actually there may be a mix of nature/nurture involved in various bigotries and biases...in the case of homophobia, while studies have shown that many men with acute homophobic reactions are overcompensating for homoerotic desires on their part, that overlaps with other studies showing that large percentages of men display homophobia as a reaction to being called or perceived as queer themselves...especially if that "yer a fag!" accusation came from a female...and regardless of the actual orientation of the man being berated! |

I have always suspected that straight guys feel that being gay has to do with "lowering" your status. that is, they see this as acting like a female and being female is lower than being male. I could be wrong. and maybe that was more true when i was a child.

Lots of guys don't want to work with women either.
I can't tell you how often I've had to put up with that kind of bigotry in my career.
I never screamed about it, sued anyone or had a big fight because I know that when people are this blind nothing will make them see.
What I have always done in my career is be Very picky about who I work with. When someone proves to be an asshole I just leave. I only want to work with people who appreciate me.
The best people I found were guys that respected me, never treated me like a second class person and were afraid of losing me to some other company. (telling me that I am so talented that i could work Anywhere).
Together we made wonderful work which recieved awards.
I was respected for my work ethic, my loyalty and my ability to learn fast and solve problems quickly. None of that was in any way related to the sex of my body.
If I had been discouraged by the sexist assholes early in my career i would never had eventually known the supperior people i did work with.
The people that missed out are those that had the attitude "People Don't Want to play ...... with homos"
