Ah... missed this thread last night. A bar here in the neighborhood had the UFC event playing without a cover. So drank beer and munched out all night... Pretty good fights, but surprised by a couple things:

* WTF was Herring thinking? Dude had Nog out and should have pressured him through the 2nd round. Idiotic. Got to admit though, Herring is a tough bastard.

* Tito looked bland. I was also disappointed by his fence holding to prevent the takedown. What's his next fight? I don't think he would have a chance against Jackson. So where does that leave him? The light heavyweight division has passed him by.

* Shirk's near 0 abilities at submissions. Good god with that kind of body control he should have been able to catch Hermes in an arm bar from side control. And what's up with that knee to the head? That shit hurt me from 1,000 miles away... COX-2 inhibitors methinks.

* Silva is stud. No surprises there.. Does Rich Franklin really want to fight him again after the facial reconstruction? Nate is better on the ground than Rich ever was (and still got owned). And Rich on his feet is no match for Silva (as we saw). Last night showed it's over for you in the UFC Rich. Go try Extreme Cage Fighting or some 2nd tier MMA league looking for rep'd fighters.

Overall, a good MMA fix. Now the wait is on for #74!

I missed the fight, I didn't have sopcast downloaded on the puter, had too many beers to set it up last night , didn't even try....I'll be ready next time

I was honestly suprised the ref did not stop the Nog fight when he was down. If you compare that to the Marqhardt fight, they stopped that almost immediately.... I hate Herring, but he really drilled him with that kick.

I think Franklin is a smart enough guy to know he will have to change things up when he fights Silva again. I thought he showed alot of toughness in the first fight, even with the beating he took. If he can find a way to push Silva up against the cage he might have a chance.

Sherk has the potential to be one of the baddest mofos in MMA if he can add some real submissions to his smothering technique.

I agree. He has some skills and always has exciting fights. He seems to have trouble with the Sherk musclehead types, but then who doesn't?

...he probably gets flashbacks to jr high, getting stuffed in lockers by the older jocks, etc., and freezes up...he still looks like a "98 lb weakling", poor guy...

Sherk is a little MANimal tho.....!

Why would the ref stop the fight? He was just dazed and laying on the ground, IIRC. Herring was just standing around motioning him to get back up. Maybe if Herring actually tried to capitolize and pound him out at that point, the ref would've had a reason to stop it.

Herring isnt UFC-calibre anymore. He should take it to Bodog or Strikeforce at this point.

Dude is a fucking maniac. It looked for sure he was gonna tap early in that first round. Hermes had him a deep guillotine, choking the shit out him, but the crazy bastard powered his way out of it. He also took several hard knees to the head, at least one in every round but he just never stopped coming.

I would like to see him fight Gomi, but honestly I dont think it would go much differently. Maybe BJ Penn? Cant think of anyone else at this point who'd give him a run.
Reverend Tyler
It was announced at the press conference that Sherk is facing BJ Penn in November. I think Penn will dominate Sherk much like GSP did. Sherk is a fantastic wrestler but he wont be able to manhandle Penn that way...hell be lucky if he can take him down.

As for Nog not getting stopped...at first Herring pounced on him but was punching him, but you can see Nog look at the referee and raise his hand to show he was allright...Nog can take a tremendous amount of punishment...If you didnt know where the scar on his back came from, it was from getting run over by a fucking truck when he was like 11. Afterwards he got up to do some jumping jacks*

*Ok not really, he was in a coma for a week and the hospital for 11 months and they didnt think hed be able to walk again, but STILL!

So BJ is gonna stick around at 155 after all. Interesting. I dunno, man. Sherk is a heavily motivated, highly determined fighter. Not to mention he has a seriously strong chin judging by all those knees he was able to take last night. Should be interesting.

Is that right? Wow. My girlfriend was wondering about that last night. I just figured he got stabbed or something. Good to know.
Reverend Tyler
I dont think Sherk has any possible chance of stopping BJ...Remember how much trouble Matt Hughes had taking down BJ? Well Matt Hughes dominated Sherk for 5 rounds. BJ is going to be way too good on his feet and way too good on the ground for Sherk. Sherk is a good fighter, but hes not nearly as good as Matt Hughes, who BJ has dominated twice....Yes I know Hughes whethered the storm and beat BJ, but that was because late in the 2nd round one of BJ's ribs separated from his sternum, obviously leaving him with no energy whatsoever in the 3rd when Hughes finally took control.
Ass Boil
I agree as long as the BJ we saw 2 weeks ago shows up. He looked so sharp, I don't see any way Sherk could beat Penn if he fights like that.
Reverend Tyler
Yeah...at 155 though I think Penn is pretty unstoppable. He absolutely dominated Takanori Gomi as well who is generally regarded as the world's top lightweight.

BTW, did you see Mach Sakurai there last night? Hes pretty much regarded #2, so a matchup with Penn could be very likely...
