 15 games for New York and caught 26 passes for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
He started every game in his final three seasons with the Jets (1996-98) and caught a career-high five touchdowns in 1998. He was signed by the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent (transition player) on Feb. 16, 1999, beginning an eight-year run with Jacksonville. In 1999 - his first season with the Jaguars - Brady finished third on the team with 32 receptions for 346 yards and a touchdown. He set career highs in 2000 with 64 catches for 729 yards - both marks setting Jaguars franchise records for a tight end. Brady started every game in 2001 and finished third on the team with 36 receptions for 386 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In 2002, Brady recorded 43 receptions for 461 yards and four touchdowns - the second highest totals of his career in each of those categories. He played in all 16 games for the fourth straight season in 2003 while finishing fifth on the team with 29 catches for 281 yards a touchdown. After starting eight of 11 games in 2004, Brady caught 18 passes in 2005 while playing in every game with 14 starts. Last season, he started 14 of 16 games and caught five passes for 37 yards.

Morris, 29, is a veteran of seven NFL seasons and joins the Patriots after three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The 6-foot, 218-pound running back was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech. In seven seasons, he has rushed for 1,469 yards and scored 14 touchdowns on 374 carries. He also has 112 receptions for 792 yards. He played the first four seasons of his career with the Bills, starting nine of 53 games at running back. He signed with the Dolphins as an unrestricted free agent in 2004. In three seasons with the Dolphins, he started 14 of the 41 games played, rushing for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns on 240 carries. He also had 51 receptions as a Dolphin. Last December, he started four games for the Dolphins and rushed for 255 yards on 63 carries (4.1 avg.), including a 123-yard rushing performance on 25 carries (4.9 avg.) against the New England Patriots. He finished the 2006 season with a career-high season average of 4.3 yard per carry.

Thanks oneldef: that's a sweet highlight package. I find it hard to believe that Adalius can't set the edge in the 3-4, which some AFC North executive said in Borges' column this morning: http://www.boston.com/sports/footba...same/?page=full

wtf is up with that? I find it hard to believe that a guy with McGinnest type skills (maybe better?) can't set the edge. It's interesting that the executive didn't want to be named. Well if he can't play as a 3-4 OLB, fuckit put him down on a hand like McGinnest and play more 4-3: Thomas & Warren at DE, Seymour and Wilfork at DT, (sub in Jarvis Green & Mike Wright up front), Vrabel and Colvin at OLB with Bruschi as the Mike. Signing Seau would give them another weapon at LB.

Now let's get some WR's!!!
