WWE® Shocked At Latest Developments In Benoit Tragedy, Concerned By Sensationalistic Reporting

STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.
However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:
1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.
2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.
3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.
4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.
5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.
WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities. |

Interesting to see that Chris Benoit's profile on ECW's page has already been removed. During Eddie Guerrero's death, his profile remained on Smackdown for several months after his death. Seems like the WWE is trying to distance themselves from Chris.
WWEShop.com has removed all traces of Chris Benoit from the site. Chris Benoit's name has been removed from the Superstars section, as well as all his merchandise. The WrestleMania 23 DVD no longer lists his match against MVP in the match listing and the description for a plaque autographed by all of the winners at WrestleMania no longer lists his name. Furthermore, a search for "Benoit" or "Chris Benoit" leads to a blank page with the words: Search results for "discontinued". |

Written: June 26, 2007
On Saturday, June 23, Chris Benoit was slated to appear at a WWE live event in Beaumont, Texas. That afternoon, Benoit contacted WWE to inform them that his wife and child were ill, and that he would not be able to attend the show.
WWE executives rebooked Benoit’s flight for the following morning, allowing Benoit to miss the Beaumont event making alternate arrangements for him to attend the pay-per-view event in Houston on Sunday.
WWE employees attempted to confirm with Benoit his travel plans but were unable to contact him.
Early Sunday morning, between 3:51 and 3:58 a.m., Benoit sent five text messages to co-workers:

“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”
Text Message 2 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53 a.m.) - Chris Benoit’s cell phone
“The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open”
Text Message 3 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:54 a.m.) - Nancy Benoit’s cell phone
“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane.

Text Message 4 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:55 a.m.) - Nancy Benoit’s cell phone

Throughout the day on Sunday, WWE made numerous attempts to contact Benoit both at home and at local hospitals in the Atlanta area. As of 11 p.m., WWE officials were unable to establish contact with Chris Benoit.
At 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 25, WWE officials were notified of the text messages sent to the co-workers the previous day. By 12:45 p.m., WWE had contacted Fayette County Sheriff’s office requesting they check on the Benoit family.
Fayette County Sheriff's office made contact with WWE at approximately 4 p.m. advising that they had entered the house of Chris Benoit and found three deceased bodies – an adult male, adult female and a male child. WWE was told that Benoit’s home was now considered a major crime scene.
The decision to cancel the live event scheduled in Corpus Christi that night was made between 4 and 5 p.m. In keeping with company policy, and with limited knowledge regarding facts of the case, WWE chose to air a memorial dedicated to the career of Chris Benoit. As facts emerged surrounding the case, all tributes to Chris Benoit were removed both on-air and on WWE.com.

Pro Wrestling Wife Claims Drug Abuse, Domestic Violence 'Out of Hand in the WWE'
The former wife of pro wrestling superstar "Stone Cold" Steve Austin broke what had been a court-imposed silence and charged that "domestic and drug abuse is out of hand in the WWE and something needs to be done about it."
Debra Williams' stunning charge, reported Wednesday by MyFoxColorado.com, comes in the wake of the grisly discovery of the bodies of Chris Benoit and his wife, Nancy-Daus Benoit, and 7-year-old son, Daniel.

Police in Fayetteville, Ga., say Benoit strangled his wife Friday, then suffocated his son on Saturday before hanging himself on Sunday. Their bodies were discovered Monday morning after Benoit canceled pay-per-view and personal appearances that weekend in Texas.
Investigators said anabolic steroids and other drugs were found in the Benoit house.
Williams, meanwhile, is one of the more visible wrestling wives and had been scripted into many televised bouts and appearances. She was married to Steve McMichaels, a former Chicago Bears football player, when she first began working with the Atlanta-based World Championship Wrestling organization. When that group was acquired by WWF — now WWE — she divorced McMichaels and married Austin.
Williams told MyFoxColorado.com that Nancy-Daus Benoit's history of domestic violence and being married to a steroid user was similar to her own.
Both sought help from law enforcement because of domestic abuse, she said.
In 2003, Benoit sought a divorce from Chris Benoit saying he physically abused her, and asked the courts for a restraining order. Williams did the same thing on the third occasion when she says she was attacked by "Stone Cold."
"He did them, I saw him do them!" Williams said about her ex-husband's use of steroids.
Williams says, like Benoit, Austin all but forced her to write a letter to authorities saying her complaint was a mistake. But in Williams’ case, the courts put Austin on probation for a year. In return, Williams says she was placed under a gag order, forcing her to remain silent about the "dark side" of professional wrestling, filled with drugs, booze and domestic abuse.
"If only I had spoken up sooner, maybe Nancy and her little boy would be alive today. ... That's why I'm going public now, something has to change!"

Debra Williams, the ex wife of Stone Cold Steve Austin, was interviewed by www.myfoxcolorado.com regarding the Benoit Family tragedy and says if she had spoken out sooner about the abuse she alleges she suffered at the hands of Austin she may have been able to save Nancy and Daniel Benoit.
Williams says in the interview that Austin used steroids during their marriage and says, "He did them, I say him do them!". She lashed out at WWE and said, "The domestic and drug abuse is out of hand in the WWE and something needs to be done about it."
Williams says a gag order she signed as part of a settlement with Austin prevented her from speaking up earlier and says, "If only I had spoken up sooner, maybe Nancy and her little boy would be alive today... that's why I'm going public now, something has to change!"

WWE.com is quickly moving to purge mentions of Chris Benoit from the website and has taken down Benoit merchandise from their merchandise area. Several links to video and photos that had been on the WWE.com main page have now been removed and replaced with traditional updates about other WWE wrestlers.
Two metions reamin of the tragedy. One is a link to comments from Carl DeMarco and the other is a story posted under a photo that updates the situation and confirms that authorities are proceeding with the assumption that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide.
Mike Johnson at PWInsider.com reports that WWE has gone so far as to change the description of the dvd for Wrestlemania XX to show the main event as being Triple H vs Shawn Michaels. |

TMZ.com is reporting more details on the Benoit Family tragedy. According to a TMZ source, Benoit was texting friends during the Vengeance pay-per-view and may have watched the event with his son who may have still been alive at the time.
TMZ says law enforcement sources tell them that Benoit is believed to have strangeled Nancy on Saturday, then smothered his son in bed sometime on Sunday before hanging himself in the weight room of their home on Monday. |

Nancy Benoit filed for divorce in May 2003 and claimed domestic abuse in her court filings. A petition seeking protection from domestic abuse said she was intimidated by threats of violence from her husband Chris Benoit.
A restraining order was issued on May 12, 2003 against Chris Benoit that barred him from the couple's then residence in Peachtree City. On August 19, 2003, Nancy Benoit filed to dismiss the divoce petition as well as the protective restraining order.
Friends close to the couple tell us that they had a very rocky relationship and would often have "blowups" that would lead to Chris Benoit leaving for a day or so to "cool off".

Authorities conducted a press conference this afternoon regarding the deaths of Chris, Nancy, and Daniel Benoit. Here are highlights from the press conference:
# Authorities have ruled the deaths were a result of a murder suicide.
# No suicide note was found
# Test results indicate that Chris Benoit killed his wife Nancy "sometime on Friday" and his son Daniel "sometime on Saturday". Test results show that Chris Benoit killed himself sometime "later on Saturday".
# A bible was found placed next to the bodies of Nancy and Daniel.
# Nancy was found in a family room upstairs. Daniel was found in his bed.
# Chris was found hanging in the weight room in the basement.
# Authorities found "a lot" of prescription drugs at the scene, including anabolic steroids.
# Authorities are aware of only one prior arrest for Chris Benoit, for DUI.
# Scott Ballard, the District Attorney handling the case, said he termed the killings "bizarre" because of the timing of the deaths and that he remained in the house for some period of time after killing Nancy and Daniel.
# Ballard said, "I'm baffled why anybody would kill a 7 year old baby.
# Nancy was bound on her feet and wrists and wrapped in a towel.
# Text messages received by friends were received several hours after they were sent, perhaps explaining reports that messages were sent during the day on Sunday. |

In speaking with close friends and confidants of Chris Benoit contacted this afternoon, apparently there were some warning signs that something was wrong with Benoit.
Some of the information learned by 1Wrestling.com by colleagues and friends that did not want to be quoted:
"This wasn't roid rage, this was insanity. Roid rage doesn't last for 48 hours. There were signs that something was wrong. Stories have emerged that a year ago he became paranoid and believed he was being followed. He wouldn't let Nancy leave the house because he believed someone was out to get them."
“Chris hated religion. He didn't believe in it. I cannot comprehend him putting bibles by the bodies. I am shocked.” (Note: We have been contacted by other friends of Benoit who say he had recently become a religious person)
In addition, 1Wrestling has learned that sources close to Nancy are reporting that she had a safety deposit box with evidence of past rages and that authorities should check the box if anything ever happened to her. |

The WWE is right. The mainstream media IS sensationalizing the Benoit story. I can't imagine CNN would run a headline like "Steroids found at wrestler's house of death" if the story involved a baseball player. That type of headline is beneath CNN and puts them at the National Enquirer level of journalism. Still, it's better than a headline currently running on TMZ.com - "World Wrestling DEADeration".

Published reports indicate that Chris Benoit was apparently a customer of MedXLife, a company under investigation for illegally distributing steroids, as recently as last year.
Investigators said at a Tuesday press conference that they had found anabolic steroids at the Benoit home. Toxicology test will not be available for a few weeks. |
