It doesn’t take Alex Rodriguez long to make enemies.
The New York Yankees infielder drew the ire of rookie Dustin Pedroia in the eighth inning of the Red Sox 7-3 win last night at Yankee Stadium by throwing an elbow at him as he slid into second base.
With one out in the eighth and the bases loaded, Jorge Posada hit a ground ball to third baseman BMike Lowell, who fielded the ball and fired to Pedroia for the force on A-Rod at second base. Pedroia came across the bag and threw to first base, just barely missing pulling off the double play, and was stunned when Rodriguez slid on the infield side of the base and threw his left elbow into his left side as he popped out of the slide.
“He went in late and kind of threw an elbow,” Pedroia said. “It was a little cheap but no big deal. I’ll remember. I play second base. I’ve got to turn two with the Yankees 19 times a year, so I know now when he’s coming in, my (arm) slot gets dropped to the floor. That’s it.”
Pedroia went to the clubhouse to view the slide after his at-bat in the top of the ninth and had his initial impression of the slide confirmed. When he returned to the field for the bottom of the ninth, he complained to second base umpire Joe West.
“I went back out and I said, ‘Hey, you should look at that; it’s a double play if he does that,’ ” Pedroia said. “I haven’t played football in years. That was all right.”
Despite his anger at Rodriguez, Pedroia was understanding of the hard play.
“He probably got carried away but it happens,” he said. “He was trying to help his team win. I’m just trying to turn a double play. I’ll get killed if I have to. I’m just trying to get that out.”
Rodriguez was unavailable for comment. |

By the way, at least Ruiz is somewhere in the proximity of second base when he threw his arm up. Still, a cheap play by Ruiz, though not as bad as Slappy's. |

I'm a Red Sox fan and I have to agree his bitch status can and will only be revoked if he plays for the Sox. Although I will say if a guy slides hard like that into second and he's on your team, well great play and nice hustle, if he's on the other team it's a dirty play. I'm just hoping to see Arod at first when another double play ball gets hit to the left side of the infield tonight to see how Pedroia handles his throw. |

Tradition is very important in baseball. 10-20-30-40 years ago A-Rod would have been hit. If the Jeter gets it, then Tek should too. That is baseball. |

I would consider a dirty play as someone who went into the bag with maliciousness and trying to hurt somene. He in no way did that. I would also consider dirty as something outside the rules of the game. |

“I know we [saw] Alex Rodriguez coming out [of] the [batting] cage [on Wednesday night] and, you know, he kind of apologized to ‘Pedey’ for it,” said Crisp.
“Sometimes things happen in the course of the game … [and afterwards] you’re like, ‘Dang, why the heck did I do that? That was stupid.’ And I’m sure that he understood that, because he’s been in the game a long time, you know, longer than me and ‘Pedey’ put together.
