Venus (magnitude –3.9, in Pisces) is the brilliant white "Evening Star" shining in the western twilight. In a telescope it's still small and gibbous

Jupiter (magnitude –2.1, in southern Ophiuchus) dominates the south in early dawn. Look for Antares and the stars of Scorpius to its right and below — and, using binoculars, look too for the fading Nova Scorpii 2007 #1.

Saturn (magnitude 0.0, in Leo) shines invitingly high the southeast at dusk. It's at its highest in the south after about 10 p.m. Regulus, less bright, shines 10° to its lower left.

Good thing i checked, the launch has been pulled back a day to Tursday night!
I'll take pics.

The Atlas 5 rocket's first flight for the U.S. Air Force, set for blastoff Thursday night from Florida, will be an unusually complex ascent to deploy a flock of military research satellites.

Liftoff is scheduled for 9:37 p.m. EST (0237 GMT) from Cape Canaveral's Complex 41. The available launch window extends to 11:42 p.m. EST (0442 GMT), a duration of two hours and five minutes.

The weather forecast calls for scattered low- and high-level clouds, good visibility, temperatures in the mid-60s F, northeasterly winds 12 gusting to 18 knots and the chance of isolated showers. Meteorologists say there is a 20 percent chance that cloud cover or showers could violate the launch rules

...the irony is that if some underfunded researcher happens to stumble upon something that could improve life on this fly spec., and could also, as a side issue, be used to blow shit up, their all over the side issue, but it may take decades to finish the original intent of the work.

David Suzuki is an icon in Canada, known for his love of science and environment - and held with as high regard as a politician (probably more so, deservedly). Rick Mercer is a very funny stereotypical Canadian, who has a knack for bringing out the sense of humour in people like Suzuki.

The launch was perfect!
It looked 100% better in my binoculars, than it does on the video. The exhaust was BIG and orange, and it doesn't come through in the video, partly from darkness, and partly from the camera part not magnifying to the binocular itself.
It runs about 1 minute or more. Stay with it, the rocket disappears for a second at the start of the film, behind a cloud, then it brightens to a clear sky and keeps going! But i hope you enjoy it.

Yeah?

We have Gopher Turtles here in central Florida. Thats about all though. If you go near the rivers and springs there are some others that aren't as big and have alot of red & yellow on their shells. I once stopped and helped a big freaking turtle (Much bigger than a gopher turtle... wasn't a snapping turtle though) across the road. It clawed at me and broke skin but didn't make me bleed... then it got to the other side and hauled ass when I set it down.

Ungrateful fuck. Should've let it get run over.

Those are Tortoises, and they are protected and endangered. A big Wallmart was put up down there somewhere in the last few years that dug up their burrows in the process.

Indigo snakes also live down their holes, also endangered and protected there.

I have to apologize for the video, guys. I know why it got screwed up. The blue line is a lamp post across the way, it's blue-tinted. I should have walked past it, and avoided the washout. Stupid me.
Also, for some reason, my binoculars are 8x, but the camera is a 1:1 ratio! Makes no sense. But it really was great in my eyepieces. I'll have better shots when i get my good optical equipment out of storage very soon!

www.spaceweather.com has an article on the launch.

ROCKET LAUNCH: Living in Florida has its advantages: nice weather, pretty beaches, and you get to see lots of rockets. Last night, Ronald Netzley photographed this Atlas V-401 soaring over his back yard in Palm Bay, not far from Cape Canaveral:

The rocket delivered six military satellites to Earth orbit. Two of them are of interest to NASA: robo-sats ASTRO and NextSat will circle Earth in tandem, docking, undocking, exchanging components and performing simulated repair procedures--all without human intervention. The goal of the mission, known as "Orbital Express," is to test automated docking and rendevous technologies key to future exploration of the Moon and Mars: full story.

In my best Cliff Claven voice....

Do you know why so many turtles are called cooters, and especially in the South?

The africans called their tortoises "Kutah", and when they were brought over for slaves, they would call the turtles the same thing. The white man started calling them the same thing.... "Cooter"

That is both a science and a fun hobby... that I miss. It's been almost a year since I've done it last.

One of my favorite things to do, was to bonsai some of my plants. More than just topping them when young, but pruning, removing excess growth, and tieing and guiding the parts of the plant you want to keep for the best light absorption, with maximum yeild and potency as the final goal.

Curing them to connoisseur quality is also a bit of a science. I'd only keep the best and biggest buds for smoking, and the rest I'd turn into kif, pressed hash and oil. Those things are also a science and a hobby that I really enjoy.

I also did a bit of breeding for a while, crossing some great strains and picking the best candidates to cross back to other generations.

The plant is an amazing little science lab all by itself. I've done other gardening, but nothing else I've ever cultivated had the range of adaptability that weed has. You can grow giant trees 20ft high, (that used to be a common way in Hawaii), I've trained it to trellis, the now very common 'Field of Green' methods make it look like a grass crop. I've harvested ripe bud and left the plant getting continuous harvest for up to four months.

You phuck around with a tomato plant like that, it just dies... borrring.

Yes indeed thirty three cheers for the science and hobby of cultivating premo-bud.

I had some stiff 2x2 square wire, that I used as a mini trelli and used to fashion some Indica plants to grow behind it like they were climbing like a vine. When I'd put them under 12 hours, they would stretch enough and start migrating towards the light. I'd put those plants around the perimiter of the smaller plants that were directly under the light, keeping their buds where the light was the best.

Those perimeter plants would have up to 20 "cola type buds" each, and I often ended up with 2 ounces of 'popcorn fart dry' buds off of each of those trained plants.

I think this year, I'm going to try some remote outdoor grows. Lots of good islands along a large river where I live, where nobody goes.

The first time I planted seed, was in my back yard, in a greenhouse I had built. 13 plants, all grew nice, all ended up female!

I have a 7' privacy fence around my backyard (kept the danes in). The plants grew and grew, and this was before I realized I could tie them down or top them.

Anyways, I had been bitching to the wife that we needed to do something, because they were getting harder to hide by the day. One day I got home from work, and could see them poking over the fence from the road, and really felt I should do something abot them.

2 days later, I got home from work, to meet my wife at the door. She said we did need to move the plants, and showed me what she found in our driveway. It was a binder insert, and on it, it said "surveilance reports". The local cops must have been coming into my driveway to look over my fence the bastards.

Transplanted them ot a remote location, but they did not live. 13, 7 foot and really healthy and bushy plants would have provided us with smoke for years... I really liked those plants, it was a real shame to have to move them and watch them die from the shock of it all.

The real funny thing about those plants in our greenhouse....

That was in 2000, we went to Toronto for the tattoo expo, and her parents looked after our flowerbeds and garden. They also watered those plants.

Her mother said to her dad, while watering them " these are really nice plants, we should ask to get some from them"

her dad said "you want to grow pot????"

I only heard that story 2 years after we had them at christmas, it was pretty funny. Guess you would have to be there.

You'd have to ask how he knew.

My friend loves to grow plants, and buy bongs. And he's never smoked in his life!

There is an excellent variety for outdoor growing in shorter seasons and cooler climates developed by the boyz of Texada Island. Mark Emerit use to sell that seed. Not sure of the best way for you to get it all the way out in Saskabush, and I've forgotten the market name, but a little research should turn it up. The Texada product isn't world class power weed, but it is respectable and the yield is good.

wow. lots of gardeners here.

i grew pot one summer. i had a nice crop. pretty industrious for someone who doesn't smoke.

i'm going to plant some heirloom tomato seeds. i got some great Black Cherokee tomatoes at the local green market last week. i went back yesterday and bought another one to sacrifice for the seeds.

i found some dude online who instructs you on how to grow tomatoes by removing almost all the leaves from the plant, allowing it to focus its resources on the fruit rather than the "excess" foliage. we'll see...

You've all heard me talk about "dark skies." What that means is, there's no nearby artificial light pollution around, giving you more night sky to see, since the artificial light doesn't haze the atmosphere out in those areas.
If you live in, or near, a major city, chances are you can only see the brightest stars in the sky. here's a satellite photo of North America. You can see the bright lights in this light sensitive photo.

PIR...What type of climate/habitat do you need to raise turtles? The reason I ask is that I have a 1,200 gallons teardrop -shaped 'cement' pond. (Yeah, Elley Mae, a cement pond.) My fiancee and I spent all weekend cleaning out 50 years of muck, cleaning the surface, filling the bottom with river pebbles, filling it and conditioning the water. Right now there are ~30 goldfish, 2 frogs and a tadpole that call it home. I thought a turtle would be an interesting addition if the habitat was compatible. We plan to install a skimmer/pump/filter and a falling water feature. :dontknow:

Ok, the pond is a great start. First, make sure the treatment isn't dangerous to the fish or animals. The filter is a great idea. Most important- if the pond gets sunlight, it's perfect. Turtles need lots of UV light to live.
Next, make room to let them go on land. They need to lay in the sun certain times of the day.
Next- depending on the size turtles, they might eat the fish. be careful of in-pond fighting. Next, make a border where the frogs and turtle can't get away when you're not around. Give them lotsa room.
Most important- Bees, and other animals can be deadly to turtles. if you can somehow have it all screened in, you're fine. If not, it's real risky!
They love waterfalls also!

I hope i covered a lot..let me know! more questions?

SAFETY ANALYSIS NEEDED TO CLEAR SHUTTLE'S TANK REPAIRS
------------------------------------------------------
Amid ongoing inspections of the shuttle Atlantis' hail-damaged external
fuel tank, engineers are optimistic they can make unprecedented repairs at
the Kennedy Space Center, avoiding a lengthy launch delay to late June.
Until the assessment is complete, NASA officially continues to hold out
some hope for a launch attempt in late April, after a Russian mission to
the international space station. But engineers say a flight in early to
mid May appears much more likely.

iits hard to get good pond advice these days. i started my first pond three years ago, liquid cap of 1488 gal waterfall and all that good shit. took me four months to build it and had to reline it three times before i gave up and lined it with sandstone and mortar.
the first year everyone said to leave it alone all winter and the fish would be ok. i didnt believe them and brought them inside. good thing cause it froze 18 inches thick. the next winter i left them out, and chopped ice with an axe everyday. i lost two 14 inch koi and a 12 inch butterfly goldfish thart winter. there were 84 fishin the fall and 24 in the spring. this year they went in a heated stock tank in my shed. and all survived. just refilled the pond and moved the fish last weekend. now i have two frogs, countless toads, several crawfish, one waterdog, one crappie, and an assload of goldfish which will be spawning in the next month or two. cant wait!
