Stiletto 10: Yes or No? - Click HERE to go to the original thread with graphics

I'm still deciding on whether or not to take part in that Sirius deal of a Stiletto 10 for 50% off (with the 6-month sub.). I want to be able to have the option of listening to live radio, and be able to store music, without paying for it (don't you have to pay for music on the 100?, 'cause it says the 100 has "Yahoo! Music Jukebox™ - provides a simple and easy way for you to purchase, download your favorite SIRIUS songs") I'm also looking on eBay for 10s and 100s.

I went to Dogstar to see about repeaters, and here's what I got. The red circle is the area where I would use the Stiletto most, if I get one.

What I'm basically wanting to know is, should I get the Stiletto 10? For people that own a Stiletto 10, how do you like it?
VacateTheWord
I don't own a Stiletto yet - I'm planning on getting one when the price comes down. From what I've been told, however, the 100 is the way to go - much more storage for music/Howard. Right now the best price I've found for it is $299.00 which is still too steep for me, but I'll be placing an order when it hits $200.00.

I've been wanting a portable unit for some time - good luck.
STLSteve
the 10 doesn't have wifi capability, if that matters to you.
howies5incher
I would say for the price,it's a good deal.10 hours of storage is alot when you think about it.
I have a 100 and I barely used 5% of it because I mostly delete what I record and listen to.Wifi from the 100 isn't used that much because you can't record off it anyways.
Go with the deal, you won't be disappointed.
And if you decided to sell it,I'll buy it :D

I just purchased the stiletto sl10 and to say Im disappointed is an under statement. It is the biggest most useless piece of garbage I've ever seen, it is nothing but a paper weight. You absolutley get no reception from this unit unless you are outside with no trees in an open prairie, THEN you MIGHT reciever a broken signal if you're lucky. Glass alone will render this unit unable to acguire a signal, and if you are dumb enough to buy this piece of junk you'll get used to those words "acquiring Signal" because thats all it does. Dont waste your money, shame on sirius for selling an inferior product to your customers and shame on Howard for going on record saying what a great product the stiletto is and giving it the beth approval, suggesting she uses it to jog with no problems and loves it...straight out lie she must be using an IPOD or something. Im really mad at this point as you can see. Howard rants about how crap XM products are, Sirius is'nt muchbetter. I always thought howard was honest to his fans and this is disappointing maybe thats what pissesme off the most.

We have a much higher return rate on Stiletto 10s than on Stiletto 100s which we are selling for $280 shipped.

First of all one has to realize it's not going to get reception everywhere, even with a repeater. The people who get that are far more happy then those that expect it to work in the same places as a cell phone (which has been around for a long time and still has no coverage spots)

The other thing is the software in the SL10 seems to give people a lot more trouble than the SL100.

If it comes down to getting something that doesn't perform like it should for half off or paying for something that is great, I'd choose the latter.

The SL100 is a lot better and it's just the MP3 ability or the extra storage or the Wifi. It seems to function better as well.

Thanks for the response but I'm sure you'll understand that it doesn’t comfort me much. IF the portability of theSL10 is inferior to the 100 then it is Sirius corp. responsibility to let us know that before we purchase the unit. Fact is the "Stiletto" series are "suppose" to be portable and are marketed as such. When purchasing the SL10 you are already compromising HD space, wifi and mp3 this can justify the lower price…Portability can not. Suggesting that the more expensive stiletto is more portable is misleading bordering on fraudulent. The Portability of the Unit is the major reason I purchased it and to find that it isn’t is very frustrating. I hope Sirius figures out a way to correct this problem. Until then I will not endorse Sirius or spread the word, I’m too angry.

would you say though that the 10 is fine if used with the car kit mostly?
My wife has a S50 in her car now,but I would think the 10 would be better for her,so if there's a deal to be had I would look into it.

It will work fine docked in a car or home kit. They retail from anywhere between $59-$69+ each. If portability isn't what you are looking for your s50 should do the trick just fine.

I really don't think Sirius is misleading or doing any false advertising with the SL10. I know they don't ever say anything like "get reception indoors with no problems" that just not what they say.

The Stiletto 10 is much more of a good plug and play receiver than a good portable receiver. My point is to be honest and help people out with choosing the right product. Some of that job means that I have to take people's anticipations and tell them that they aren't the most realistic. I know when we are kids that we often think certain toys are going to do a lot more than the really do.

With that in mind, I just don't see the SL10 as being that successful. I really think the SL100 is a lot better. I see it also in the return rate for them. They are returned to us a good bit more then the SL100.

It might be a bit better for her, but I'm not sure what exactly she's looking for. If your S50 is working well, then let it ride out for a bit. Then if something happens get ready to upgrade.

The streamer GT is a great plug and play receiver and it costs a hella lot less then the SL10. Point is you dont get what you pay for with this radio. I can appreciate your assertiveness in this matter and I think its refreshing tha a retailer actually stands by what he sells and addresses customers and potential customers issues. Selling these radios is your business speciffically sirius radios, so I dont expect you to show sirius in a negative light. This is a pretty expensive "toy" and in the end customer satisfaction is what counts. Misleading customers is unacceptable in today's Market and Sirius needs to address issues such as this if they intend on being in the gamefor the long haul. I will say this, I really like the service for the most part and bought radios for everyone in my family, content is awesome and dont listen to anything but sirius and that includes CDs, terrestrial radio or even MP3 players. I hate getting burned and rightnow I feel like I have.

Have you downloaded the update? A friend of mine owns an SL10 (we were both disapointed in the reception when we played with it) and after he installed the update, he claims it gets much better reception. I haven't witnessed this yet and I'm skeptical of that, but he's not normally one to make shit up.

It might be worth a try...

Hello people just want to report that I did dothe fw update by USB and IM happy to report the reception has indeed improved. Im not sure about the connection between update and reception, but the change islike night and day. Although not perfect it has improved tremondously enough to make me feel much better about this whole deal. I probably should have went with the SL100 but maybe Ill upgrade when my sub runs out and ebay this unit.

Thanks again

Isn't that crazy? I hardly believed my friend when he told me that.

My 10 received perfectly if I stood on top of the highest building for miles and said a small prayer. Returned it. Something about having the antenna attached directly to my head just felt weird too.

I just got the SL10 and this thing freezes up every 5 minutes almost. I have to reset it by removing the battery most times. about half the time it will freeze up within 30 seconds of resetting it then be fine for another 5 minutes till it does it again. I downloaded and installed the most recent software version and it actually seems to be worse. any ideas?

Weird. I think you might want to reinstall the firmware. Not sure how to do it exactly, but there should be something about it in the troubleshooting part of the manual. I got mine cheap at Costco ($110 w/car kit) and knew its limitations (lack of storage, no WiFi, inability to import MP3's) before purchasing. So far it has worked just fine. No lock-ups like you describe. It suits my purpose of recording Howard and playing back the parts I couldn't listen to when I was working. It's really nice being able to skip through the f'ing commercials.
litslum
If you're gonna go for it I'd go through Ebay.

But honestly, the S50 is more worth the cash then the Stiletto 10. The Sirius live units are just shit.

Back to Costco it went. Damn thing started freezing up on me and rebooting all the time. Since I read of others with this problem, I didn't get a replacement. The FM transmitter blew as well. With my sportster, I could keep it in my family room attached to my sound system and listen to it on my clock radio upstairs. Not with the S10. I also have multiple cars and didn't want to spend money on each of them in order to hardwire separate antennas. I might check out the Stiletto 2 once the price falls to the $150 range. Starting to think streaming from the internet is the best way to go. FM Transmitters that connect to the computer can be had for cheap.

I have the Stiletto 10 and I really enjoy it. The only bothersome thing is the damn headphone/atennae. Sheesh, it's clunky and the ear part isn't very comfortable. I wish there was an alternative to the headset.
cameronj
Alas, there IS an alternative to the "ear dagger" headsets.

I bought a pair or replacement headphones for the Stilletto 2 and they work with the 10. These headphoes stay on the outside of the ear and have a much nicer cushion. I think the price was under $50 with shipping. I've seen pairs on ebay too, but usually for more.

Wow...nifty! I will look into it. Thank you very much!!

I just got off the phone with Sirius and as a valued customer was being offered the Stiletto for $99 with 3 months free service then if I want this past 3 months, will have a second subscription for $6.95 as long as I have an active account. It arrives next week.
bunny42
Got the replacement headset for the Stiletto 10. Haven't tried it on yet, but it looks to be a more snug fit than the original headset.
BolinasCali
speaking of software updates...does anyone have a mac compatible cd or a link to download mac compatible software updates for either the S100 or the Stiletto 2? I went through 5 replacement radios for the S100 so far, and now I'm trying the S2. And guess what, the S2 malfunctioned on 4/10 of all days!!!!! The recorded file was so corrupt that it fucked up the entire machine and I had to RESET and ERASE it to get it working again. So I missed the entire show, apparently forever since there isn't a replay for this day.
