Here is one of my wood turtles, RIP.

They are one of the smartest turtle species. They have been known to climb 5' chain link fences to get to something they can see on the other side. They also regularily beat rats in a rat-maze to get the food.

I got more attatched to my 2 wood turtles than any other turtle, they recognized me with good things like food, and would follow me around and act goofy. They are difficult to obtain (legally), they are very protected, quite rare and because of their intelegence often poached for the pet trade.

My Sulcata tortoise as a baby

He is now about 25 lbs, and growing quickly. They are the largest mainland tortoise in the world. They eat grasses and other leafy greens, and also their own poop ( to replenish their gut bacteria).

This is a juvenile Mississipi Map Turtle.

Very cute. I ended up giving it to some friends as a house warming gift when I was toning down on my reptile collection.

Wow, Canadian turtles are very white! My turtles have dark shells and skin. Very deep color. I give them plenty of UV light. I never had tortises, I don't know enough about them. Turtles are my specialty. :D

I also used to keep a few types of box turtles. One of the best pet turtles in my opinion, don't need any more water than a water bowl and are easy to feed.

This is a male Eastern Box turtle

I used to have a large breeding group of Florida box turtles and 3 toed box turtles, I'll post the pictures later on when I find them.

Here is an alligator snapping turtle I had until recently (when an electric heater malfunctioned and overheated 1 of my 2 reptile rooms, killing many of my favorite reptiles)

He was only a few years old, they can get really huge. They also have a little worm like appendage in their mouth, and use it to lure in fish with a large open mouth. When the fish goes to take the bait, they clamp down on it. I have a picture of that somewhere that I took, I'll post it when I find it.

White turtle shells help them blend into the snow to avoid predators.

Tortoises, youn map turtles and a lot of other turtles have lighter colored shells. You have a turtle species with a darker colored shell than they do.

I use uv lights for the turtles, and try to get them outside as much as I can while the temperature allows it. If I was living in Florida like you I'd be keeping a lot of sun loving lizards outside as well. You could catch a few cool species that normally come from all parts of the world, right there running wild in Florida.

By the way, I really like your pictures, especially the last one. I really like those turtles.

I had a baby Snapping turtle for a while. he grew a few inches over time, and I figured it was time to let him go, since I had other turtles, and I didnt want them fighting.
I went Upstate NY, and let him go in a big pond. He's probably still up there!

There are lizards, Iguanas, etc here..but I don't have the room to keep them right now. Turtles take car of themselves, other than feeding them. They get excited when they see me, they start swimming over, and flapping their arms..FOOD! heheee

Thanks, he's the only one who isn't camera shy. My other 2 won't let me get good pics of them. If i do, I have to get it quick, and it's usually out of focus before they run off. They like to play games with me, you should see some of the stunts they pull!
I lucked out on these shots!

I drove past a roadside stand Wednesday that was selling turtles. Not sure what kind of turtles, and not sure how much they were asking, but I thought it was a strange sight!

Yeah, that really sucked and was a terrible way to end the terrible year that 2006 was. Now that the shock of it all has worn off and I can look past the 'oh my god my poor fluffy died' sadness part, I am mad at myself for not putting some kind of thermostat protection to keep that from happening. I had some very rare (endangered) breeding projects in that room, it is a real shame on a lot of levels.

I'm considering selling off anything that is rare and really valuable, I'm still really gun shy to enter the rooms thinking I'm going to find somethig devastating. (and yes, I put made sure to put an overtemp thermostat in line since then)

Do you know if it was an alligator snapper, or a common snapper?

Here is my 40 lb common snapper, the garbage can!

Mine actually looked more like an Alligator Snapper. Very rough, hook on it's beak, wide, strong. Just a baby, but it grew fast, and I let it go before it became too dependent on humans.

In the late 60's they used to sell baby turtles at drug stores and grocery stores. They came with their own plastic littlle 'habitats'. Zeke, Mr. Tucson and Badgerbreeze probably remember this. :D

Then they found out that a lot of babys were getting salmonella poisoning from putting turtles in their mouths. Now, baby turtles under 4'' (I think) are illegal to sell in the U.S, and Canada can not import turtles into the country for the pet trade.

Cats give babies more salmonella (and other worse things) than turtles do, but you don't see any laws against those filthy creatures.

I used to hate that when I had cats. They would lick their ass, and then lick my face, lick their ass, lick my face.

Finally I decided to cut out the middle man and just started licking their asses.

Depends on what you call small I guess. A lot of pond turtles dont' grow over 12'', and there are many RES and other turtles looking for homes sitting in rescues all over the U.S. Buying one from a petstore or something, and adding to the demand and the problem is not the way to go.

I have to check one of those out, once i get settled. I wouldn't mind getting more young guys, once I get my current guys into a large pond when I get my house. They are getting big and heavy! They're disgustingly healthy!

Chuck,
Like Scales said, most water turtles don't get extremely big. Red Eared Sliders max out at about 6-9". Diamondbacks grow a bit larger. Painted Turtles grow to about 10" max. I have a Florida Peninsula Cooter that will probably get bigger than 12".
Most important, if you get one- Get a wide tank/pond liner so they have room to swim. Feed them low protein turtle sticks from the store and/or small fish (Guppies, goldfish). And #1 important- get a UV light setup! They need Ultra-violet to live. Opposite of us, we die with too much.
Keep the water clean, give him rocks to climb on, and "sun" himself..and he'll be healthy as hell!

I forgot about box turtles. They are the best pet turtles in my opinion.

They don't need a lot of water (they aren't swimmers), they are full grown at about 6''-8'', and are pretty easy to care for properly.
