Who the fuck does this clown think he is? Fucking punk has pitched just over 100 innings in MLB and he has the balls to say he wants to break any and all of Mariano Rivera's records and make the hall of fame as a closer, HAAAAAAaaaaa....This is a pussy who said he wants to do some SPECIAL things is the game that no other closer has done, LIKE WHAT? WHO THE FUCK DOES HE THINK HE IS? This is a fag that cried late last August that his shoulder was shot and they shut him down. Red Sox medical staff also warned the staff not to use him as a closer due to the risk of reinjuring or damaging his shoulder for good. This is also a kid who cried that he wanted to be a starter, not a closer....now becuase the Sox have no closer and made him their closer, HE WANTS TO CLOSE? haaaaaaaaaa
Look at some facts...
He didn't pitch after Sept. 1 because of a sore right shoulder.
"Jonathan Papelbon is going to enter next spring training as a starting pitcher," Epstein said. "We talked about letting the medical issue dictate that."
Team medical personnel feel pitching every fifth day would lessen the strain on Papelbon's shoulder, Epstein said. And the rotation needs help.
FUNNY THING IS, THE ROTATION takes a huge hit here and Pap's has said many times this spring he didn't like the stress of closer.....
He won't be half teh closer Mo was when his career is over.. |

Dude, please don't even TELL me you are comparing him to Mo? Please don't make a jackass out of yourself here, lets talk facts that he doesn't like stress, can't pitch a full season and already has shoulder problems, OK...
Last season you talked about Papelbon being the second coming of Mariano but he cannot even close one full season without breaking down and he actually led the American League in blown saves over a two and a half month period before the Sox pulled the plug because his self-confidence was shot and they didn't want to lose him mentally, OH, and the Sox were out of the wild card race by the end of August.... |

I agree with Nuge that coming out publicly against Mo's record is dumb. Not only are they both rivals, but he is talking about the best closer in the game. He is an idiot if in March he doesnt think making such stupid comments are not going to make headlines. You have pitched 100 innings, calm the fuck down. Many guys (especially closers) have had great starts to their career, and then fell of the face of the earth. Just shut the fuck up!
I also agree though ,that Nuge started this thread to deflect from the Wang injury. Everybody on the Yankee's starting rotation is now a question mark. Welcome to the club

Wrong again JACKASS, comparing yourself to the greatest in the game when you can't even finish a year as a closer is a PIECE OF SHIT....Crying that you don't wnat to close, that it is too stressfull, your shoulder hurts and you always dreamed of being a starter, then turn around and say you will be the greatest closer anyone has seen is................A PIECE OF SHIT, you catching on pussy?

Yeahm, well thats my point, Paps DIDN'T pitch a full year, fcat his, after the All Star break he was heading south, giving up the most blown saves in baseball before they shut him down. If the Sox had a shot at the wild card in Sept., Paps would of had to picth and oh my would those numbers be way different...PLUS, lets see this prick in the playoffs, win an MVP or two... |

the problem was that they overused him last season...he had never closed before...it was a learning experience...this year they know what to expect and won't make the same mistake twice...will he get hurt again? maybe....will he put up the same numbers? doubtful but possible...but from one season's stats he's on the right track |

OVERUSED him enough to blow his shoulder and shut him down in Sept?

Listen,
Mariano Rivera is hands down the greatest closer of our generation, perhaps in the history of the game. You cannot question his career.
Whether Papelbon put up better numbers in a shortened first season than Rivera ever did is irrelevant. Firstly, stretch those numbers into a whole season - perhaps they change. Secondly, so what? Anyone can get hot for a couple months. Only legends can do it their entire career.
Papelbon is simply a stupid redneck fuck who got lucky. With no bullpen bridge to help him, perhaps Paps can stay healthy the entire season. He'll only have to pitch like twice a week anyways.
Papelbon should set his sights a little lower, like Billy Wagner. :D |

Elroy, I'll take Mo's down year over just about anybodies "up" years. Mo, at what, 37 this year? Will be the best closer in the game. And at the end of the season, watch Theo line up to lick his glorious asshole, begging Mo to come to Boston and pitch. It won't happen, but it'll be fun watching Theo and all you other bandwagon boston fans begging for the greatest closer in the history of the game to come to Boston.

Drop your pants and grab your ankles fag:
Sidelined by a sore shoulder since Sept. 1, Papelbon said Friday he doesn’t expect to pitch again this season, and he’s already planning a switch to the starting rotation next year.
“I’m probably going to be done for the year right now, unless something crazy happens,” Papelbon said. “I just think it’s smart, especially with what happened to (Francisco) Liriano. He’s a young pitcher.
“We haven’t really ironed out everything yet. This was kind of a quick conversation. They know I can start. I know I can start. I think they like, I like it, and I’ll be able to run with it,” he said.
Looking ahead to next season, Papelbon said there are some things he won’t miss about closing. “I won’t miss the stress.

It was just after the Yankees had scored 39 runs in the first three games of what would become the 2006 Boston Massacre the young upstart Papelbon showed up in game four and ended the eighth inning by striking out Cano and Posada with the Red Sox holding a one run lead. The Yankees looked on as Papelbon jumped up and pumped his fist in celebration as if he had won the World Series or something. He should have just left the mound and walked without the arrogance to the dugout. The Yankees would have chalked the game up and tipped their hat to the idiot but no, the idiot had to jump around and pump his fist like he accomplished something in his hyped up pitching career. The Yankees saw they had to knock the arrogance out of the idiot. In the ninth Melky Cabrera doubled and Derek Jeter gave Papelbon the BLOWN SAVE for his record book. The Yankees went on to put the 2006 Boston Massacre in the record books and never looked back. Papelbon got what he deserved and even more as the season went on.
BTW, Papelbon led the American League in blown saves for two and a half months from June 1 to August 15 last season. He had seven in that time frame. More than any other closer. It was not known to alot of people but the New York Yankees knew that Mr. Papelbon was a house of cards ready to collapse. On August 10, 2006, just before the 2006 Boston Massacre (remember Jeter gave him another blown save in the ninth inning of the fourth game) Mr. Papelbon was leading the American League in blown saves recorded since June 1. He was absolutely awful but all the dopey Red Sox fans kept looking at what he did in April and May and were living in a dream world. They are still in a dream world about him and think he is something special. Papelbon pitched all of 68 innings last season. Hopefully, he will get a chance to pitch more this season. Throw hard and throw often, attack the strike zone like there is no tomorrow and maybe Mr. Papelbon will blow out his arm by June this year. |

Looking ahead to next season, Papelbon said there are some things he won’t miss about closing. “I won’t miss the stress.

| Mariano Rivera. He is the best ever. He has 413 saves, a World Series MVP, and four big rings to prove it. Without Mariano Rivera, the Yankees could not have won four World Series in the last decade. Not a chance. In his postseason career, Rivera has 34 saves and an ERA of 0.80. That’s just unheard of. Rivera has done it all with his famous ‘cut’ fastball, a hard and late breaking pitch that moves in on the hands of a lefty hitter. The hitter swings at the pitch because it appears that it will end up over the plate. But during the last fifteen feet of its travel, the ball 'cuts' sharply into the neck of the bat, usually splintering it into about a million pieces. Right-handed hitters usually just wave at it and look ridiculous. It sure is one hell of a pitch. |

If you actually read the fucking article , he gives rivera prop's.
And whats wrong with striving to be the best , i guess your the worst at what you do.
TAMPA - After being moved back into the closer's role for the Red Sox Thursday, Jonathan Papelbon immediately set his goals high, saying he wanted to be the next Mariano Rivera.
"This is something that I would like to do for the rest of my career, just forget about starting and go out there and chase records," Papelbon said in Fort Myers. "Go out there and hopefully what Rivera has done for the Yankees, I can do with the Sox."
Striving to be like Rivera, considered by most to be the greatest closer of all-time, is understandable for a young reliever. Papelbon, who wowed the league with 35 saves and a 0.92 ERA in his stellar rookie season, had an opportunity to pick Rivera's brain during last summer's All-Star Game in Pittsburgh, and the knowledge he took away from that meeting has stuck with the 26-year-old.
"Talking to Rivera is always a good thing," Papelbon said.
"He knows how tough of a grind it is. He's not going to give me everything he knows, I know that. But he's set the standard for what it is to be a closer these days.
"He's kind of the man that, to everybody who is a closer now, he's like the Godfather," Papelbon added.
"He understands that we're going to be going after him. I think what he's done for the role of a closer and for the game of baseball has been a big thing."
Although Yankees and Red Sox aren't supposed to say nice things about each other, Rivera had nothing but compliments when asked about Papelbon. Informed yesterday that Boston had inserted Papelbon back into the closer role, Rivera didn't seem a bit surprised.
"I like to hear that. I spent a little time with Jonathan at the All-Star Game; he's a good boy," Rivera said, recalling their talks. "I think he's doing the right thing. It's good for him."
Rivera is the rare breed of closer who has been able to maintain his excellence for more than a decade.
Although most closers have a shelf life half that long, Rivera believes Papelbon can thrive in the role for a long time.
"He definitely has the abilities; the rest is up to him," Rivera said.
"I think he did a tremendous job last year, and he should do it again this year. He's got that 'something' you need to do the job."
Papelbon missed the final month of the 2006 season with a shoulder problem, paving the way for him to become a starter.
Doctors felt the regular routine of pitching every five days would help him stay healthy, but after spending the spring trying to fill the void left by his move to the rotation, the Red Sox decided to move him back into his former role.
Joe Torre was looking forward to seeing someone else on the mound in the ninth inning for Boston this season, though he admitted he wasn't looking forward to seeing his team face Papelbon on the days he started, either.
"For a young kid, he came in there, took an opportunity and ran with it," Torre said of Papelbon's rookie season.
"He had a great presence out there, was intimidating at times. It didn't look like he was feeling his way out there; he certainly looked comfortable." |

“I won’t miss the stress. |

papelbon's mom....
First of all, this move is 100% what Jonathan wants, it has nothing to do with want anyone else wants. We have had many discussions over the last couple of days and I can say closing is in Jonathan's heart, he thrives on the pressure and competition. His shoulder was never injured, his MRi in 2003 was exactly the same as his MRI in 2006, the muscles were tired and couldn't hold his shoulder joint together. Jonathan is comfortable as the closer he wants the game to be on his "shoulders". He has not been able to concentrate, sleep or enjoy playing without thriving in the postition of closer. I have always said if the day comes when you are no longer having fun playing it's time to get out. He loves closing and I'm just glad he's doing what he loves. |

yeah I believe what his mom says
What his mom says means nothing when it comes to performing on the field.
Remember, everything is all about the $$$$ |

well it's clearly not about money....mariano rivera makes 11 mil....gil meche makes 11 mil...the best closer in history makes as much as a middle of the road starting pitcher |

Are you stupid?
It has to do with when they signed their contracts.
If Mo got signed a contract this winter he would have gotten probabaly $16-$20 million.
Cant compare it to Gil Meche  |

| 20 mil for a closer? and you're calling me stupid? even with baseball a joke, not in this lifetime |

The Red Sox would pay $20,000,000 easy to have Mo pitch for them.
And you know it! |

| no friggin way....there have been too many examples of guys being thrown into the closer role and performing well to spend that much money on a closer....see jason isringhausen, dustin hermanson, ryan dempster and, of course, papelbon....why do you think the sox signed pineiro...because they aren't going to spend a zillion dollars on a closer and hoped he could do the job |
|

Dude, you sound like an idiot.
NONE of those guys are named Mariano Riviera.
He is easily worth $15,000,000 per season, and another $5,000,000 just to get him off the Yankees. |
|
|
| Apoc13 |
| he's a free agent next season, isn't he?....let's assume he puts up similar numbers this season as last....i'll bet you anything you want that he won't sign with the sox for 20 or even 15 mil...you're not arguing with nuge here, i have a clue |
