Let me ask the obvious question....

What are the chances that this was done on purpose? That whole scene looks too familiar, and if we imagine for a second that we are being played and manipulated into being fearful that this would be a good way to subliminally remind us of the constant DANGER we are all in.

Unfortunately, although I'm sure this is not the case, it is the lengths of analysis that we are forced to go through when we live under such an evil regime.

I guess that is one of the many fundamental differences between you and I. I feel that those that are in control of this country can do far more damage to it than those that are outside and are insignificant in the big picture.

nay, there have been lots of these type of situations/accidents long before 9-11

I refuse to be intimidated by criminals - both outside AND inside the white house

NYC's infrastructure is always breaking down, and being rebuilt. To a degree we've become 911 conspiracy crazy. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Many big cities and Universities use steam for heating and cooling and driving generators or turbines. Older cities are more likely to have them as the infrastructure was there from the old days when that was the main source of heat for buildings.

The steam pipes are under the control of ConEdison, which is now a deregulated utility. Steam bursts happened before when they were regulated, and this one happened while the utility was deregulated. I hope to start another left vs. right argument with that.

Old things break and it costs money to fix them. Preventative maintanence costs more up front but usually saves money in the end. It's a constant fight for the right balance that goes on in the management of any company of any size the world over.

FWIW, although terrorism isn't apparently the cause of this accident at all, it is very easy to cause these types of events. Because the terrorists haven't been able to pull much of this stuff off, leads me to believe they really don't have many cells in this country or they aren't very smart, or both. Or theory #3: they are so patient, they are willing to sit and wait to hit every 8 years.

I know 9/11 was very well planned and executed, but it was due to a lot of buffoonery that we didn't catch it in time, red flags were popping up everywhere. Knock on wood, I think they blew their load on that one and had nothing coming down the pike.

Lots of people ask this question and it has been answered competently in this thread.

If it helps any, steam is sold as a ultility, just like electricity and gas.

It does seem a bit antiquated and when shit goes wrong with steam, it goes wrong in a big way. I've seen manhole covers fly 30 feet into the air like a giant frisbee.

We know the following....

1) The Bush Administration is evil
2) The best way to influence people is through fear
3) Many Americans associate terror/tragedy with 9/11
4) The government has unlimited resources and unlimited money

Therefore....

If they wanted to, the government COULD do anything they want. I may overestimate the competency of the government, but I think that you grossly underestimate the power of the government and the motives of evil men.

Once again, I'm not saying that any of this is the case in this matter, but it is something that one should always be congniscent of.

*edit* By the way, I am no more stupid to immediately wonder if this was staged to purport fear than the people who immediately think it is a terrorist attack.
