People on sherdog were saying what a horrible thing it is that the UFC bought Pride. How can it be horrible? They are going to run as a separate org and have a super bowl ppv once a year. I'm hoping CC gets revenge and kicks Fedor's head into the stands. I know Fedor is the best but his nutthuggers make me hate the guy.

So this is not a monopoly but sirius/xm would be?
wickedhahn
No this is not a monopoly. Their still is BoDog fights *rumor is Fedor might sign a long contract with them*, EliteXC, K-1 does a mma ppv, Cage Rage, IFL, Rumble on the Rocks. ect.
Jack the Hammer
Not a monopoly but the UFC/PFC now has 90% of all the big names in MMA locked in, and if they do good things with it will be the dominate force in MMA for many many years to come. I don't see why Fedor would sign elsewhere if has has an inch of competative spirit in him at all.
michaelmurry
i think fedor is still under contract with pride???? im not sure cuz he is the champ, if he isnt that makes the prospect of an open HW devision a cool idea. i think they will resign all the fighters to a new contract something along the lines of the shogun signing 2 fights with pride 2 fights with ufc.

Timmy will never be the HW champ ever again. too many competitors.

sad to say but i think chucks reign will end soon too as well

Source: UFC buys Pride for less than $70M
NEW YORK -- The majority owners of Ultimate Fighting Championship have agreed to buy their biggest mixed martial arts rival, Pride Fighting Championships, in a deal that will establish megafights among the outfits' titleholders and possibly attract huge pay-per-view audiences.

Company executives declined to comment on the sales price, but a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta will purchase the Japan-based Pride for less than $70 million. The person was not authorized to speak to reporters and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The deal was completed Tuesday and was announced during a news conference in Tokyo, where Lorenzo Fertitta has been negotiating with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, the majority owner and chief executive of Dream Stage Entertainment Inc., Pride's owner.

"We have been talking to Pride for probably about 11 months," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It's been a long, drawn-out process but we finally were able to put the two brands together."

To buy the company, the brothers created a new entity called Pride FC Worldwide Holdings LLC. The newly formed company will take over Pride assets, including its trademarks, video library and valuable roster of fighters, from Dream Stage. The Fertitta brothers, who own Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, the parent company of UFC, intend to keep the well-known Pride name and promote fights under that brand.

The acquisition marks a new phase in the brothers' quest to dominate the burgeoning world of mixed martial arts since they bought the struggling UFC in 2001.

"This is really going to change the face of MMA," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL."

The deal allows the Fertitta brothers to broker the biggest MMA fights possible in the near future, increasing their influence in this sports entertainment business.

"We will be able to literally put on the fights that everyone wants to see," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It will allow us to put on some of the biggest fights ever."

I found something bad about UFC buying Pride.

White said Pride would adopt the same rules that are used in the United States and expressed a desire to use the so-called unified rules around the world. Soccer kicks and knees to the head were legal in Pride fights in Japan, but they were outlawed in two shows that were held at the Thomas & Mack Center.

However, White said any fight held with the Pride banner would continue to be in a ring. UFC fights are in a cage.

"This is a sport and we're going to follow the unified rules that were established in New Jersey and then in Nevada," White said. "It's a sport -- mixed martial arts -- and the sport should have the same rules everywhere. As far as I'm concerned, if an organization doesn't follow these rules, it's not MMA. It's something else, but that's not MMA."

i assume that applies to DOWNED opponents only, since flying knees to the head are still a staple of UFC. i support these rule changes, head strikes are exciting but they are in a different class of dangerous from most other MMA moves...

but if they're adopting these unified rules, WHY THE FUCK WONT THEY FOLD PRIDE IN?!? this business model is fairly silly, and i've always preferred the octagon to the ring...the latter is ill-suited to MMA and has far too many associations with boxing and pro-wrestling. fuck that shit.

I'm glad they got rid of the stomps and soccer kicks but i loved the knees. It helps strikers against wrestlers who go for take downs every second. If a wrestler gets caught in the sprawl bam he eats some knees.

Tony if you think about it in a octagon a ground dominated fight will flourish ala pressing against the fence sucking out the legs in a double leg and ground and pound

with the ring you have a more standup orientated fight it has its advantages and its disadvantages

it gives the fans of mma a variety and difference.

the buiseness model is actually kinda cool with the grandprix and such but what noeone is seeing is the rounds will be 3 5 min rounds (non title) and 5 5 min rounds (title) with the fight being scored on a round to round basis and not bushido rules with a 10 min round and a 5 min round and the fight being judged as a whole.

Bushido Rules

* In BUSHIDO fights are two rounds (instead of three). The first round is ten (10) minutes, and the second round is five (5) minutes. There are no extra rounds. If the fight goes the distance then judges decide on a winner.

* For BUSHIDO "Challenge Matches," fights are two (2) rounds. The first and second rounds are five (5) minutes each. If the fight goes to the full time limit no decision will be rendered. The fight will be ruled a draw.

* In BUSHIDO, red cards are used in the same way that yellow cards are used in PRIDE FC. In BUSHIDO, if fighters commit the following actions, they shall be given a red card by officials: Stalling or failure to initiate any offensive attack, making no attempt to finalize the match or damage the opponent, and holding the opponent's body with the arms and legs to produce a stalemate. A red card results in a 10% deduction/fine of the fighter's fight purse. A major difference in the penalty card system between PRIDE FC and BUSHIDO is that in PRIDE FC a total of three yellow cards results in a disqualification, while in BUSHIDO red cards can be given out in an unlimited number without disqualification.

Most PRIDE FC matches are broken down as follows:
Round 1 10 minutes
Round 2 5 minutes
Round 3 5 minutes

There are two-minutes between rounds.
