WASHINGTON --A military cargo plane carrying three senators and a House member was forced to take evasive maneuvers and dispatch flares to avoid ground fire after taking off from Baghdad on Thursday night.

Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts The lawmakers said their plane, a C-130, was under fire from three rocket-propelled grenades over the course of several minutes as they left for Amman, Jordan.

"It was a scary moment," said Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., who said he had just taken off his body armor when he saw a bright flash outside the window. "Our pilots were terrific. ... They banked in one direction and then banked the other direction, and they set off the flares."

Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., as well as Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Ala., were also on the plane.

Cramer and Martinez said they had just begun to relax about five or 10 minutes after the plane took off under darkness.

Crew members apparently communicated to the pilots as they saw the initial RPG fired from the ground, Cramer said. After the first burst, the pilots maneuvered aggressively and set off flares used for drawing incoming fire away from aircraft.

For the amount of our money that they've spent, they wanted an E ticket ride to brag about back home.

that is a scary thing to have happen, im glad everyone got out of their with their lives. im guessing most people wont see it as a sign that terrorism is very real and we should be out there fighting it. not in iraq, but maybe in other parts of the world. of course, i will be flamed for this response, but it is my opinion. i think terrorism could be combatted if we were smarter about where we chose to combat it

Respectfully disagree. Terrorism doesn't occur in a vaccum. Terrorism is only a tactic used by the weak as a measured response against the powerful in an attempt to combat a percieved injustice.
You can't just kill people who don't like you because they might actually have a legitimate beef.
Also, terrorists don't go to the Terrorist Trainign Academy with a Drill Sargeant who yells curses at them and a wily but good natured base commander who feeds his goldfish and collects war memorabelia.
People turn to terrorism because they think all hope is lost except for that one avenue, that single solution. If we're smart enough to remove that percieved injustice, we will also quench the flow of those who feel wronged, and ultimately lessen the amount of those with such massive greivances against us that they must resort to terrorism.

Incidentally, this particular story has nothing to do with terrorism, since a C-130 is a military aircraft being flown by the Occupying foreign force in Iraq. It was actually more of a special operations mission. Sorry to burst a bubble. Good try though. Keep on posting. :hw:

the insurgents in Iraq are the terrorists, you know the country that decided it was okay to invade a soverign country. If Repubulicans, (retards), wouldn't fight against an occupying power, well we all know how these non-service serving people feel.

I'd like to think the D Congressman from Ala could have sacrificed himself so we could pick up 2 senate seats ..just sayin

Well, at least they got their money's worth on that ride.

that's nothing. Try combat landing in Baghdad. If you don't know what the fuck is going on, you think the plane is going down. Grown men crying (and that's just chaplains :) )

probably the best thing that could have happened to them.

now they can come back and have some street cred.

Man that's gotta be hell. I get sick if I even look at an airplane or boat. If I was in one of those things while it was making evasive maneuvers, I'd be in the fetal position, calling for mommy!

I guess they will have a better understanding of supporting the troops now that they know what it is like to be a target!

What did this have to do with terrorism? Foreign plane flying over Iraqi airspace gets attacked. What else do people expect when you occupy a country?
