Tonight on Larry King Live, First Lady Laura Bush said she understands “how the American people feel” when they express frustration over Iraq, but insisted that “to leave now would be a serious mistake.” She said of Iraqis, “This is their opportunity to seize the moment, to build a really good and stable country.”
As AmericaBlog first noted, Bush added, “[M]any parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody.” Watch it:

According to the latest Brookings Institution Iraq Index, as of November 2006, there were approximately 185 insurgent and militia attacks every day.

Ass Boil, I think we're generally in agreement but referring to our First Lady as a super idiot is, uh, probably not helping to make your point. (Makes you look like a certain banned member.)
I used to wonder if the First Lady was critical of some of the White House policies.
I think what we're seeing is an extension of how she functions within their marriage.
To minimized conflict, both with her husband and her own family issues, she glosses over what it is otherwise problematic while aligning herself with him.
She strives to paint a rosy picture.
Since GW is a very insecure person with a substantial feelings of inferiority, I think he tends to over-compensate with temper tantrums and forms of "religious certitude", which she probably rarely challenges. Not quite a Stepford wife but probably someone who is terrified by her own REAL angry reactions if she ever let her self go.
A crude simplification of course but my point is that it has nothing to do with intelligence and more to do with what troubles most of us in some form or another.
I'm personally surprised that GW got someone as nice as her.
I wonder if she allows herself to feel any regret about marrying him? |

this is just a guess on my part - after she was involved in that car accident that killed her friend I assume she felt so guilty (survivors guilt more than anything) that she is trying to "make up for it" by marrying a person like bush who so obviously needs "saving".
