| Ive recently gotten out of the Navy after 13 years of service. I didnt quite realize just how difficult the job market is. Unfortunately, I was trained in a career in the Navy that doesnt translate well into a civilian occupation. (and I served all of my adult life.) My question is, does anyone know of any websites that may cater to veterans in helping with job searching, and possible employment? I wasnt sure where else to ask, and figured that Bubba has bigger fan base with vets. |

I would like to ask you, however, why you only had seven years to go and you got out of the military. You were two thirds of the way to easy money. Just askin'. |

| 13 years and 7 deployments = Ive missed my kids growing up. My oldest sons birth, first steps, first day of kindergarten, etc. You dont get that back, once it happens. Now they are sending the Navy on the ground in Iraq. Im proud of those men and women over there fighting, but after a friend of mine in the Marines was killed and I saw his kids at the funeral without a dad, I couldnt do it. People dont know very much about the Navy being sent to fight the ground war, but its true. Just google "Individual Augmentee". Its getting ugly. |

You could try the postal service. People talk shit but it's not a bad place to work at all. I would go to www.usps.com/empoyment BUT also call your local post office and talk to the postmaster. Tell him/her that you are a vet and are interested. The USPS loves vets because we know a little bit about structure and organization, and it just has that FEEL of being government work that military people are used to.
Also, your veteran status will get you benefits that other folks don't get, or don't get right away. |

Actually, its the Navy and the Airforce. Recruiting was hurting so badly for the Army and Marines, the they had to pull from the other services. I guess that kids started to realize that the GI Bill isnt exactly free. They started to see their friends come home with missing limbs, and thought twice about serving themselves. For every service member that is killed in Iraq, there are seven coming home with a body part left behind. |

donnyd. What a lot of employers don't realize is that former military are often the BEST workers they will ever have, regardless of their skills(I was infantry for 3 years, got out got a little school, and am going back in for a cushier job this time :D ). A friend of mine was in for over 20 years, in a trade much like yours, that didn't translate well. He wanted to be a cabinetmaker, so took a class at a local technical school, and applied at a company for an entry level position. Within 3 months, he was the supervisor of a 10 man team, and sat in regularly on strategy meetings, helping to guide the company. His boss told me he was like the sparkplug in the engine of the company, and helped that company prosper beyond imagination. Within 9 months, he was getting insane offers from competing companies that he couldn't refuse. he still has a great relationship with that first company, and the guy who hired him said that he specifically recruits former military now, just because of that experience. He's never been disappointed. Ex-military are hard workers and are always on time, which is worth a shitload in the workplace.
Just a little story to let you know that there's hope, you just need to impress upon your prospective employers these things, and you'll find someone who'll want to take the "risk" on you in no time. Show them who you are and what you can do for them, and you're golden.
Keep your head up. |

| Right now Ive been trying to get an apprenticeship. That way I can start receiving the GI Bill. The Carpenters Union local 547 has me on their out of work list, so I have my fingers crossed there. It sucks because Im currently a night janitor at UC San Diego, which Im not proud of. I just refuse to be one of those bums that stand in front of 7/11 begging for change. |

| Don't be ashamed of any job you have. We all have had those "survival" jobs, to get us on our feet so we can get that job we really want. As long as you're working hard and are heading in the right direction, don't worry brother. |

| Wow. D75, you are the kind of people that make this country great.  :bannana2: :2thumbs: :worship: I gotta ask, as an ex-military person like yourself, what do think of Bush's policy in the Middle East? |

| Just a suggestion become a paramedic. That is what I do. You have to become an EMT first that usually only takes 1 semester of school. After that you can enter a paramedic program which is 1-2 years depending on where you live and that states requirements. The good thing is while you go to school to be a madic you work as an emt and get experience. I also served in the military (USMC infantry) talk about a job that doesn't transfer into the civilian world. Paramedics can earn 40 to 60 thousand if you get a job with a municipality. However the pay is slightly less if you work for a private service. It is a job that welcomes veterans like us and with the leadership skills you have learned in the military we could use alot of people like you in our ranks. Also if you do get a job with a city, they normally have an age requirement (not sure how old you are) but you can deduct your years of service off of your age. It is a rewarding job that has many benifits professional and personal. Plus a city pension aint but come retirement. Hope I was able to help atleast a little |

| Im a former Republican, former. We are over there trying to change something that hasnt been changed in over 1000 years. A lot of people are judging our kids serving there by some of the things they have done. Some of them are serving hard time because they may have taken their anger too far on some of the civilians. I say, unless you have stood in their shoes, shut the fuck up! They keep telling us that we have to finish what we have started, or else those who have fought and died, have died in vain. If they really want to respect the fallen, then bring them home so no more have to die. |

| In this market, any job is a good one. It takes a little while to translate back into civilian life but you will get there. Use all your resources too there are thousands online that help with finding vacancies and interview and resume prep without burinign gas at 3.04/Gal. As one vet to another, thank you for your service and best of luck in the search. The Tampa area seems to always have plenty of jobs. Maybe try there, or almost anywhere along the eastern seaboard. If nothing else, there's always Alaskan Crab Fishing. |

| It's not what you know it's who you know. One of my best friends is a jar head here in Canada and he has done very well in the security business wortking himself up the ladder. It is about networking, you have to get out socializing with your contacts in the military and make new contacts. These contacts will eventually lead you to a new job. The military is huge in the U.S., you just have to get to know the right people. Posting this thread is actually a good start. |

Sheet, i know it's kinda a given that anyone can drive a truck, but there are local jobs to be had across America, and that will help with being home too.
I would try out the EMT / Paramedic route if i had to do it over. This O/ O stuff is for the birds. |

| Thanks for your help. There is a lot of info on usajobs.com. Helmetstohardhats.org has lots of info as well. My dad told me something funny, thats seems true as well. He said, "Looking for a job is a lot like finding pussy. When you have none, it can be tough to get some. And when you find some, others come out of the woodwork looking for you." |

| I'd say go to school and use the G.I. Bill. I had the G.I. Bill and the Navy College Fund, and when I graduated in '03 I was getting almost $1400 just to go to school. I'm sure they're giving out closer to $2000 now. I'd go to school and get a part time job. |
