Harry Reid Calls Military Commanders Incompetent

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid showed his support for the American military by calling two of its top leaders "incompetent". Pandering to liberal bloggers, Reid made the comments in explaining his strategy to make Republican Senators sick of voting on the Iraq war and bludgeoning them into declaring defeat:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, "incompetent" during an interview Tuesday with a group of liberal bloggers, a comment that was never reported.
Reid made similar disparaging remarks about Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said several sources familiar with the interview.

This is but the latest example of how Reid, under pressure from liberal activists to do more to stop the war, is going on the attack against President Bush and his military leaders in anticipation of a September showdown to end U.S. involvement in Iraq, according to Democratic senators and aides.

Reid, who was bashed by Republicans for suggesting earlier this year that the Iraq war was "lost," is lashing out at top commanders while putting the finishing touches on a plan to force a series of votes on Iraq designed exclusively to make Republicans up for reelection in 2008 go on record in favor of continuing an unpopular war.

So Harry Reid, the man who couldn't get a supplemental spending bill completed in less than 108 days, is calling Pace and Petraeus incompetent.

That's the same Harry Reid who couldn't get the Democrats' "100 Hours" pledges to fruition in over 120 days and counting. In fact, this is the same Majority Leader that has led the least-accomplished session of Congress in a generation.

And just for the record, it's the same Harry Reid who insisted that he would never bring back the immigration bill if it failed its cloture test -- and then tried for a second cloture, declaring that also a "final" action -- and lost again.

That's the man calling Pace and Petraeus incompetent.

Got it.

I almost forgot -- the same Harry Reid who voted to confirm Petraeus in January!

There's been a violent tempest in the D.C. teapot these last couple of days over a story in The Politico claiming Harry Reid called Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Peter Pace "incompetent" to a bunch of bloggers. That's supposed to be a terrible, terrible sin, as if we had a government governed by deference to the military, instead of the other way around. But at any rate, there's been much furrow-browed disquisition over whether Reid said such a thing in the first place.

I think the excellent Greg Sargent of the TPM empire is wrong here. He says this transcript suggests that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid did indeed call the general "incompetent," if in passing, and in a context utterly garbled by The Politico:

Well, I guess the President, he's gotten rid of Pace because he could not get confirmed here in the Senate. Pace is also a yes-man for the President. I told him to his face, I laid it out last time he came in to see me. I told him what an incompetent man I thought he was. But he got rid of his Joint Chiefs of Staff chair, but he still hangs on to this failed Attorney General. And I guess he's gonna [inaudible]. We're gonna keep focusing on it. Every day that goes by, it seems he keeps giving. Now we've learned that the immigration judges are all graduates of Regent University I guess.

But note the antecedent that opens the statement: "the President." I suspect he, not Peter Pace, is the person being spoken to "to his face." I could be wrong; do presidents "come in to see" senators? But in every other "he" or "him" the reference is ambiguously to Bush.

Harry Reid's a tough guy—a boxer, a man who beat up someone who tried to bribe him. If he did tell the president to his face that he was incompetent, wouldn't that be...cool?

Was that before or after he declared the war lost, and then the surge a failure??? Seems to me he has made a judgement already......

Or will he support the surge, after he was against it?? :burst:

Harry Reid is a disgrace. A complete disgrace made worse by the fact that he is the leader of a House of Congress. Here is an article where, well, it speaks for itself...

Iraq war is 'lost': US Democrat leader

Apr 19 02:45 PM US/Eastern

The war in Iraq "is lost" and a US troop surge is failing to bring peace to the country, the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Congress, Harry Reid, said Thursday.

"I believe ... that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week," Reid told journalists.

Reid said he had delivered the same message to US President George W. Bush on Wednesday, when the US president met with senior lawmakers to discuss how to end a standoff over an emergency war funding bill.

"I know I was the odd guy out at the White House, but I told him at least what he needed to hear ... I believe the war at this stage can only be won diplomatically, politically and economically."

Congress is seeking to tie funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a timetable to withdraw US troops from Iraq next year, but Bush has vowed to veto any such bill and no breakthrough was reported from the White House talks.

Bush on Thursday was addressing an Ohio town hall meeting and defending the war on terror launched in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

"It is the most solemn duty of our country, is to protect our country from harm," Bush told the invited audience in Tipp, Ohio.

"A lesson learned was that -- at least in my opinion -- that in order to protect us, we must aggressively pursue the enemy and defeat them elsewhere so that we do not have to face them here."

But Reid drew a parallel with former US president Lyndon Johnson who decided to deploy more troops in Vietnam some 40 years ago when 24,000 US troops had already been killed.

"Johnson did not want a war loss on his watch, so he surged in Vietnam. After the surge was over, we added 34,000 to the 24,000 who died in Vietnam," Reid said.

The comments came a day after bombers killed more than 200 people in a slew of car bombings in Baghdad, dealing a savage blow to the US security plan which aims to deploy an extra 30,000 troops in the country to quell sectarian unrest.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates fly into Iraq Thursday on an unannounced visit for talks with top US military commanders there.

He met with General David Petraeus, chief of coalition forces in Iraq, his deputy Lieutenant Colonel Ray Odierno and Admiral William Fallon, chief of US forces in the Middle East.

I agree that your words are Harry's only real defense. You have done well. Or, at least as best you could and as best he can expect from his followers.

Thats funny cause the last brigade ws just put in place this week, so the full surge is just starting. Looks like someone is prejudging the outcome based on his anti Americanism....how surprising...

THe surge has never been attempted in this manner, with this commander before in Iraq. SOrry, your lie is meaningless.

Speaking of failure, why are you hoping for it so much for America in Iraq???
