DIRECTV to Test VOD; Will Include HD Movies
Full service expected to roll out in July.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (April 1, 2007) -- DIRECTV says it will begin testing its Video on Demand service this month and it will include High-Definition movies.

That's according to a report in Multichannel News.

TVPredictions.com reported last year that DIRECTV was preparing an on-demand service that would include high-def. But the satcaster has been uncertain about launch dates.

Multichannel News writes that DIRECTV plans to roll out the on-demand service in July after the initial testing, which begins this month. The publication did not report whether the testing would take place in consumer homes or employee homes.

The VOD service will be available via Broadband lines connected to DIRECTV's HD DVRs.

The satcaster says it has signed about 12 networks to offer dedicated on-demand channels, including the Food Network and Discovery Channel.

In addition, 2,000 movies will be available on demand, many of which will be in high-def.

DIRECTV is hoping the VOD offering will counter cable TV's On Demand lineup, which includes thousands of hours of programming.

So, if this is all true, then everytime In Demand says Satellite is 'incapable' of having on demand techonology it's absolute fucking BULLSHIT....If Direct-TV is going to have all these different channels on demand come June, how far off can Howard TV be?

even if it is true howard tv has an exclusive contract with cable till i think like 2009,so directv would have to wait till the contract is up

Which is why iN DEMAND Networks (a private company that is owned by a consortium of cable companies) will never make the HTV content available to SAT-TV providers.

It is ironic that we have to use “terrestrial” TV providers instead of satellite TV to get Howard TV. It is also ironic that Sirius has most of their music channels on Dish Network, yet Howard 100/101 is not on there.

I'm thinking about making the switch from Dish Network to Time Warner just to get Howard TV.

let me say i have had driectv and it sucked, but it is better if your comparing it to dishnetwork, im with time warner cable out in cali and its way better, i love howard on demand but i wish they would stop doing shit on bigfoot, and show more of the show. i still think some of the best shit is talked about while robin dose her news, why not show robins daily news on the daily show list. its not like there not filming , but it might be to much work for Scott Dafuckhead i mean Scott depace, he to fucking busy with limba

dosha i agree with you 150% the bigfoot stuff is so old i can't stand him imean it would be cool if they did a bigfoot show likw once every few monthes but this is to much.PAULSUKHU to i say it's worth making the switch to cable howard tv is great but their are other good things cable ondemand has a bunch of free stuff plus if you get hbo or any channel like that they put their top movies on demand for free (as long as you have that channel) for example i have hbo and starz so for no extra charge i get hbo and starz ondemand with a dish you just get the channel
