| just so you know, i'm a major baseball stat geek....i play in baseball fantasy leagues even during the off season...i compare players from different generations against each other, where the numbers are normalzied against each other to show who may have been the better player....are you familiar with sabermetrics? vorp, warp and that sorta thing?....i'm not trying to be a dick, just showing that i'm pretty current with how and why, especially with the redsox who subscribe to the sabermetic way of thinking, a team would sign or not sign a player |

Well, look what we have here.............Fact is, Paps COULDN'T LAST a full season and doesn't like the stress of closing while Mo was there in Oct, granted he wasn't needed...Fact is, you are paying for a LEGEND whose name alone strikes fear in hitters, the man who is known to have the most feared pitch in the history of baseball vs a young unproven kid with shoulder probelms who led the AL in blown saves and SUCKED in the 2nd half last year and had to be shut down...

Please let me know what hitters who hit MONTEROUS homers off him in the second half sleep at the plate and the Yanks will sign them. If he makes it to the All Star break, he will once again lead the majors in blown saves after that point, you watch.

i was saying this last year.. right around the time he made the all star team his head and mouth began expanding..
he needs to shut the hell up and pitch...
he didnt make it through a season.. what he pitched was pretty sweet.. but.. he talks WAY too much for my liking.. i wish there was someone on the team that would sit him down and put him in his place...

Papelbon vs. Mo: Mo was 34 and 3 in save opportunities. Paps was 35 and 6. Mo was actually better at what closers are supposed to do: preserve wins. Coupled with the track record (over ten years of dominance vs. less than one season), I doubt very many ML managers would select JP over Rivera THIS YEAR. BP edge to Yankees.
Rotation: Yankees' front three is better than RS. Mussina > Schilling, Wang > Beckett, DM is ? but for now I'll concede he's > Pettitte. Pavano = Wakefield, Igawa is ? but should be at least equal to Tavarez. Slight edge Yankees. NYY also has much more depth in SP at AAA. This is important because teams can't get by with just 5 starters all year. Overall SP edge to Yankees.
Position players: NYY have edge at C, 2B, SS, 3B, CF, RF. RS have edge at DH, 1B and LF. Edge to Yankees.
Bench: Who cares?
Manager: Torre gets edge. |
