Belichick statement
The Patriots just sent out the following statement from coach Bill Belichick after the team placed the franchise tag on Asante Samuel:
"Asante Samuel is an outstanding player who has been a consistent contributor for us for several years. We hope Asante remains a Patriot for many seasons to come."

Samuel reaction
The agent for Asante Samuel said his client is not upset about the Patriots placing the franchise tag on him.
"We don't look at it as a bad thing," Alonzo Shavers said on Friday night. "This is a step in the process in working toward a long-term deal."
Asked if Samuel would hold out, Shavers said: "That is not our intention at all."

Samuel tagged
The Patriots informed cornerback Asante Samuel today that they are placing the franchise tag on him. Adam Schefter first reported the news on the NFL Network.
The news was confirmed tonight by Samuel's agent, Alonzo Shavers.
We'll have more later tonight.

I'm not gonna lie to you. I'm pretty stoked that we franchised Samuel. Am I right in saying if he does sign elsewhere (NYJ?), it will come with a "Curtis Martin" type of pricetag = aka 2 first round picks???

Celtics won 8 in a row too, didn't they nuge? ... just asking.
No. 6 need: Punter
(Sixth in a series on free agency, the Patriots' needs, and who might be available on the open market)
MARKET ASSESSMENT: Seldom a major market in free agency, as there are only 32 starting jobs in the NFL.
PATS POSITION: With Josh Miller due a roster bonus in March, there is some question as to whether the Patriots will pay it, and that could open a spot on the roster. Miller went on injured reserve with a shoulder injury Nov. 24. He was replaced by Ken Walter for four games, and then Walter went on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Patriots finished up with Todd Sauerbrun.
A look at some of the players who are scheduled for unrestricted free agency:
Todd Sauerbrun (New England) -- Performed admirably in the playoffs for the Patriots, likely earning himself a job somewhere in 2007. The 34-year-old Sauerbrun punted in five games and displayed the type of strong leg that is important in tough Northeast conditions.
Chad Stanley (Houston) -- Finished 21st in the NFL with a 36.7 net average. Entering his eighth NFL season, the 31-year-old Stanley has punted in all 16 games in all but one season.
Matt Turk (St. Louis) -- Punting more than half of the time in a dome, the 38-year-old Turk finished seventh in the NFL with a 38.5 net. Came off a 2005 season in which he didn't punt in one game.
Ken Walter (New England) -- Like Turk, the 34-year-old Walter didn't punt in 2005 before returning to action in 2006. Walter filled in for the Patriots for four games, and added his expertise as a holder.
EXTRA POINTS: The Patriots also have former practice squad punters Danny Baugher and Tom Malone signed for 2007, and both will punt in NFL Europa. Andy Lee (49ers), Derrick Frost (Redskins), Donnie Jones (Dolphins), Kyle Larson (Bengals) and Mat McBriar (Cowboys) are restricted free agents.

Tom Brady's homosexuality coverup? (post #1)
Could it be true what the rumors are saying that Brady had his sperm inserted in this chick to hide his true sexuality? I don't know man, he looks gay to be...
No way in hell Brady can bang her, he chokes too much.................
The New York Post's Liz Smith reports today that actress Bridget Moynahan is expecting, and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is the father, even though his sexuality has been n question for years.
Moynahan, 39, is more than three months along and "healthy and excited" about the impending arrival, said her spokeswoman, Christina Padadopoulos, as she knows she will get half of Brady's income and future earnings.
There doesn't seem to be much hope of reconciliation, as Brady has been seen singing kareoke at the gay drag queen bar, Jacques Cabaret,
http://search.cityguide.aol.com/bos...ret/v-113465342 I heard Tom does a great Dancing Queen.
Here is what some other Boston posters had to say:
Another irresponsible pro athlete...no new news with that. Maybe Tom Brady can phone Tony Dungy and get a lesson or two in how to maintain a professional career in the NFL...with character.
The morals are just out the windows at all level of society. Another kid out of wedlock and everyone is excited. Where are the wedding and they plan on having kids. I guess its, ALL BAMM, JAMM, THANK YOU MAMM
I though he was gay?
Bye bye Gisele, she will dump him because he is worth half now and has a kid on the way, what supermodel wants to deal with that...
Classic man, HAAAAAAAAAAAaaaa, the down fall of Brady. First he chokes and blows the biggest lead in AFC Championship history, then he cheats on his older girlfriend, then hooks up with a used up butterfaced model and now he will lose half his $ and his model girl becuase an old ex is pregnant. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa |

I'd like to see them go hard after Adalius Thomas and Donte Stallworth. Draft-wise I like Meacham and Bowe at WR, Willis, Harris, Woodley, and maybe Posluzny at LB, McCaulley, Ross, Griffin at CB/S. With Samuel franchised, I definitely want to see them go WR & LB with the 2 first round picks. I was surprised MReiss was so high on Beason in the mailbag. He's kind of short for a 3-4 backer, but fast as fuck. |

I was thinking about that too. Although I'd love to see Faulk get more touches, but from a durability standpoint they do need to address a replacement for Dillon. Having 2 stud factor backs in a rotation seems to be the new thing now in the NFL. I really like Lorenzo Booker, but don't know where he's going to fall in the draft. He underachieved at FSU so I'm wondering if he'll slide and be around later on. There's also lots of UFA RB's that they could get on the cheap. |
|
|
| nuge67 |
| Maybe package a pick or two and trade for a solid RB who isn't happy where he is? |

legally, he can say whatever he wants in regards to retiring, when he puts it in writing is when he voids the contract...Maybe he wants more $....

I think he's HOF material. Pretty good resume = http://www.patriots.com/team/index....erbio&bio=28405 . He moved past OJ (aka OJ mask?) for #14 on all time rushing yardage in the Titans game. Here's the juice from MReiss from this AM's paper on his salary cap situation: In releasing Dillon, the Patriots are expected to use a new part of the collective bargaining agreement that allows teams to release players before June 1, but still declare them a June 1 cut for salary cap purposes. In that scenario, the Patriots would save about $2.5 million on their 2007 salary cap. Had Dillon returned under his present contract, he would have counted $4.4 million against the cap. Regardless of whether a player retires or is released, the salary cap charge is the same.
They signed Heath Evans to a 2 year deal yesterday, so it looks like life after Corey goes on.
Great news on All Access:
The season may be over, but Pats show will play year-round
If you care more about what's up with Corey Dillon than Manny's no-show in Fort Myers, the New England Patriots hear you. The team's flagship television show, Patriots All Access, is going year-round, beginning with its first off-season airing at 7 tonight on WCVB-TV Channel 5 . All Access will air weekly for a half-hour during the off-season, instead of the hourlong shows that have run during football season for a decade. The Patriots say the reason for the move is simple: Pats fans, much like Red Sox Nation, want to follow the team all year long . "The season doesn't end when the Super Bowl ends. There's certainly more than enough material," said Matt Smith , executive producer for Kraft Sports Productions , the Patriots' television production arm. Kraft Sports Productions was launched in 2004 to take over producing All Access, several other Patriots-related shows, and broadcasts of the New England Revolution soccer matches. Before that, the Patriots owned the show but used outside producers. All Access also is shown on stations in Providence , Springfield , Maine, and New Hampshire.
nice!!!

PS you guys hear that NFL Network mole saying that the NYJ will be going after Adalius Thomas pretty hard? That would be one guy I wouldn't mind seeing the Pats get into a bidding war for. Very McGinnest-like. Mangini must've saw this action from the Pro Bowl ...
I heard All Access tonight is going to have footage of BB miked up at practice in Hawaii. |

| dignan1973 |
i would love to see them get AThomas.... he is a side to side guy which they REALLY need right now...
any thoughts on getting an Aging guy like Donnie Edwards?
Also, draftwise - love Patrick Willis with one of the 1s... but how about the Penn State LB in round 2 or 3? Pazluski?? I know its polish and he is run plugger. |
|
|
| chowd4692 |
Good call on Willis = great player on a below average team at Ole Miss, but they played a brutal SEC schedule. Orgeron was also lining him up as a rush DE in nickel at the end of last season. Posluszny scares me after watching him tear his knee up in that Orange Bowl vs FSU, but if he's there in 2nd round you have to take him. I think he's going in the 1st round though.
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sc...lposluszny.html
I hope they look at Seau on another one year deal before considering Edwards. Seau's more stout as an 3-4 ILB. Edwards looks a little light in the loafers when it comes to taking on guards and such. |
|
|
| dignan1973 |
And Condon is Edwards agent.. team does not have a great relationship with him...
As far as RB... It will be interesting to see how Maroney responds to the carries this year.... i could see them drafting someone 3 and on.. but.. between him and Faulk i feel good there..
WR.. thats another story.. I think Drew Bennet would be a fit. but the word is SOMEONE is going to overspend on him..
I could see them giving some dough to AdThomas.. he is worth it.. but beyond that I dont know...
as far as Paslusny I have also heard he could be be dropping big time... so.. maybe round 2 or 3... i read one thing on him where they said that if you take his name away he looks like a 3rd round talent... |
|
|
| Syxxpac78 |

Can't seem to find Sunday's on the offense, but it was great to read a columnist finally talking about the decrepid state of the WR position. I like the way this Breer guy thinks though. Hey Lou, can we get him a joint and a hooker?
Hey nuge, I caught out of the corner of my eye before checking in here that you started a thread on our master hoodied pornstar. I gotta check that shit out. O'Brien in focus
Some highlights of Bill O'Brien's coaching career:
O’Brien served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Duke University for the last two seasons.
He has spent the last 14 seasons as an assistant coach at the collegiate level, including four seasons as an offensive coordinator. He has coached in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the last 12 seasons, including tenures at Georgia Tech (1995-2002), Maryland (2003-04) and Duke (2005-06). He spent his first three seasons at Georgia Tech as an offensive graduate assistant (1995-97).
O’Brien is a native New Englander, hailing from Andover, Mass. He attended Brown University in Providence, R.I., where he was a linebacker and defensive end from 1990-92.
O’Brien began his coaching career at Brown, coaching tight ends in 1993 and tutoring inside linebackers in 1994.

Watson's journey
Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson is one of four NFL players who will continue an NFL-USO tradition initiated more than 40 years ago when he embarks this Sunday on visits to U.S. troops at military bases throughout the Persian Gulf.
Watson will be joined by Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler, Chiefs guard Will Shields and Buccaneers linebacker Shelton Quarles to meet and greet troops.
In 1965, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle –- seeking ways to demonstrate the league’s support for America’s fighting forces –- conceived of the idea of sending NFL players to Vietnam on “goodwill tours.” The following year, the NFL teamed with the USO and became the first sports organization to send a group of players to Vietnam and other parts of Asia.

Signings to forget
Free agency begins Friday at 12:01 a.m. EST.
On Monday, we looked at the Patriots' top 10 veteran free agent signings since 2000. Today, we look at the flip side, the veteran signings that didn't work out under coach Bill Belichick and vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli (2000-present):
10) Eric Warfield -- Low risk signing prior to the 2006 season, Warfield entered training camp as one of the most experienced cornerbacks on the roster. Yet he was cut before the season began.
9) Antonio Langham -- Signed in 2000, the hope was that Langham's career would be revived after being reunited with Bill Belichick for his seventh NFL season. The Patriots didn't pay big to sign him to a two-year deal, but Langham struggled in his only season with the team.
8) Joe Panos/Brenden Stai/Rich Tylski -- In three different years, the Patriots signed a veteran guard who retired before the season began. These weren't big-money signings.
7) David Terrell -- Another low risk signing in that the Patriots didn't dish out big money in 2005. But hopes that the former first-round pick would thrive at receiver after being reunited with Tom Brady weren't met, as Terrell was cut before the 2005 season began. Fits into a similar category as receiver Charles Johnson (2001).
6) Steve Martin -- Defensive tackle was signed to help plug the middle prior to the 2002 season, inking a reported one-year, $1 million deal. Started five games early that season, was essentially benched, and then released in December of that season.
5) Chad Brown -- Signed a two-year deal prior to the 2005 season, and received an up-front bonus of $485,000. While thrust into a tough spot as a starting inside linebacker following Ted Johnson's retirement and Tedy Bruschi's health scare, the longtime veteran didn't provide bang for the buck.
4) Fred McCrary -- After signing a two-year deal between a reported $1.5-1.7 million prior to the 2003 season, McCrary ended up playing in only six games (3 starts). Was supposed to take over for Marc Edwards as a powerful lead-blocking back, but he wasn't a fit in the Patriots' way of doing things.
3) Rodney Bailey -- Defensive end was signed away from the Steelers as a restricted free agent (2004) on a one-year, $1.3 million deal. Never emerged, in part due to injuries and in part due to being outplayed by rookie Mike Wright in 2005. The team got little, if any, return for the investment.
2) Monty Beisel -- Linebacker was put into a tough spot, forced into the starting lineup when Ted Johnson surprisingly announced his retirement before 2005 training camp. Beisel struggled, opened 2006 camp playing alongside Tedy Bruschi, but was cut before the 2006 season after regressing in camp. Initially signed a two-year deal with a $425,000 signing bonus.
1) Donald Hayes -- Signed a reported two-year, $4 million deal prior to the 2002 season and was projected to be the team's coveted "big" receiver. Lasted one season and made 12 catches.
EXTRA POINT: Cornerback Duane Starks, who is arguably the Patriots' worst acquisition since 2000, was acquired in a trade. The trade had Starks and a fifth-round pick sent to the Patriots in exchange for third- and fifth-round picks.
ANALYSIS: In recapping the Patriots' free agent activity, one area that stands out is that the team's mistakes weren't crippling from a money perspective. There wasn't one signing to point to in which the team bought especially high, and got low results.

Top signings
With free agency set to begin Friday at 12:01 a.m. EST, it's time to shift gears from the NFL Combine to the veteran shopping season.
With that in mind, here is one look back at the top 10 free agent signings made by the Patriots under coach Bill Belichick and vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli (2000-present):
10) David Patten -- A member of all three Super Bowl championship teams, he played in 54 games, with 44 starts from 2001-2004. Lining up at receiver, he totaled 165 catches and 16 touchdowns over that time.
9) Otis Smith -- After a one-year stint with the team in 1996, he returned in 2000 and played in 56 games (48 starts) over the next three seasons, helping solidify the secondary at cornerback.
8) Bobby Hamilton -- Unsung defensive end was one of the team's initial signings in 2000, and never missed a game in his four years with the club. Was cited by Bill Belichick as a fine tactician at end in the 3-4 defense.
7) Larry Izzo -- Signed in 2001, linebacker has been a fixture on special teams, most recently serving as captain. Has missed just one game since joining the Patriots, and also adds an important presence when it comes to leadership.
6) Joe Andruzzi -- When it comes to value, Andruzzi was one of the team's best. Signed one week into the 2000 season, he ended up starting 72 games in his five years with the team. A hard worker and leader on the offensive line.
5) Roman Phifer -- The classy linebacker played for the team from 2001-2004, starting 46 games and appearing in 59. Was known to come up with the big play at key times, and was a member of all three Super Bowl championship teams.
4) Antowain Smith -- Running back was part of a large veteran free-agent class in 2001 and was part of two Super Bowl championship teams. Totaled 1,157 rushing yards (287 carries) his first season; 982 yards (252 carries) his second season; and finished with 642 yards (182 carries). Wasn't flashy, but his grind-it-out style suited the team.
3) Rosevelt Colvin -- A surprise big-money signing prior to the 2003 season, he has overcome a career-threatening hip injury and hasn't missed a game over the last three campaigns. Isn't the feared pass rusher some projected he might be, but is still a key part of the 3-4 defense.
2) Rodney Harrison -- Had visited Denver and Oakland and figured he'd be staying out West when the Patriots called and asked him to take an overnight flight with his agent, Steve Feldman. Not having the time to pack a bag, Harrison arrived in frigid New England in his shorts, and has been a fixture since. A team leader and tone setter.
1) Mike Vrabel -- After four years with the Steelers, he arrived in New England in 2001 and his career took off. Has contributed in a variety of roles -- from pass-rushing linebacker, to run-stuffing linebacker, to goal-line tight end. Arguably the best athlete on the defense, he's a gritty competitor who has missed just three games while playing hurt when called upon.

The Patriots have offered cornerback Randall Gay a one-year, $1.3 million contract today.
The contract means that if another team attempts to sign Gay -- who is a restricted free agent -- it would have to surrender a second-round draft choice if the Patriots didn't match.
"He's very excited and thought it was an honor," said Albert Elias, who represents Gay. "It shows him they have faith in him."
Elias added that Gay is fully recovered from a hamstring injury that cut his 2006 season short after three games.
Gay entered the league as a rookie free agent in 2004. Had the Patriots offered him the low tender, teams could have signed him to an offer sheet without having to give compensation if the Patriots didn't match.
Today is the deadline for teams to make offers to restricted free agents. Gay joins safety Rashad Baker and offensive linemen Gene Mruczkowski and Billy Yates as restricted free agents |

when healthy he is a servicable starter. any time i see 1 year contracts in the 1-2 range.. who cares... the money needs to be spent in some way...
they could have used a few of those types of guys last year when they finished well under the cap... and ended up with guyys like Alexander on the field as the Colts stormed back. |

Yeah your right its only a bit over the verteran minimum and doesn't hurt if they dump him off. |

| Don't forget guys, they have a minimum amount they have to spend as well. They can afford to throw some money at some backup guys with all the cap space they have. |

| We lost Graham to the Broncos. Hopefully Watson stays healthy next year and Thomas improves. |

I'm not too worried about Graham leaving. I think Thomas is going to be a great TE. And $10 million in gauranteed money? wtf is that?
Plus they have Garrett Mills as a backup. |

It's official now:
Patriots release RB Dillon
March 2, 2007
FOXBORO, MASSACHUSETTS (TICKER) -- The emergence of Laurence Maroney made Corey Dillon expendable.
The New England Patriots on Friday released Dillon, who shared time in the backfield with Maroney last season and rushed for 812 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns.
The move will save the Patriots $2 million under the salary cap.
Dillon, 32, spent three seasons with New England and set the franchise's single-season record with 1,635 rushing yards in 2004, when the Pats won their second straight Super Bowl and third in four seasons.
"On behalf of the Patriots organization, we respect and appreciate Corey Dillon's significant contributions to our team," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "Those contributions extend beyond his individual on-field achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team."
One of those relationships was with Maroney, who now has the role of feature back. A 2006 first-round pick, Maroney rushed for 745 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
Dillon spent his first seven seasons with Cincinnati before being traded to New England in 2004 and ranks 14th all-time with 11,241 rushing yards. He also has 244 catches for 1,913 yards.
The Patriots on Friday also re-signed fullback Heath Evans and guard Billy Yates.
Evans, 28, rushed for 117 yards on 27 carries and caught seven passes for 34 yards last season, his second with the Patriots.
Yates, 26, started three games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. |

Another article about signing Thomas.
With any luck this is true. Fucking badass!
This will be kickass. Thomas plays what? 6 different defensive positions?
Imagine him and Vrabel swapping spots mid drive just to fuck with the opposing offense. |

| It looks to me like a done deal. Great signing by the Patriots it will help out are defensive alot. Everybody talks about Ray Lewis, but the last two years the best lb the Ravens had was Thomas. I can't wait to see him and Colvin play together two of the best pass rushing lb's in the nfl. |

|
| KingOfAllMedia |
wow, with Bruschi, Colvin, Vrabel, and Thomas, that's a fucking scary bunch of linebackers. :scardie:
I, for one, will be happy to see Maroney given the RB job full time next year. Time for him to break out and become the player we all know he has the potential of becoming. |
|

| What up King!!! I read in Reiss' blog that AThomas made his 1st pro bowl as the AFC special teams selection. How "Patriot Way" is that. He'll be a McGinnest type of skill set, maybe more skills in coverage. Not 6'5" like Willie, but down the road may be a better player over his career. This is a huge sign. |

Hey Dig!!! - I would get them in here with just a one year deal. I wonder what's up with Horn's injury that kept him out of playoffs? I'm so psyched the pool of WR's is so much better with the salary cap cuts that were made. Other than Stallworth, Bennett and Curtis did not excite me. What do you guys think? I like Moulds and Stallworth the best. |
|

I wonder if they'll sign Seau as a backup if they can get him for not too much money. Might not be a bad idea.
As for a WR, pick up either Moulds or Stallworth and spend a first round pick on another one.
But it remains to be seen if Jackson will be ready in time for camp and preseason. And if Brown is going to retire. So that will of course change things up a bit. |

Seau would be real nice, Valve. Then they can use 3 OLB's like they did in 2004 with McGinnest, Colvin, and Vrabel in a rotation = they be less worn out at end of games.
Hey let's get some kegs and hot chicks and celebrate a little ...

Exactly. Seau can still move, and he won't be as prone to injury if he's a backup. I'd bet he play for $1 million. He wants a damn ring just like Thomas. And the Pat's certianly have the cap room, even with Thomas's payday. |

Is the thomas signing actually 100% official??? If its not I won't get excited yet. 2 words. Lecharles Bently. Had a VERBAL deal with the eagles I believe and then turned and signed with the browns.... hows that working out. |

| Thomas is coming to the Pats!!!!!!! He wants to play for the best defensive mind in the NFL, and have a shot at a championship. Thomas will be able to do both with the Patriots. |

| Thomas is an excellent player but NE has won alot w/o overpaying for FAs and that won't be the case here. I think this improves the talent on NE but I think it would be a bad move based on the way they have won in the past. As long as Brady is healthy they'll always be a big time team but I don't think it will sit well in the LR that they are now signing high priced FA's. |

You are a fucking idiot! The Patriots have landed the best defensive player(at a position where they are desperate for new talent) and they still have plenty of money to spend elsewhere. Great signing by the Patriots. SuperBowl Favs. once again!!! I love it!!! |

I disagree with you. Case in point Rosevelt colvin. He got a nice sized contract with the pats to leave the bears. Nobody complained. |

He's not the best defensive player, he was a good player surrounded by incredible talent.

he got $6 mil in guaranteed money- that's very different from $20 mil. They didn't break the bank w/ Colvin, they are w/ thomas. As a Jet fan I am happy NE has abandoned the winning philosophy that helped them win 3 SBs. |
