youre right and wrong on both.. the nhl has revenue sharing, but not to the same extent as the nfl. and they do pay nbc for broadcasts, but versus, sportsnet, tsn, cbc, fsn, and whoever else carries nhl has to pay. |

I know the ratings blow in the U.S -- but I have never seen anything where they pay NBC ........
The had a 60 mil deal with ESPN until last year and now are on Comcast ( I know - lol ).
I couldnt find the price NBC pays but these are the Comcast details.
I could be wrong, but that would be a first ( lol )

I don't know the facts but it wouldn't surprise me if they pay NBC.
Either way as far as sports and Brent goes, just listen to 'Baffled Me With Bullshit' WASHINGTON D.C. IS A STATE |

The main point is the NHL may be the most mismanaged sport in history. In most parts of the U.S. they are on a par with arena football. Their TV contract is an embarassment. Bettman failed to deliver on all his promises which is why he had to deliver the salary cap, if he didn't he would have been fired. Even the salary cap isn't working. It's a shame because it is a great sport poorly run by a cabal of dumb owners from the U.S. They have this eight voting block and seniority that has allowed them to run roughshod over the sensible owners.
Brent is right, the league is a joke. If you really want to hear someone who knows his sports shit including hockey...sha sha sha shake it uuuuuuup. |

You're both technically wrong about the NHL paying NBC to air it's games. Why it seems as though they do is because NBC paid zero to gain the rights to show the games and because the deal is revenue sharing. NBC takes the first chunk of income from advertising to cover production expenses, the NHL takes the next chunk and the two split additional revenue equally. So the NHL technically does not PAY NBC to air their games, but they also don't charge them anything either.
And of course the NFL's revenue sharing is to a further extent than the NHL. 2/3 of their money comes from huge TV deals which the NHL does not have. The reason that smaller franchises can thrive in the NFL is because of the size of that TV money compared to ticket sales and the salary cap. Even if you don't have a huge population you can fund your team with Fox and CBS's money. The major difference is that NFL teams split the money at the gate between home and away (which would be pretty much impossible in the NHL considering cities like Atlanta and Phoenix and their attendance). However, the NFL doesn't share it's product sales or box seats which I'm fairly sure the NHL does. |

Unless your name is Scott Ferrall you shouldn't talk about hockey...Actually, in my opinion, hockey is a joke. I'd rather put my TV to a channel with the black & white dots on the screen and stare at that for 2 hours then watch a hockey game...
The college I went to had a hockey program and the hockey players walked around all bad a$$ hyping that they were "Division I hockey players"....How many DI hockey programs are there, like 30? I'm not Brent Hatley smart but I believe all of the best hockey players play in some Junior league or come from overseas...
can't stand the sport or the long hair bearded toothless Gordie Howe offspring who play it...Take that sh!t back to Canada

To each his own I guess. If you replaced NHL with Nascar, Gordie Howe with Earnhardt and Canada to the south in your post I'd completely agree. I mean atleast hockey requires athletic ability to play. |

revenue sharing is dependant on how close to the cap a team spends.
Canadian teams get all of the Canadian National TV broadcasting moneys divided (which is huge).
US teams get all of the versus money divided (which is small). NBC broadcasts for free unless they hit certain ratings plateaus (which they don't)
Teams cut their individual tv and radio deals and keep all of that money.
A portion of merchandising money is shared with all teams and the league for licencing. |

NCAA hockey is getting better, but Major Junior hockey still superceeds any other league in producing talent.
ps. hockey is no joke, strap some skates on and try to play once; you may gain some respect. |

Exactly. Some guys just don't like fast, aggressive contact sports with nonstop action. That guy probably watches bowling or golf. |

You got that right, it's definitely one of the toughest sports to play and it is Ferrall's favorite sport too
