Noticed a few mentions about fishing, figured I'd start a thread.

The season up here in Saskatchewan starts on Saturday. I brought a few of my tackle boxes in and sorted through everything and organized it all into various tackle boxes.

I haven't been this excited about fishing season since I was a kid. I have lots of cool tacke to try out this year, and plan to get a lot of use out of the boat and motor I bought last year.

The majority of my fishing is done on the South Saskatchewan river (4 mile drive from my house) - but there are a few lakes and resevoirs around here that I go to also.

In the river, walleye are the main fish targeted. The odd pike can be caught as well, and is always a bonus. Burbot (very good eating) are plentiful, as well as Goldeye (very good when smoked). All Sturgeon caught must be released, but I usually catch a few every year while trying to catch walleye or burbot.

I gotta get caught up with that thread.... sorry, my bad.

I tied my own flies for a bit when I was young. It was mostly artistic re-creations of what I thought the fish would like to bite on rather than recreations of what they actually eat.

My favorite thing is catching species not normally caught with a fly. I caught a 15 lb pike in the river on a big fly when I was 12 or so, probably the most fun and memorable fish I've ever caught. Until he broke the leader on shore and flipped out into the water and got away, that is...

I bought a lot of flies this winter, goldeye and perch are really fun on the fly rod - and they are stocking a few water bodies near here with trout.

I unzip my fly, and the fish jump on land :D

I tie mostly imitations, flies that already exist. I have made a few of my own creations, and they caught fish! Plus, for the money you can spend on one fly, I cam make about 10 or more.

My time is worth more than yours :)

I do have some cool peacock feathers and other materials, i think I will make some really large flies to try out on the river.

I know you discussed fishing in your hobbies thread, but since I made this one, mind saying what species you fish for here?

I have plans to travel to the Eastern part of this province to try catching some catfish. They have channel cats and black tailed cats. I'm assuming that my still fishing river rigs and methods with bait will work to catch them, how do you do it?

Wow, let me think..

freshwater= Trout, bass, pickerel, muskie, panfish...what else...

salt= blues, stripers, fluke, flounder, sea bass, porgy, whiting, all types..I've been fishing snce i was young, and I've covered a lot of species in both types of water.

Been a dream of mine since I was a kid since to catch a muskie. Have never fished any waters that hold them.

When you say pickerel, do you mean a pike, close member of the muskie, or do you mean a walleye, member of the perch family. Up here, the slang term for walleye used by most is 'pickerel' but correctly that name belongs to a pike like fish the books say.

Fisherman here also, I go for Trout, Salmon and some times Bass. Haven't been fishing in like almost a year. I need to go. Use to do salt water fishing and caught my share of sharks and rays. Bat rays and Lepoard sharks are cool.

I mainly fish cut Shad/Skipjack with circle hooks on a slip sinker rig (no roll) tight lineing from bank....I wanna start fishing for Flathead on the Mississippi this summer but Ill have to go at night...and get some live bait.

But for Channels/Blues you cant go wrong with fresh cut bait on the bottom.

Pickerel in NY are young pike. I've never seen a Walleye called a pickerel. Damn Canadians! :D

I know i have pics, but nothing scanned. I'll have to dig them out sometime, and get them scanned in here. I'll post them up. I don't take a lot of pics when i go fishing, I just have fun doing it. But i do have pics over the years.

I like to kill fish....... :D

Northern Pike and Walleye are the most common in lakes here, along with Yellow or Golden Perch, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Arctic Char, Burbot and Whitefish. most common method I use is trolling with Len Thompson spoons. a GPS, a fishfinder (for finding drop offs underwater), and a little sleuthing can park you over top a sweet Walleye hole where you can jig for them all day and have a lot of success. and topwater fishing with plastic frogs in June is one of my all time favourite things, find some lilly pads, drag that frog from pad to pad, the Pike come from the bottom like a great white and hammers the frog!! awesome.....

I hate it here in Long Island...I love the country...I go to the Catskills also to hunt and fish but I joined a Hunting Camp so I go up to the Saranac area if I get a chance...

I always loved fishing especially fresh water because I love the mountains...The crazy thing is that I was always intriqued by fly fishing...It just has a allure to it...Anyway the ironic part is that I was in New Zealand and I fly fished for the first time...I was a rookie fly fisheerman fishing in the Super Bowl of fly fishing!!!The problem was that I wasn't good at casting...Now that I know how I wan't to back so bad...I once fished the Snake river in Wyoming but it was not a good time...The Grand Tetons were spectacular though...

No where near the size of the Fraser. A friend of mine who moved here a few years ago has moved back out there, his dad has a guiding service and I plan to go out there some time.

I guess there was a 200 lb sturgeon caught in the last few years out of the South Sask. When I was younger, 70 lb sturgeon were caught every year and not a big deal.

The sturgeon are in trouble, and are now protected.

Here is one I caught when I was 12, when the limit was 1 a day, and we ate it.

I used to fish all the time b4 I became a truck driver, now what little time I have at home is spent doing other things.
I do miss fishing tho. When I did go I liked catching Large Mouth Blackbass and during the winter months Crappie wich is the best eating of all fresh water fish IMO.

I've seen that picture quite a few times.

Makes me wonder how many fish that fight for 6 hours get released and live. I think I might have a bit of an issue with guiding services who make money targetting a rare and endangered species that is protected like that.

I dont' catch and release anything, unless it is an accidental catch. If I don't plan on eating it, i don't fish for it. The elitest attitudes so many people seem to be getting about catch and release pisses me off, general attitudes about the whole thing are fucked in my opinion.

In.

My summer palatial estate (read, cabin) is at a lake about an hour south of here. Best muskie lake in the state. I mostly fish for those and bass down there. The muskie are caught both trolling and casting. The state started stocking saugeye there several years ago and there is now a catchable population. I may have to start chasing those. I also venture out to the Lake Erie tribs and fish for steelhead.

Here's a steelhead I caught a couple years ago.

I didn't realize people stocked saugeyes, a hybrid of the sauger and walleye. I googled it, and see that a lot of places stock saugeye, and that they are not sterile and go on to breed.

I wonder why they don't just stock walleye and / or sauger? Weird.
Scales
Diefenbaker lake in Saskatchewan is known for producing some really large fish. A few years ago after a big flood, some sterile farmed rainbow trout escaped their confines and have grown huge.

A couple of brothers this year, broke the provincial record 3 times in 2 weeks. They went on to break it more times, and also by using lighter lines have smashed most of all of the line weight world records in the process.

They have more pictures, I think they caught more than 10 rainbows between the 28 lb and 35 lb mark last year. While doing so they also caught a 17 lb walleye!

I quess I always thought they were sterile. Saugeyes do occur naturally in the Ohio River, but the state raises 6-10 million a year in a hatchery. Here's one sentence from Ohio DNR as to why they stock them..

"Ohio’s saugeye program has focused on stocking saugeye where walleye introductions have been unsuccessful and where saugeye are more likely to provide a quality fishery."

From http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/saueye.htm

Quote: Although not sterile, saugeye must be stocked routinely in order to maintain fishable populations.........They are being stocked particularly in lakes with stunted crappie because once they reach 16 inches, they begin to feed on these fish, thus improving the crappie fishery.

Maybe those are some of the reasons for stocking Saugeye as apposed to Walleye.

The picture I posted above of Sauger and Walleye has a hybrid or 2 in it I beleive.

On Sunday afternoon, we went to the South Saskatchewan river near the Alberta border, before the confluence of the South Sask and Red Deer Rivers.

It was a little high and muddy, but not nearly as bad as downstream of where the Red Deer river joins.

Didnt' get to pick our favorite spot, we were just behind the first people to arrive.

In a very short time, Mom caught a Sturgeon, probably about 25 lbs I'd estimate. The guys in 'the spot' were catching a lot of walleye, one nice one around 4 lbs.

I caught a 4.5 lb walleye (a bit bigger than the other guy's :D :D :D as always, but I fuckin rule, you guys know that) and then the fishing slowed for a while, I also caught the only goldeye caught in the day.

There was also a nice little 4 lb pike caught that gave one of the young kids a lot of fun pulling it in, it ran and jumped and fought like a motherfucker.

There were 9 sturgeon caught throught the afternoon. A few really tiny and cute ones, the second largest being maybe 8 lbs or so. That was nice to see, I hope the Sturgeon population is making a come back. They were all very deep salmon colored, more so than I ever remember seeing before. I got a lot of chances to explain the coolness of these 'living dinosaurs' to the many young kids (of people I grew up with). They were all trying to find snakes for me to 'wrangle'

When the guys in the honey hole left, I moved there and caught a nice eater sized walleye on the first cast. I always find it funny how 20 feet downstream can be such a better spot than where I am sitting.

If I did, I'd have eaten them the day i caught them and not bagged them up for later. Nothing beats fresh fish!

Very nice, mom took pictures of me with some of the fish, when she gets them put on the computer I will post them unless I look too fat. This last winter was hard on me, I weigh more than I did in highschool..... (but I was wearing my bubba army T-shirt just incase I caught something cool for pictures)

the bag on the right is the male rainbow, the left are female fillets

The season up here in Saskatchewan starts on Saturday.

Damn, I did not see this thread cause I have been on the road fishing 3 bass tournaments the past two weeks in the Bubba Battleship. I hit Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas traveling to the tournaments. Pics of the battleship and other fish pics can be seen on my MySpace page ( http://www.myspace.com/sirius_rich ). You would not believe all the attention the Bubba Battleship gets on the road and on the water. Bubba and SIRIUS have a lot of fans that fish.

Scales,

The best 8 days of my life were spent on Waterbury Lake in NE Saskatchewan. We caught the hell out of Northerns, Lake Trout and Artic Grayling. Here is a pic of my son while on the trip. We were there the first week of June and could not get to the north side of the lake and the Grayling due to ice until the last 3 days of the trip and even then we had to break up the ice with oars. It was cool that if you got thirsty you could drink the lake and ice down the beer with the floating ice.

Too late for fresh fish for supper? Many a fish has been cooked while drunk at 11:00 in the evening over here, many, many a fish :D

I was actually hoping to catch some burbot to make faux-lobster with... now that I want to catch them, I never seem too

I was wondering where you were... should have guessed that.

Yeah, Saskatchewan is well known for its trophy fishing and hunting. I don't think I'd ever want to move.

I've never fished up north, but want to one of these years. Most of the resorts aren't cheap at all, and cater to the people from the U.S with lots of disposable cash.

Maybe that is where you get the name 'rich' from :)

If you ever feel like coming up for a week for some good fishing and unique experiences, I'd be happy to put you up in a nice motel here in town for free, and guide you around to some great spots.

I'm on a few fishing forums up here, and am learning the right places to go to catch a lot of fish with chances of a few big ones...

This was on the ice, but 2 months ago, a guy I know caught his limit (5) of pike, 16-37 lbs

My God, I just may take you up on that offer. I love going to the Great White North and would like to visit Saskatoon again. I think it has been long enough and no one will remember me from the last trip. :D
