Planned Request Signals Confidence That Congress Won't Prevail on Pullout

President Bush plans to ask Congress next month for up to $50 billion in additional funding for the war in Iraq, a White House official said yesterday, a move that appears to reflect increasing administration confidence that it can fend off congressional calls for a rapid drawdown of U.S. forces.

The request -- which would come on top of about $460 billion in the fiscal 2008 defense budget and $147 billion in a pending supplemental bill to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- is expected to be announced after congressional hearings scheduled for mid-September featuring the two top U.S. officials in Iraq. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker will assess the state of the war and the effect of the new strategy the U.S. military has pursued this year.

The request is being prepared now in the belief that Congress will be unlikely to balk so soon after hearing the two officials argue that there are promising developments in Iraq but that they need more time to solidify the progress they have made, a congressional aide said.

Most of the additional funding in a revised supplemental bill would pay for the current counteroffensive in Iraq, which has expanded the U.S. force there by about 28,000 troops, to about 160,000. The cost of the buildup was not included in the proposed 2008 budget because Pentagon officials said they did not know how long the troop increase would last. The decision to seek about $50 billion more appears to reflect the view in the administration that the counteroffensive will last into the spring of 2008 and will not be shortened by Congress.

I wish this lame ass Congress would tell Bush to go fuck himself

and he'll get it. also, anyone notice that death counts have been consistently going down since june, when the full count of surge troops arrived in iraq? maybe we need a thread about that. lmao.

All you Bushbots ought to get out your checkbooks. Better yet, go fight the war yourselves.

i pay my taxes. anyway, other than fighting extremism and the mideast, which we know will be a problem in the years to come and dont want to turn into a north korea situation, my opinion is that bush is a complete failure. so there you go jihadbot.

and what about the troop surge? where are all the jihadbots hiding? come out and playeyay.

oh and hey did you see al-sadr disbanded his militia (mahdi army) for 6 months ("even againt the occupiers") because they have no organization and need to regroup. i think we need a thread on that too.

Are you referring solely to troop deaths because the surge is doing zero to quell the sectarian violence or deaths amongst Iraqi civilians. In fact the death toll has doubled since the surge. Here's a few surge numbers.

•Iraq is suffering about double the number of war-related deaths nationwide compared with last year — an average daily toll of 33 in 2006, and 62 so far this year.

•Nearly 1,000 more people have been killed in violence across Iraq in the first eight months of this year than in all of 2006. So far this year, about 14,800 people have died in war-related attacks and sectarian murders. The AP accounted for 13,811 deaths in 2006.

get me some numbers on death toll since the full amount of surge troops have arrived in iraq in june, then come back. this says nothing.

also notice that most of the sectarian violence has been pushed out of baghdad, which is key to rebuilding. now we will hunt them on the ourtskirts and see what happens in the coming months.

The numbers I gave you are from 2 days ago. Here's a blurb from CBS news regarding June of this year since that what you wanted -

CBS/AP) 23 Deaths In First Six Days Of June, Almost Double That Of June 2006

Another U.S. soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq, the military said Thursday, pushing the four-year death toll for American forces to 3,501, according to an Associated Press tally.

The count includes 23 deaths in the first six days of June, an average of about four per day.

The soldier was killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded during combat operations in a southwestern section of Baghdad, a military statement said. It added that two other soldiers were wounded in the attack and evacuated to a coalition medical facility.

The soldiers' names were withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Bush administration has warned that the current troop buildup in and around Baghdad will result in more U.S. casualties as American troops increasingly come into contact with enemy forces.

I'm not rooting for more death. Believe me, I would be elated to be wrong! However you said yourself to watch the numbers since June of this year and July and August show higher numbers since June. Just sayin'.
