I'm sure I'll get plenty of  posts. Save 'em.

I see we have a lot of Darksiders who have multiple hobbies, and interest in the Sciences. I figured I'd conglomerate the two subjects.

Feel free to post your hobbies and interests. Pics help also. Any subjects are welcome, and discussed.

We can discuss Science subjects here also. (Past, Current, Future).

Should be fun!

On a science note, New Horizons, which is a Pluto-bound probe launched last January (I saw the launch), just past Jupiter for a gravity assist. The on-board cameras were tested, and passed with flying colors.

This coming Friday night, another rocket launch will happen. I'll post some pics if it goes off.

Nice sunburst Les Paul, what year is that?

I have an accoustic, and a darkmatch stratocaster, but my pride and joy is this guitar, that I saved up for years to buy in my teens.

It is a 25 year anniversary re-issue of the 1967 Gibson S.G. Only 100 of them made for 1992, 25 in 4 different colors. I ordered (and paid for) mine in early 1991, and got one of the last "Heritage Cherry Red" available.

I was 14 in that picture, and dressed up for hippy day at school.

I'll throw a science question out there, since we'd all be involved in this:

The last 10 years or so, Astronomers have recorded Near-Earth Asteroids passing WAAAY too close to Earth. If one should be in our path of impact, what do you think is the best way to avoid that happening?

I can't say "blow it up" because now you have 150 asteroids hitting us. I think the best thing is, design a probe we can launch, attach itself to the asteroid, and gently 'push' it out of it's current path with jets. It may cost a lot, but it would be well worth it!

Ideas?

Strap a rocket on it with just enough boost to change the asteroid's trajectory and slam it into the Middle East while secretly getting our troops the fuck outta there!

Good Miss America question! :D

What about some kind of atomic bomb or something, that would blow it up to dust, or atleast very small peices that would burn up in our atmosphere before they hit the earth?

Or maybe we could see it coming, and time it so we were on the other side of the earth when it hit the earth , and get under desks and doorways :p

I think we should just quit trying to control things, and if one is going to hit us, let it hit us. Another ice age would combat global warming as well.

Not a bad idea, and it would make a HELL of a meteor shower! But you can't predict that the bomb would blow every bit of it to dust. Don't forget, the outer parts would blow away from the explosion, and probably would stay largely intact.

Speaking of meteor showers, I wish I had my scanner out of storage. I'd post some of my meteor shower pics over the years.

I've got a large collection of fossils and other cool hands-on type of things that I used to display at the zoo, or take along to educational displays and presentations. Anyways, I bought a collection of "meteor" pieces, and was amazed to find out how different they all were.

One peice I have, is unbeleivably heavy for it's size compared to anything else i've ever seen.

it's probably an iron meteorite. They are SO dense. Even when they're small, they weigh a lot. You can test them with a magnet, if it attracts, it'll have iron in it.

What if we were to get a bunch of misfit geologists and oil drillers and detonation specialists, got them all drunk, throw a love interest in there, then stick them all on a rocket to land on the asteroid. We could then drill to the asteroid's center, plant some explosives, throw in a little more drama for your mama and take care of it that way...:bigthink:

I have a Marshal "valve state". I'm not sure if they are still sold, but they were known for their "tube like" sound, and also being able to sound very clear, or very distorted, with different gain settings.

The other thing I really enjoy is genetics. I learned basic genetics at age 12 when I started breeding snakes. There are different color and pattern mutations that can be bred for, and knowing how genetics works has made quite a few of my friends very rich. (One friend, who sells hundreds of baby snakes each year, had 9 of them hatch that are worth 40,000 each, last year)

But when my wife bought horses, I realized that my knowledge of snake genetics could carry over to horses. Most horse people think that god picks the color of the babies....

Last year we had a baby horse, that showed 1 dilution color, 2 paint patterns, and had blue eyes.

There are going to be a lot of really cool looking baby horses born this year, thanks to my understanding of genetics - makes me a bit sad not to be involved with horses any more...

In school I thought history was very boring. But I've really gained an interest in it, especially local history. The area I live in is rich with historical events and stories, so many of them leave us when the old timers die.

I've taped a few conversations with a few of the old timers around here, and wish I'd have been doing that for a long time.

The other thing I thought I would never be into is architecture. I've been gaining an appreciation for some of it lately actually.

One thing I will never lose an interest in is Cryptozoology. Chupacabra, Bigfoot, Ogopogo, 'and, uh, things of that nature'

Just yesterday, I was on Chip's myspace site, and saw he is going to start doing an internet radio show about cryptids and things (remember that ghost hunter site....)

I started reading on the recent developements and findings of the "chupacabra" Seems to be something to it. Some weird looking animals that DNA has not been able to pin point, have been trapped and killed in Mexico and the Southern U.S.

Wow, PIR. Great thread.

I'm a big Anatomical & Physiological nerd, myself. (I majored in Biology, minored in Immunology.)

I am a Massage Therapist, and I specialize in Deep Tissue and Neuromuscular Therapy. To save my hands, I gained certifications in CranioSacral Therapy and Manual Lymphatic Drainage, both soft tissue modalities. Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT) is used in post-mastectomy and post-lymph nodectomy patients whose arms are now no longer able to drain lymph, thus filling with fluid (Lymphedema). LDT reroutes the lymph flow to other nodes for processing. If left untreated, the arm will eventually look like what you would think of as being Elephantitis, although the correct word is Elephantiasis.

I have 2 more certifications to obtain in LDT before I can treat Stage 4 Lymphedema. I have recently had a baby, and so my professional career is kind of on hold. I only treat private clients now at night or on weekends, so Stew can be home with the baby.

As for evolution, I definitely believe in our race evolving and improving over centuries, to "keep up" with our environment. But going back to the start of Earth and our galaxy, universe, etc...I don't believe the Big Bang theory. I just don't, and i'm not sure why. I can't see a pinhead of "material" exploding, and forming galaxies, stars and planets.
I believe more, that it formed much the way it forms today..gas, dust, gravitational attractions, collapsing material, and forming. Where did it come from? I've never formed an opinion on that.

Thanks, AZ. There are people who made MILLIONS finding meteorites, gems, etc..and selling them. Robert Haag is an example. He scours the planet finding, buying meteorites, and sells them. The man is a millionaire!

I am not a Christian, but have a lot of christian friends, many of which are big on science (including a science teacher). I've had some interesting conversations about evolution vs. the bible with them.

My travelling educational shows took me many places, including heavily religious groups. Many times I would have to leave my fossils at home, and not touch on evolution.

They beleive the earth is 5000 years old, and that fossils were put here by the devil and others who are trying to abolish Christianity.

Anyone ever read any books by Daniel Quinn? Really interesting way of looking at what we have done to this earth and why. Population explosion, the agricultural revolution, leaving our tribal ways, and organized religion. Makes a hell of a lot of sense.

I grew up Christian, but I never went with the "God created everything" concept. There is a pure science to it all. naturally, religeons always have their views of everything, and that's fine. But I never followed that road.

Just a side note, the lunar eclipse is on NOW! it's cloudy where I am.

Also, you can see the International Space Station! Go to www.heavens-above.com and plug in your hometown. Times and coordinates are posted on the site for the ISS, satellites, planets, just about anything up there!

Another thought I've had lately. Now that Jesus and Mary's body's have been found, as well as their offsprings body, that throws a wrench into what Christians beleive.Like Howard says, they are now basically Jewish.

If you think of it though, Christianity is basically a religion that worships Jesus and Mary, Jesus being a profit, and a Jew, spreading the word of God, and worshiping God...

That would be kind of like If I started worshipping the second coming of Jesus, David Koresh.

Instead of Christianity, it would be called Koreshtianity, and my churches would have his pictures all over the place.

Time to head out, not trying to bash Christianity for all you Christians, but an interesting thought anyways.

many people have called themselves gods over time. I don't know enough about the jesus and mary bodies to comment. I haven't read about it. But your view makes sense. I guess we;'ll have to wait to see the investigation.

I can't say that I have any science-related hobbies. Almost all my hobbies involve using my hands (bowling, billiards, cross-stitching, various computer interests -- web design, graphics design, programming). I also enjoy American history (thanks to my wife and a fantastic history professor in college). Though I may not share in the various science interests, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading what each of you have posted.

My son is a science nut. He collects dinosaurs, fossils, geodes, crystals and such. His Geode collection must weigh 10k lbs and he refuses to break any open because he's certain the crystals are still growing inside. And if he waits long enough, he'll hit the motherload of crystal packed geode.

As for me, I collect animal skulls and bones. And dont give me any shit, or ill start a human collection as well. :p

Thanks, man. All hobbies can be discussed here, not only science. Cross-stitching..is that lanyard? or hook-rugging?

Oooh Oooh oooh, so do I, and I've got a really cool story about that.

I must have 200 skulls, a lot of deer and bull skulls, and then 1 of damn near every animal you can think of (that is native to here)

About 5 years ago, I found some old buffalo skulls near a river bank and sand bar in the spring, lots of teeth, and some elk antlers and even some wooly mammoth tusk, from the ice age. We'd check each year after the thaw in some good spots.

Then, we found what looked like a horse skull. Figured it must be a moose or something, cause horses weren't brought over here until the 1500's by the spanish or whatever. So, it went in my "flower bed" in front of my house with many other old cool skulls.

During one of the Mothers day rattlesnake counts that I host here, we had 2 visitors from Australia attend and do slideshows in the evening for us. One was a herpetologist, the other was a paleantologist. He saw the skull in the flower bed and asked me where I found it and why I was keeping it outside.

So I told him. He told me to not let stay outside, it was a very old horse skull. Horses used to be native here, but were wiped out with the wooly mammoths during the ice age, very few good skulls have ever been found from them. He showed me why it was not a moose skull, horses have 2 cavities in their skull like this old one did.

Mine has the nasal bones intact!!! From looking into it, it seems to be the most complete prehistoric horse skull in existance, and one of very few intact skulls ever found.

I think it would be illegal for me to sell it, and if I notify the Saskatchewan Museum about it, they will take it away from me. So right now, it is an interesting discussion peice until I decide what to do with it.

I'm kind of hoping I can find rich collector of rare fossils and things to pay me big money for it.

If I can find the pictures I took of it I will post them, If I can't I'll make a point of taking some more pictures of it.

Wow, Wooly Mammoth tusks?? Are they common to find up there? I'd think that would be a major find!
And you really think a museum would take the horse skull away? if you own it, how would they claim it? They might pay you to let them display it.

Were we seperated at birth?

I don't have quite as many as you, but i have quite a few. I have skulls from coyote, skunk, javalina. I have 2 whale vertebrae, dolphin ribs and skull, horse & cow bones, and a jaw of something I have no idea what it is.

I actually have a 'bone garden' in front of my house where i display some. It also serves purpose to keep weirdos and jahova witnesses away. As soon as I can I'll upload pics!

The Mammoth tusk I found is just a sliver of a tusk about the size of a finger. The local Veteranarian has a chunk about the size of an arm. That is a really rare find.

The laws in Saskatchewan are a bit tough on amateur archaeologist / paleontologist.

In Alberta, you are allowed to keep what you find, but you have to keep it in Alberta. Here, you have to report everything you find, and if they want to take it, it is theres.

I had a "surface collection" permit for a time. They were going to come out to see all of the stuff I had found, but never did, and never made me bring it to them... so technically, I guess I couldn't get in a lot of trouble the way things sit now.

Shortly after opening the zoo, a good friend of mine's father called me to come out to the farm, said he had something to donate to the museum portioin of the zoo.

Navajo rugs, jewlery, some teeth and some bones from an Indian Chief that he and his father excavated 50 years ago!!! That is a big no-no up here, even arrow heads can not be collected if found... legally.

To top it off, he said they had the skull at one time, but sent it to the museum to be dated, and the museum never sent it back to them like they said they would.

Needless to say, I thanked him for the offer, but did not take the stuff. He passed away a year ago, and if none of his family wants the stuff I might take it just for the memory, because he had wanted me to have it.

I don't have as many "exotic" type of animals. A friend of mine is a taxidermist, and does taxidermy for a lot of the zoo's up here in Canada. He has every skull you can imagine, lions, tigers, lots of very cool stuff. He did a skeletonization of a 14' python for me, over 1000 bones to glue together.

My "flower garden" is a few tulips, cool rocks, fossils and bones in the front of my house. Not only do the JW's stay away, but I don't even get any kids at Halloween!!!

Could have been cause soon after I bought my house, I really did it up for Hallowwen. I had a lot of freaky looking torches lit, skulls hanging on my house and put on stakes, had some red xmas lights in some of the skulls.... even I was a bit bugged out to walk past it and come in the house.

It is a beef with the professionals, that many amateur home people fuck up the finds for the scientists.

So, in a perfect world, if someone found something, they would phone the government, and they would send out trained people to collect everything properly.

I can see their point - its just that they don't have the resources to send people out for everything, its just a nice law for them to use if they ever feel like it I guess.

My motto has always been, it is easier to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission.

I understand that, but the gov't should fund the scientists to allow them to go and search for these things! Science is 'search and discovery.' If scientists sit back, and let everyone else discover things, are they doing their job completely?

Speaking about Halloween, reminded me of another thing I used to like to do, that I haven't done in a few years.

Growing Giant Pumkins.

The first year I tried, I grew a few big ones, the largest being about 130 lbs. I moved it into the back yard, weighed it, and came in for a beer before I went back out to carve it.

To my horror, I heard "oh Ryan, come look at this"

Sarge, my big black and white male great dane, was fucking the pumkin, and pushing it all around the back yard. He wrecked it!!! I nearly cried.

The year after that, I did a lot of research and spent money on good pumkin seeds to really grow a giant. I started it under some grow lights in the house :p , then b
