Kentucky center leaves early, signs as free agent
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky center Randolph Morris signed a free-agent contract with the New York Knicks on Friday, another big loss to a program already dealing with the departure of coach Tubby Smith.
Morris averaged 16.1 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Wildcats this season and was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference.
He will join a team fighting for an Eastern Conference playoff berth. The Knicks played in Cleveland on Friday night. There was no immediate word on when Morris would join the team.
Morris' decision comes one day after Smith left to become the head coach at Minnesota.
Kentucky spokesman Scott Stricklin said athletic director Mitch Barnhart met with Morris late Thursday night and asked Morris to wait until a new coach was in place before deciding whether to leave.
Morris declared for the 2005 NBA draft following his freshman season, but went undrafted. He returned to the Wildcats after sitting out an NCAA-mandated 14-game suspension, averaging 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 21 games.
Morris blossomed this season, becoming the most consistent player for the Wildcats, who went 22-12 and lost to Kansas in the second round of the NCAA tournament last weekend.
Morris said he "expected" to return to the Wildcats following the loss, but didn't completely rule out leaving for the NBA.
A provision in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement prevented Morris from re-entering the NBA draft and he was given free agent status throughout the 2006-07 season. |

| He'll do well. His game suits him more to the NBA. He'll probably be at the four spot, facing the basket more. If our other seven footer had been healthy (Carter) he would have played the four this year at Kentucky. |

Watching the Knicks game now and Clyde Frasier and Gus Johnson just talked about him.
He's:
6'11,
259 lbs.,
21 yrs. old,
and oh yes:
HE LIKES TO PLAY DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like this kid is an excellent acquisition.
Hmmmmm....... Isiah did something GOOD???????
Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm guessing PHONEY CHOPPERS Dolan is smiling rite about now....................... |

| they were gunna take him in the 05 draft. I remember him working out with the knicks. I guess they thought he needed to develop more. |

I am very skeptical.
If this guy is such a good fit why did another team not sign him?
The Knicks did not pay him a lot of $$ and he was a free agent.
Seems to easy and Isiah/Dolan are not that smart. |

I'd agree. Dolan is a typical clueless owner that has no business running a cable company, a hockey team, a basketball team and certainly not MSG. As much as I hate Isiah, if he has ANY talent in basketball, he has had a couple of good, and surprising acquisitions. But like you said, why was it so easy for the Knicks to pick up this guy? I could see it if he were another Frederic Weiss that would 'never play basketball in America' because that doesn't seem to disuade the Knicks at all, but that's not the case with him and I hope it either blows up in the face of Dolan/Isiah, or somehow works out WITHOUT Dolan and Thomas around to benefit from it.
And on a related note-nice to see the losing ways continue since the re-signing of Isiah. WHat is that: 1 and 5 now? |

Unfortunately, Isaiah's one saving grace throughout his GMing career is that he has made good draft picks. If it weren't for that, he'd be even worse than he actually is.
Dolan just cares about making money. As long as the Knicks are somewhat competitive and fans are coming to the games, that's good enough for him. |

Well, he was playing in the NCAA tournament last Sunday.
In essence, he got another year of seasoning. And remember, the draft is only two rounds, so not being one of the 60 players picked, or whatever it is, he decided to go back to school, because he didn't have an agent. Since he couldn't re-enter the draft, he was a free agent.
Agree with Saul regarding isiah's skills as a talent evaluator. Let's see what the guy can do. Big bodies are at a premium these days. Might just be a steal. |

| I hate to say it but Zeke made a good move ... very savvy to use this little loophole in the draft rules to get a guy that is 1st round talented but basically pay him 1/2 the salary. Even if he sucks, it didn't cost them any picks, and only 1.6 mil. over the next year and ahalf |

we'll see.
it's only about 10 million times harder to play in the NBA. |

| He is a decent player, but nothing more. If he was really good someone would of drafted him 2 years ago or signed him before the Knicks. He is a backup for Curry nothing more than that. |

If you think the Knicks just got a "steal" ,then I have a bridge I would like to sell you.....
I understand he was not drafted and then went back to school and was a free agent. So ANY TEAM could have signed him, as a free agent. The Knicks only guaranteed this guy $800,000 per year for 2 years. Even the smallest market team, could afford to dish that out if they thought they could acquire a legit big man. I understand the Knicks have to try to look "outside the box" but I have zero hope for him. |

| I go to school at UK and Morris is extremely talented but can be lazy as hell. He had some good games for the team this season and was the main reason they got as far as they did but he looked like a completely different player in the NCAA tournament than he did when he wasn't under the national spotlight auditioning for a contract. Morris could be a top post player in the league but he could just as easily be a wasted $1.6 mill. |

I didn't like him when he was in Toronto because he can have flashes of what seem like a GREAT athlete but I don't think he's incredibly talented. He's just good at having spurts of 'highlight reel moments'. And he needs a Daddy, like Charles Oakley to get it out of him on more than an every-fifth-game basis. I bet a lot of guys could appear as gifted as he seems to be-and they could do it without all of the phony dramatics and temporary injuries that he feigns. |

If you are comparing Vince Carter to Randolph Morris then you dont know basketball.
Randolph Morris was an above avergae college player that wond do shit in the NBA. What can he do good, he was strong for college but he will be a little boy in the NBA. NO Jumpshot, no Hops, no laterla movement = GARBAGE |

I'm from Toronto also and was disappointed that he appeared to quit on the team. but the team quit on him much sooner.
don't be stupid about Vince.
Carter is one of the best individual offensive talents in the history of the NBA. well, he's somewhere between 50 and 100...
with a decent supporting cast he would be MVP material in this league.
probably won't happen though.
for some kid from college to be compared to him at this point is LAUGHABLE. the kid hasn't proven he is worthy of an Amaechi career yet.

and Raptors fans, you should be so grateful to Vince for bringing us ALL the decent moments we've had so far in franchise history.
just because we are currently on top of one of the worst divisions in sports history is no reason to think we're taking a single game from Miami first round.
god help us... |

Here's my problem with Carter. Or probably a list. The quitting on a team is obvious but it's even worse when you basically bully a team into getting all of the players you want and still complain. He's another guy with a susperstar attitude but has accomplished nothing. It's one thing for Jordan, even Kobe to want a team that THEY make up, but Carter? And then end up leaving?
My biggest problem, was his constant limping and grimacing-which told me he was more of a showman than a guy who wants to accomplish something. His behaviour at the Olympics pretty much confirmed that he's of low class and lower character. I don't know if he still does that shit now, I couldn't be paid to watch the Nets, but I lived in Toronto for awhile, while he was playing there and I went to about 10-15 games a year and at almost every one of them, he'd get up limping from some pussy foul on him. More often it was if the Raptors were down by 20. And it just got to be a tiring routine.
And being an individual offensive player doesn't say shit to me anymore because regular season games, and even a lot of the playoff games are played about as well, defensively, as the all star game. I used to blame it on them coming into the NBA too soon and not learnign fundamentals and playing defense. That theory has been shot to hell watching the NCAA the last couple of years. Hell, I sit down to watch Gerogetown this afternoon, I barely get settled, 30 seconds in, and the foul parade has started. God I miss sports from the time before getting on ESPN was the main goal. I'm a cranky, old, purist and i'm barely 30 fucking years old. I wonder what's on ESPN classic right now... |

Carter's a career 23+ point a game scorer.
Vince is a dunking and PlayStation character legend. (which is huge amongst the youngsters, so i am informed....)
i've heard and spouted off all the Vince hatred and believe me, i'm the worst critic of crappy Toronto sports teams (f-ing Leafs.... )
SO IT DIDN"T WORK OUT IN TORONTO.
THAT WAS YEARS AGO, GET OVER IT ALREADY!!!!
(oh, and it looks like we're building a 3-point shooting, pussyfied no-rebounding team at present...) |

I think he just has a good agent. Not unlike people like J. Lo ("Trust me! You have Jennifer in this movie and she'll make you millions!). I was so relieved when the Knicks didn't acquire him. I'd hate to have to cheer for a team with the likes of Vince Carter being the marquee player. Hell, it's bad enough with the team of losers we have now. |
