ESPN the last time I checked broadcasts every other Goddamn event in English... what is this bullshit... they broadcast the Telcel-Motorola 200 Busch race in Spanish because it's in Mexico... fuck that... this is still America... we still speak fucking English here... broadcast that shit in Spanish in fucking Mexico... I guess they feel the need to have the fucking race in Mexico because that's where all the "American Made" vehicles are built... long live Toyota... and Fuck Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Mexico, ESPN, and NASCAR for letting ESPN get away with that bullshit...

With the ever increasing amount of people from mexico, moving to the U.S, I think that is a great idea. Actually, I hope more of the radio and the t.v in the U.S is catered to the spanish speaking.
Perhaps it is time for you to learn to speak the language. |

This is a highly debated topic, that has extremely strong emotions on both sides. I tend to agree with the original poster, being in an area that has a large spanish(abeit illegal) population. A good 40 % of the billboards in my area are in spanish, and more than 1/2 of the mexican population in my area cannot communicate in basic english. IMO, when my grandparents came to America they had to learn the language and customs of their new home whereas it seems that today, many of the newly arrived mexican population expect that their new home adapt to their needs.

It's absolute bullshit... if you have a house guest that you constantly have to bend over backwards to suit their every need and they contribute nothing to you during their entire stay how long are you going to tolerate them being a disrespectful asshole before you ask them to leave...

We have the french speaking Quebecer's up here. Everything we have at the stores, must have french lables on it, anywhere in Canada, where hardly anyone speaks French.
If the manufacturer doesn't comply, it isn't sold up here.
In Quebec, all business signs, road signs and labling has to have the French first, and in larger lettering than the english. Those who dont comply, get charged.
We have to learn french in highschool, and pretty much need passing grades to attend secondary school for a lot of professions.
As for the Aboriginal's up here, we are now going way out of our way to make it up to them how bad we fucked them over. We are giving land back to them based on their population, which is much larger now than it was back then. They don't pay any taxes, so the rest of society has to pay more taxes.
It is not their fault really, but in many cities there is a large proportion of aboriginal's who don't work, collect welfare and other benefits, start having kids early, and have lots of kids, and are responsible for a lot of the crime in the cities. I actually think the 2 situations have a lot in common, so I can feel for your situation. |

Honestly, I didn't have a problem with anyone from another country coming to the U.S. to make a better life for themselves until some asshole decided it would be good to have the Star Spangled Banner sung in spanish. Whenever I make my trip north later this year, I need to make sure I speak Canadian well enough so that I don't get a dog's hind leg whenever I order a cheeseburger.
Seriously though, my brother-in-law's wife was born in Mexico but has lived in the states for over half her life. She was legal up until a few years ago when she inadvertantly let her documents expire before she could renew them. Her english is perfect, albeit with a slight hispanic accent. She is a terrific lady, and my brother-in-law is one lucky man to have her as his wife. She is trying to become a naturalized citizen (she has two children that were born in the states), but she refuses to live off the government or work because of her status. She's a fantastic mother to her children. Even my daughter looks up to her. So at least there are exceptions to the stereotype (and I know you will acknowledge that as well). Just thought I'd share that. |

Is it possible that there is only the one ESPN in Mexico and that is why they are broadcasting in Spanish on ESPN? If this is the case, I understand why they are doing it, but I feel it is a slap in the face to a lot of people. |

That's the main reason I was pissed in the first place... ESPN = High Definition / ESPN2 = No High Definition...
I pay extra for HD... I want to watch what I'm paying more for in the language I speak and the language that will be on that channel once this race is over... it will be in English for the Busch race next weekend... and the week after that... there is no reason for it not to be this week... they have a whole block of Spanish channels... let the people that don't want to conform pay extra...

I'm with ya there. I even have a problem with Americans who live off welfare and food stamps because they don't wanna get off their dead asses and get a job. I had a guy that worked for me at my previous job that, when he first hired in before I became the department lead, spoke ZERO english (later found out he was illegal and went back to Mexico voluntarily). However, he worked his ass off and learned to speak english better than a lot of people who were born and raised here. Not long after that, he was writing it extremely well. He was one of the BEST people I've ever had work for me and worked with. He eventually was given an equal managerial position as me in another facility because he earned it and was very well-respected. He did send his mother money every month and kept just enough to live off while he stayed in the states. He went back south of the border in the summer of '01 because he missed his mother. Prior to him going back, he was actually trying to get things done legally, but he genuinely worked to better himself and didn't believe that the country had to cater to him because he spoke no english when he first arrived in the states. |

Which is all you can ask of someone... if/when I'm ever afforded the opportunity to move to Switzerland you better believe I'll drop English like a bad habit... I don't care what country it is... if I move to Mexico I should have to learn Spanish... if I move to Saudi Arabia I should learn Arabic... if I move to Canada I should learn Canuckian eh...

| I was born in America, I served and fought for this Country. My entire family came over from Portugal and Brasil. My parents didn't speak english when they moved here in 1968. Guess what, they learned the language and became US citizens. My grandparents on both sides learned to speak english. My family NEVER speaks Portuguese in public because we are in America. This whole spanish BS pisses me off. Every other ethnic group comes here and learns english, but our government and corporations caters to spanish people. Now we know why spanish speaking countries are poor and pathetic. They can't learn and do shit for themselves.. |

Just a side note though ... Puerto Rico is an American territory that teaches both languages (even though spanish is taught first). One of the drivers I trained a few years back was Puerto Rican but had been stateside since he was 16 (he's just a few months older than me). He hated his heritage. I learned a lot from the guy though. I found out that even though he was Puerto Rican, he is still an American citizen, therefore no documents needed other than a birth certificate and a social security card. He even served four years in the US Army. Very classy guy. He hated when people assumed he was hispanic and automatically spoke spanish to him. Despite him speaking such fluent spanish, it irked him to no end, and it just ruined his day after that episode.
I guess my firsthand experiences with people from different hispanic countries has been far different than the experiences of so many others. I also trained two drivers originally from Jamaica and one from Peru. All three of them were 100% legal residents. The Peruvian gentleman probably had the best grasp of the english language, but it was difficult to understand him at times because of his strong spanish accent. There's good people that cross the border for whatever reason, but unfortunately, as in most walks of life, it's those few that filch off the government and expect this country to cater to them that give so many people a bad reputation. |

I disagree with you about this, its not the job itself they find demeaning its the wage that the company wants to pay they find demeaning. Illegals will do backbreaking work for minimum or below minimum wages |

Guess what, they learned the language and became US citizens. My grandparents on both sides learned to speak english. My family NEVER speaks Portuguese in public because we are in America. This whole spanish BS pisses me off. Every other ethnic group comes here and learns english, but our government and corporations caters to spanish people. Now we know why spanish speaking countries are poor and pathetic. They can't learn and do shit for themselves.. |

I honestly said this at my last job. I wanted to fire every last person in my department that was not hispanic and then hire an entire hispanic crew to work for me because they worked harder. You still have the pieces of shit like the ones BK deals with. The Dalton area is starting to have a gang problem because of all the illegal hispanics that reside there now. It all used to be disorganized rabble, and the local police department had a pretty good anti-gang unit in place. But because there's been such a large influx of new illegals, it's become an overwhelming task to keep that under control, and as a result, more of the legal immigrants have crossed the county line toward my neck of the woods just so they aren't as readily associated with the gangs. That's pretty sad, IMO. |

| I agree with Balloon Knot, although I was gone today and didn't give a shit about the race, it is time all these Mexicans learn some English. My daughter knows more Spanish than I do from Dora the Explorer, and she isn't even three. Maybe if they watched a tv show they were interested in English, they would learn some. My sister got the hay trailer stuck in the mud and ice by a large dairy, and we were blocking the road so the Mexicans could not get to work. I had to ask one Mexican, and he couldn't understand shit what I was saying (that is most other people as well) and he pointed me towards the head Mexican who was very fluent in both English and Spanish. I have a lot of respect for that guy, plus he was really nice about getting the tractor to pull us up the muddy hill. |

While almost everyone with cable or satellite can get ESPN or ESPN2, HD is a different story. Both satellite providers have picked up ESPNHD and ESPN2HD. Cable companies have embraced ESPNHD, while ESPN2 HD is a different story. Some cable companies have ESPN2 HD, but most still don't. And just because it's on in one area of the country may not mean it's on in another.
I agree with the general sentiment though...They SHOULD have put spanish coverage on ESPN2 (and henceforth on ESPN2HD), while English should have gone on ESPN.
And to whoever said "try the SAP button".. Mine didn't work. Then again, it usually doesn't work unless i'm watching HBO. |
