No, the mission has not changed - the Liberals were the ones (notably Charlie Rose on the Liberal PBS) the concept of "zero violence." The President was merely noting that "zero violence" is unachievable, just as it is in any country. What he did say needed to be stopped were the spectacular attacks that Al Qaeda have been doing - this is why the surge has pushed into Diyala Province (because it has been the staging area for these attacks in Baghdad). Beyond that, democracy is still the goal (the government in Iraq is hammering out the oil revenue sharing legislation right now) as well as a society that can sustain and defend itself.
The President has also noted that Israel suffers from suicide bombers and such, but isn't considered a "failure." Again, the goal cannot be zero violence because it's almost impossible to stop a terrorist from strapping an explosives vest on and running into a market area.
The President is correct in his assessment, as it is both practical and achievable. The flipside is Liberals who point to every bombing and claim that the surge has "failed." You watch what the Democrats do in the next few weeks - declare the surge a failure before General Petraeus is given the chance to issue his report. |
