RESULTS -- MEMPHIS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING WITH HULK HOGAN
By: Andy McNair
4/28/2007 12:52:12 AM
I just got back from the show at the Fed-X Forum. Here are the results:
Cujo the Moondog beat The Barbarian.
Mr. Hughes lost to Greg Valentine.
Jazz won beating Miss Passion and Christine Richi
Al Green fought Abdullah The Butcher to a no decision in a very bloody match.
Bill Dundee (it was good to see him again) and Dutch Mantell with Jimmy Valiant with them defeated Koko B. Ware (good to see him too) and Bobby Eaton and Reverend SLick was with them.
Brutus Beefcake and radio broadcaster Bubba The Love Sponge beat the New Assassins. After the match Beefcake used a sleeper hold on Assassins' manager Big Cheese and Brutus cut his hair!
Brian Christopher defeated Buff Bagwell.
Ricky Morton teamed with Kid Cash to beat Flex and Tim Grind.
----Hulk Hogan won against the former Big Show Paul Wight with a legdrop. Hogan got some huge ovation! |

Yes Abby is in his seventies and is still spilling blood with the best of them and when he isn't doing that he is running his rib/Chinese food joint in ATL. |

I think its sad that some of these guys are still wrestling. Not because they are old, but because some of them are hall of famers and they are back to doing house shows for 3k crowds. They should be enjoying their glory years in peace. I would be embarrased if i was hulk Hogan. Its not like he needs the money.
OK, i admit it, its because they are OLD :) |

| These guys do it for fun and it makes them feel good to give back even if it is a small crowd. |

I went to the show last night, and I've got to be clear on something. Memphis Wrestling has been in a SERIOUS decline in the past few years. I'd go as far to say it's on life support right now. So, while looking down at the crowd, I'd say it was about 6 or 7 thousand, I was really impressed. With everything Vince did to try to kill this show from happening, I'm surprised it was as (good) as it was (not really but i'm trying to be supportive). I mean, Vince even tried to pay off the Fed Ex Forum so they wouldn't allow the event to go on. We're talking the show was a buncha really old "legends" and it was good to see some of them doing their thing again. Yes Abdullah looked ... wow ... i've never seen old guy man boobs that extended under the arms, nor have i seen someone wear their tights right up under their man boobs like that. Think Yokozuna if he'd lived is what I'm getting at. But he did have his fork, and he did stab the guy. However, they never got the match into the ring, we're thinking Abdullah couldn't climb the stairs.
When I say the crowd was small i'm not trying to be mean. In all honesty, the crowd was great. They were loud, active, and into it. Bubba actually got a really really good pop. I was marking out for him big time. He came down to FTE, wore a bubba army t-shirt, black shorts and red boots. Brutus Beefcake came down with him to FTE. Their opponents were a recently repackaged tag team from Memphis Wrestling who are honestly horrible lol. Bubba started, but spent most of the match outside the ring waiting for the hot tag from Beefcake when he went on a Bubba rampage. I seem to remember Bubba trying a hip toss, or a body slam i can't remember which. But he mostly did a LOT of running forearms and clotheslines. He finished off the match with a Bubba Bomb off the middle rope that got a really good pop. Small crowd but they loved them some Bubba. After the match while Beefcake was holding the other teams manager in a sleeper hold, Bubba was threatening the opposing team with castration gesturing with Beefcakes lawn sheers in a very penile chopping manner every time the masked assassins tried to come into the ring to save their manager from his eventual hair cut. The whole thing after the match played on so long they had to play FTE twice (they lowered audio for the f bomb i think, cus i don't remember hearing it). Bubba pulled the St Jude kid down from the crowd held him up on his shoulder for the vh1 camera and the kid was going nuts lol that was cool.
The pop that Hogan got from the crowd, for such a small crowd, it seemed louder than anything I'd heard at a WWE event in a long time. My very cynical friend asked me if I thought they piped in crowd cheers to make it sound good, and nah, it was the same cheers that had been going on all night, just a LOT louder. I'm not going to say Hogans match was good or bad. I mean, ... Hogan has had 1 match since the mid 80's and you know exactly what you're going to see. Hogan does a test of strength there's some shoving, Hogan gets beat down, Hogan breaks a submission, Hogan gets beat down, Hogan eats a Finisher, Hogan Hulks Up, Slammed Paul Wight (hope he didn't hurt his back), Leg Drop 1-2-3 Huge crowd pop. The fans were very vocal during Hogan's match. Which although small, they were marking for everything Hogan did.
All in all, the card was absolutely horrid. So the people that were there with us, give you all the props in the world for being supportive. It was hard to get a good show when you've got Vince bearing down on ya. I mean, the Rock and Roll express were scheduled to be there, but it turns out that one of the guys does training work for the WWE, so vince pulled him out of the show. I can't blame a guy (lawler) for not wanting to lose his job.
Oh well, If anything I'm just hoping that Memphis Wrestling tries to allign itself as a farm for TNA now. |

| so is anything being covered on sirius or not? |

| Ive seen more people at the DMV then at this match |

I don't know how they can make the show interesting on Sirius. The crowd was small...about 3,000 (my guess). I counted 5 people with McGillicutty shirts on. Alot of yellow and red. Also, a lot of "country comes to town" people!!!
Bubba got a good reception. He walked out with Brutus to the FTE music. Bubba had alot of ring rust to him. It looked like he struggled to climb in the ring and then up on the second turn buckle to drop an elbow. He wore his Bubba Army T-shirt and some basketball style shorts. Looked like he might have have borrowed Hulks wrestling boots.
Hogan went over as expected. He came out Stone Cold style with knee braces on both knees. Looked like he favored the right knee more. The match was slow and typical but understanding since Hogan doesn't have any "current" wrestling moves. He kinda missed Paul with the foot to the face but Paul adjusted and rolled out of the ring as he should have to sell it. Then match ended as they all do with the big leg drop.
My grip was Bubba CONSTANTLY kept adjusting his ball sack. He should have worn some tights under the shorts or something. It was funny to see him put a move on one of the assassins and then get up and adjust. He was trying to get in the ring to help Brutus but the ref would make him go back to the corner and he would be adjusting all the way back. He must have been markin out to Brutus really good. |

| Looked like Bubba was pulling the bottom of his shirt (Gut sticking out conscience) like Bobba boey does during the stern show |

It was recorded for Siri
My gut says a special next week of just the Bubba & Hogan matches
Both combined were far less than 30 minutes |

| by the looks of the video it looked like a trainwreck. I love Hogan and everything, but the more he talks about the Hulk Hogan appreciation tour the more I think it's a bad idea. although I would love to see a 70+ year old Abdullah the Butcher in action. |

Abby has always been awesome no matter who he was wrestling. I've seen a video of him taking on Andre and while not much happened in the ring it was pretty awesome to see those two working in the ring together. If you want to see Abby in his prime then you need to track down a compilation disc of his work against Bruiser Brody(a man who died way before his time at the hands of a fucking douche bag) from Puerto Rico, a territory so bloody that it seemed even the crowd was blading. |

| Man I love Bubba to death..but after seeing those pictures, they should have held this in that barn where they found Shaquille O'Neil's character in Blue Chips..you could have driven a Mack Truck through the Fed Ex Forum....jus sayin... |

| McMahon is always trying to control everyones careers if they worked for him in the past. Ge hates the fact that Hootie don't need him. He has plenty of fans, plus the Bubba Army... |

| The best outcome of Vince's pulling WWE talent for good, would be to have TNA and Jarrett back in Memphis wrestling! I doubt that Lawler would leave his gig, and Vince most likely wouldn't allow him to appear with TNA talent on TV, but the history of Memphis Wrestling is Lawler/Jarrett(mostly Jerry, not Jeff). There's been some TNA promo's with Hogan,....they are now based in Florida, not too far from Hoganville,...and Hogan can generate Buzz,...so,...I can see why Corey Macklin risked so much in not pulling the show, and risking losing WWE talent for good. The prospect of using TNA talent/ and Hogan, and sticking it to Vince again seems tempting! |
