Tonight is UFC 73 - which is the best card the UFC has set up in quite a while..the fights and my predictions -
Mark Bocek vs. Frank Edgar -
Bocek is a fighter who used to train with GSP and has been getting ready for this fight with the Jackson Camp in New Mexico...other than that, I dont know much about him. Frankie Edgar was fucking awesome in his UFC debut against Tyson Griffin and should major toughness when he didnt tap to a very tight kneebar for over a minute at the end of the fight, which he won by decision. Hes undefeated after 6 fights. In one of his fights he had a piece of his cauliflower ear kicked off...he still finished and one the fight...In another fight he broke the orbital bone on his face - and still won the fight, not even realizing there was a problem until the next day, when he was blowing his nose and the air escaped through the bone causing a big pocket of air in his face making him resemble the elephant man. So yeah, hes fucking tough.
I think he takes it by decision. Either way, I hope this is a fight that gets aired after the main event (hoping it doesnt go all 5 rounds)
Jason Gilliam vs. Chris Lytle
Lytle is another tough bastard. If you havent seen his fight with Robbie Lawler do yoursel a favor. What a war that was. His record aint great, but I think he takes it over Gilliam, who took this fight on short notice.

Diego Saraiva vs. Jorge Gurgel
Gurgel is another great fighter, but has had a lot of bad luck with injuries, specifically his knees. He trains Rich Franklin so he has a lot of good guys around him. I dont know much about Saraiva, but they are similar style fighters. I think Gurgel by armbar in the 2nd
Mike Nickels vs. Stephan Bonnar
This is the 2nd dark match Im hoping gets shown. Nickels didnt impress me at all on TUF3, and I dont think we've seen what Bonnar can really do yet. Weve mostly seen him stand up and brawl, but he is a Purple Belt from Carlson Gracie and also trains with Andre Arlovski. Hes had a lot of time to nurse his injuries due to his suspension for steroids, so it will be interesting to see how he bounces back. I think TKO in the 1st
Alvin Robinson vs. Kenny Florian
I saw a highlight reel of Robinson and he does look tough, but he is a ground fighter mostly, and that will be playing into Florian's hands. Florian looked grea last fight against Mishima so I think he will continue that on as well. I wouldnt be surprised to see Robinson make it a great fight, but I think Florian takes it.
TKO (Doctor stoppage due to cut) in the 3rd
Heath Herring vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Heath Herring is a great fighter, but most people who only see the UFC only know him from his incredibly boring, lackluster performance against Jake O'Brien. He has two previous fights against NOgueira, and while both were losses, both were incredible fights. Look for him to again be a great match against Nogueira, but ultimately get submitted by a really slick sub from Nog.

Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz
Could go either way, but Rashad has been improving each fight, whereas Tito hasnt looked very good lately. Ive been torn on this match, but as of now Im gonna take Rashad by Unanimous Decision as I think hes going to be too strong for Tito on the ground and too fast on his feet.
Hermes Franca vs. Sean Sherk
Another fight that I could see going either way. On his feet - Hermes has the huge advantage...submissions - Hermes...but Sherk is a great wrestler with very good ground and pound...while Franca will have a very active guard, will he be able to pull off a good attempt on Sherk? I think Sherk takes it by GNP in the 4th.
Nate Marquardt vs Anderson Silva
Now this match worries me a bit...Marquart is a very controlling fighter - in other words - he can be very boring. Silva, on the other hand, is the opposite of boring. Marquardt certainly has the tools to defeat Silva, but I think he will need to be nearly perfect the entire fight. I think Marquardt takes the first 2 rounds, and then hell get caught with a high kik in the 3rd that will then allow Silva to take it by KO

not to mention that BJ's takedown defense is amazing...Matt Hughes couldnt take him down, and he took Sherk down easily.
Even Randy Couture said he trained with BJ with BJ at 155 and he had trouble taking him down at 220...and even when he got him down he couldn't keep him down...No way he will dominate position against BJ like he did on Franca |
