All the sweat, blood, tears, pain, time and lives that it took establish the Teamsters Union is about to be undone when Mexican trucks are allowed to roll onto America's highways. This is just the latest slap in the face to middle-class America and the latest relay in the race to the bottom. The Teamsters, love em or hate em propelled the average truck driver into the American middle-class and we as a nation benefited from that. Now, the ideal that a man's labor be rewarded with a decent living wage is getting shit on once again.

Mexican Trucks Begin Crossing Border Saturday

WASHINGTON -- The Teamsters Union said it has been told by officials in the Transportation Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that the first Mexican trucks will be coming across the border on Saturday.

The union said Wednesday it would ask a federal appeals courts to block the Bush administration's plan to begin allowing Mexican trucks to carry cargo anywhere in the United States.

Teamsters leaders said they planned to seek an emergency injunction Wednesday from the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

"What a slap in the face to American workers, opening the highways to dangerous trucks on Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest driving weekends of the year," said Teamsters President Jim Hoffa.

Joining the Teamsters in seeking the emergency stay were the Sierra Club and Public Citizen.
"Before providing unconditional access throughout the country to tens of thousands of big rigs we know little to nothing about, we must insure they meet safety and environmental standards," Sierra Club executive director Carl Pope said.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in a statement, said it was working closely with the department's inspector general "as his office completes an additional assessment of the program and we prepare a detailed response to that report."

The Bush administration said last week it would start the cross-border program once the Transportation Department's inspector general certifies safety and inspection plans.

Leslie Miller, a Teamsters spokeswoman, said attorneys for the federal truck safety agency advised the union's lawyers that they expect to get that certification on Friday. She said the Teamsters also were told by the agency attorneys that limited authority for trucks to begin crossing the border will be approved Saturday.

Supporters of the plan say letting more Mexican trucks on U.S. highways will save American consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.

Labor and driver-owner groups have been fighting the measure -- part of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement -- since it was first proposed, saying the program will erode highway safety and eliminate U.S. jobs.

A one-year demonstration project would allow 100 Mexican motor carriers full access to U.S. roads. It can begin as soon as the inspector general certifies that safety and inspection plans and facilities are sufficient to ensure the Mexican trucks are as safe as U.S. trucks.

Since 1982, Mexican trucks have had to stop within a buffer border zone and transfer their loads to U.S. trucks.

According to the CHP, 18 percent of Mexican carriers were sidelined in 2006. That figure stands in contrast with the 19 percent of American companies.

No, I see it as yet another give away to corporations so they can stop paying a living wage to truck drivers and exploit lower-wage Mexican drivers. They will make many millions of dollars and the American truck drivers wage will be threatened and there won't be as many runs available for them if this is allowed to pass.

Sure, consumers will save a few pennies... but fuck the security concerns and the problems we will have when Mexican trucks start injuring and killing American drivers. Then we can have international litigation for traffic accidents. :)

They probably already slipped in a arbitration clause and we don't know it yet.

This is designed to replace the higher paid American driver with a lower paid Mexican driver. Period. There will have to be more Mexican drivers than ever before if they are allowed to drive into US destinations because before they only went so far and an American driver took the load. Now that American driver can stay home while the lower paid Mexican driver does what he used to do. Now, what about all the time the low-wage Mexican driver is suddenly spending in the US. He's not able to get back to Mexico as quick as he used to, so another Mexican driver will get a job making the runs he used to make.

It'll only be a matter of time before those low-wage Mexican drivers are allowed to take a load back to Mexico. Why, they are already in the country and it's a shame to send the truck back empty. A waste of fuel and corporate profits and such. So I guess more American drivers can stay home and watch Oprah.

This is fucking bullshit it is!

One of The Liberal Gods signed NAFTA His name was Bill Clinton. Also its well known that labor union donates millions to the Dems, But why when they throw them under the bus too! This new plan for trucking is part of CAFTA, which is being hidden from America for some reason. I do expect that the government will sell us out on this too. And I don't trust Bush on this either.

maybe the Mexicans will do it without all the meth, crack and toothless hookers... IE more efficiently and cheaper.

maybe I'm just prejudiced because I drive from LA to SF once a month on the grapevine and have stopped at every truckstop on the way for coffee and bathroom breaks.

The teamsters now face the challenge of organizing Mexican drivers.
I hope they can do this, if not their union may be doomed.

Ya know what, truck drivers are pretty gritty, ain't they? They don't all do Meth though, that's an exaggeration, maybe 80 percent... :)

Lemme see if you get this... The very fact that truckers in general, are gritty, crusty, good ole boys, ya know, regular people who only by virtue of their Union were brought into the middle-class is one of the greatest things about America and why I love this country so much.

In my travels, I have meet and worked with regular, ordinary Americans from all over the US. Each and every one of them deserves to have their labor honored with a decent wage.

The Mexican truck drivers deserve the same. The "illegal" immigrants deserve the same. The fact that our country continues to exploit workers is a great shame upon our nation. Paying a substandard wage saps human dignity and spirit.

A fair days wage for a fair days work is what made our country the economic powerhouse it once was before a bunch of treasonous mother-fuckers start pecking away at it like a bunch of vultures.

BTW CT, watch your stance in those truck stop men's rooms. :)

Well, like I said, it's a corporate give-away that ignores any safety and security concerns and fucks the American worker right in the ass.

SOP from our Government the last 25 years.

Well I've called and emailed my legislators about this latest bullshit but you all know what good that does. Might as well stick my finger up my ass, I would get the same result.

Someday the working man is going to reclaim our country, hopefully it's soon.

Be safe out there soulman!

This serves the Teamsters just right. They supported Comprehensive Immigration reform.

Comprehensive immigration reform = Amnesty + Little Border Security + A Host of New Illegals

From their website:

Immigration
The Teamsters will continue to work for comprehensive immigration reform that includes smart border security measures and earned legalization for undocumented workers who have contributed to our communities. The Teamsters will oppose legislation containing a guest worker program.

Update;

Bush Administration Delays Unpopular Program Until After Labor Day.

(Washington, D.C.) - Plans to open the border to Mexican trucks this weekend were postponed until at least Thursday, September 6.

The Bush administration’s lawyers on Thursday told the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that “DOT (Department of Transportation) now anticipates that the Demonstration Project will not begin before Thursday, September 6.”

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa said the negative publicity generated by the union’s request for an injunction forced the Bush administration to delay its proposed pilot program.

“Dangerous trucks should not be driving all the way from Mexico to Maine and Minnesota,” Hoffa said. “The American people understand that, Congress understands that and the Teamsters understand that. What is it about safety and national security that George Bush doesn’t understand?”

As one indication of the program’s unpopularity, the House of Representatives voted 411-3 on May 15 to halt the program until safety and security standards were met.

The Bush administration made no formal announcement about the expected start date for the controversial program. The Bush administration lawyers, however, told the Teamsters that Mexican trucking companies would be granted permission to roll across the borders on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Reporters learned from the Teamsters that the Bush administration planned to open the borders to Mexican trucks on Labor Day weekend. When reporters tried to get a straight answer from the Department of Transportation, they couldn’t.

It is only in a footnote to legal papers filed Thursday, Aug. 30, that the Bush administration reveals its plans to open the border on Thursday, Sept. 6. The papers were filed in the 9th Circuit Court in response to the Teamsters’ motion for an injunction.

“I will continue to fight like hell to prevent Mexican trucks from endangering lives throughout the United States,” Hoffa said. “I’m confident the court will side with the Teamsters and with the American people by blocking this program before it starts next week.”

The Teamsters will also ask Congress to block the program as soon as it returns from vacation.

Founded in 1903, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women.

I dunno...

one of our offices up North does a lot of truck death cases.

usually its a load shifting or a massive blowout on a big incline that causes the truck to tip over onto a car.

not sure if it matters who's driving.-

Crazy Tree thinks he is one of the anointed. A privileged member of society, if you will. He has no use for anyone who labors for a living. He's made that very clear in his posting for the last year and a half I've been here.

I know just like any other profession there is drug use, but for the most part drivers are just like anyone else their main objective is to put food on the table and get home alive, drug use in a truck is STUPID, if you are involved in an accident where there are injuries and you come up hot on a piss test, you are FUCKED BIG TIME, theres nothing like trying to reach your destination only to have the rain turn to freezing rain and your 60,000 lb trailer is trying to pass you and the thought going through your head is whether this is the last day on earth you will see.

YES, they can rip your life and truck apart any fucking time they feel like it, going into a Government facility you can count on the whole 9 yards...dogs and all ( been there done that, I spent a lot of time on military bases, some after you get through the first check in, you then go to a second where you are given and escort and checked again to get into the secure locations, if you even have as much as a pot pipe in that truck, you will go to jail. )

Hey CT...I dont understand your position...I understand that you are hispanic, and so you are a little sensitive to Mexican workers and their rights...ok...but dont you see that you are championing them to be exploited? They arent getting hired because they are more efficient, they are getting hired because they are cheaper...thats it...Basically they know they can undercut the MExican drivers and they wont bitch, because the poor bastards would take whatever they could get. And you are supporting that? I would think you might support them driving over here...but that they should get the same wages as Americans would get. Why do you support Mexicans being held down in the lower class?

I have worked in and around construction my entire life.

I would say that yes, factually, Mexican laborers work harder and are easier to work with than their American counterparts... including Mexican-Americans.

And in LA they get paid fair wages in construction, and work twice as hard as their American counterparts. Then you take into account they don't pay taxes and they're earning the equivalent of $13-15/hr. in my experience.

They're not going to move up in class because they lack the education and in some cases the language skills.

Their kids on the otherhand... if they can dodge the gangs and drugs... are going to have a huge leg up. Keep in mind that "home" in Mexico tends to be a violent dirty shithole.

nigga please.

you don't know a fucking thing about me, nor will you ever.

today I will share.

I worked harder by age 18 than you have probably worked in your entire life.

every day of my life I have been driven to better myself and work harder to achieve more in my life.

School and work made for 18-20 hour days for my entire adult life.

Now that I completed grad school, I'm getting ready to go right back in for another advanced degree.

So spare me... nobody you know in your life has worked as hard as I have and given up as much as I have.

What I have learned in all those years is that there is a huge swath of white American society that have become lazy, complacent and have delusions of entitlement.

Example: trucking. I drove a truck for a year when I was 18. It was the easiest job I ever had, and even performing at 20% I still outworked every single one of my colleagues. Why? Because I worked hard and I worked smart.

Same has gone with every job I have ever had, from dishwasher, to soldier, to construction... the hardest working and most honest workers in Southern California have been disproportionately Mexican. And these people get shit on on a daily basis by idiots like you who are threatened by their work ethic.

Is it that hard to drive a truck? Or do framing? Or work at a grocery store? It's fucking not, and people should not be paid $25 to do it... it's a huge waste. It requires no intelligence and no skill.

Honestly I hate menial labor with a passion. It's tedious and worthless work, so while all my coworkers were getting drunk and watching football, or out trying to get laid, I was studying and improving myself so I could do work that I considered to be important and that challenged me intellectually.

This is what people here in this country don't understand: you have to adapt and teach yourself new skills... or risk having your job handed over to someone who can do it just as well as you can for half the wages.

Highly skilled and technical jobs are America's future.

This is not an issue of American vs. Mexican... this is an issue of American vs. the World. If India was next door to the US instead of Mexico, it would be the Indians who would be here doing the jobs for a realistic wage... not the highly inflated and inefficient wages that Americans have gotten fat and accustomed to over the past 50 years.

I'm sorry but you don't deserve $30/hr. to rivet shit all day.

Your lesson in reality today is that in most countries, if you don't work, you and your family will live in abject squallor. Therefore people are thankful to have their jobs, unlike today's young workforce, who hate thier employers because they're not getting paid some imaginary wage that they MISTAKENLY think they are entitled to. You don't deserve $50/hr... you had people DVDs at fucking BEst Buy... something we could probably train a chimp to do.

In China, India, Korea and Singapore... people are literally KILLING THEMSELVES to get into technical schools. Here our kids are too busy jacking off and watching MTV to even consider going to college. These countries are producing workers that are highly skilled, motivated and CHEAP.... because they actually want to be better people.

This fucking country is too fucking infatuated with worthless ideas from worthless people to make any progress. The people who are creating progress in this country are the people who have worked hard and worked intelligently their entire lives. The 90% of this country who cares more about worthless subhumans like 50 Cent and Nicole Richie are dead weight and they are fucking our shit up.

We have become a country of angry, entitled, nasty, worthless and lazy wiggers.

If it were up to me I'd open up all the borders... people from abroad have value systems that we lost some time during the 1970's. They work hard and they don't expect anything to be handed to them. IE they realize that you don't deserve a $2,000 Louis Vuitton purse, CHARGED TO YOUR CREDIT CARD, just because you saw Lindsay Lohan with one on E!

This country was once the greatest country in the world... somehow along the way we got fucked up... and today's youth know more about Jay-Z and Angelina Jolie than they know about their own history.

This shit is FUCKED.

sure they do...

but there's a bit of a shortage of them...

being that much of India can barely afford to take a bus to New Dehli on a truck full of goats, much less airfare to the old US of A.

Indians and "Pakis" are hard workers. In Hong Kong, Singapore, the Bahamas, Fiji, East Africa... the British took them along because they were hard workers and dependable. Very hard working people... now they're in almost all of the Middle Eastern countries working too... babysitting in Saudi Arabia [NEWS REFERENCE LOLE] or getting decapitated along with Filipinos in Iraq.

PS don't ever call someone from the Indian subcontinent a "Paki"... because they're liable to try and take a swing at you.

School and work made for 18-20 hour days for my entire adult life.

Now that I completed grad school, I'm getting ready to go right back in for another advanced degree.

So spare me... nobody you know in your life has worked as hard as I have and given up as much as I have.

Cry me a fucking river, than go wash your stinking cunt. You little fucking pussy, I'll tell you your problem right now, you think the world needs to bend over and kiss your fucking ass. For what reason, I don't know. You think you're the only swinging dick who works hard! My God! Where the fuck do you come off, you think you are God's fucking gift to society but are bitter as fuck because society has yet to recognize you.

I started working full time during the summers after 9th grade and part time during my remaining school years. When I first got married I worked two fucking jobs for eight years, each one a demanding mother-fucking job at that and I never complained about it or wrote a fucking manifesto about how great I was for doing it. I did it because it needed to be done. You fucking sicken me to no end. Fucking cry-baby, pussy-ass bitch!

Yeah, OK, you're old and wise and can see into the hearts of wide swaths of white people...

You're an asshole with a persecution complex. You feel inferior to whites. You feel you're better than white people, you don't like white people. Guess what that makes YOU? :)

Illusions of grandeur... You're sicker than I thought. You performing at 20 percent is just that; Someone performing at 20 percent. Why? Because although you think you're a superman and better than everyone else that walks the earth, it's not true. It's all in that warped head of yours. You perform at 20 percent and everybody around you will pass you by. Fucking idiot...

Again baby, your racist nature rears it's head and again I have to say Fuck You asshole! My wife happens to be from South America and my last name happens to end with a vowel. We ended up with beautiful children, just don't ask me to explain their heritage because it takes too long. Yet you, the man you can see into the hearts of wide swathes of white people, have no fucking problem accusing me of shitting on Mexicans. I don't have a racist bone in my body and the only man that I feel threatened by is myself because through the years I've learned, It's only yourself that can raise you up and put you down. I'm not one bit like you, looking around at the rest of the world and wondering what they think of me and why they are not giving me things. I make my way through the world doing the best I can for others and put my faith in other people and hope they do the same.

Honestly I hate menial labor with a passion. It's tedious and worthless work, so while all my coworkers were getting drunk and watching football, or out trying to get laid, I was studying and improving myself so I could do work that I considered to be important and that challenged me intellectually.

Here's where you truly expose your disdain and contempt for working people asswipe. What's the matter CT, did the bad people pick on you on the jobsite...

What makes you the great decider about who should earn what? Your over-inflated ego is at work here. You want to better yourself, fine, go do it but don't condemn people for wanting to live their life in the way they see fit. Those same guys watching ball games, drinking beer and chasing tail and probably for more contented and sound than you, you carries around a burden of hate for all that is around him.

And yeah... it takes no skill to frame houses. Maybe for you, cause all you had to do was stack the lumber where you were told and get the real carpenters coffee.

Oh my, aren't we blessed to have the great crazy tree tell us all what we should be doing and what we don't understand. I think you have my country confused with someplace else or you've been duped by the treasonous assholes who have sold this country and peddled that skilled job and high-tech job bullshit. I have traveled the US extensively and have worked in just about area of the country, with all different kinds of people and in most places in America, there no fucking high-tech jobs to replace the industrial jobs that went over-seas. This country was built up during the industrial revolution and you can't just pull the rug out from an Industrial based area and expect high-tech jobs to come swooping in. It's a myth and I see you slurped up every bit of it. Good boy...

I'm sorry but you don't deserve $30/hr. to rivet shit all day.

Hey asshole, no one has anything against Mexicans. Calm the fuck down...

Again dickwad, for you to proclaim that America has been fat and accustomed inflated wages for the past years is either a sign of a mental defect or you're just plain stupid. Real wages have been going down the past few years and the assault on the middle-class started 25 years ago. I don't know what fucking planet you came from but I wish you would return.

You know what, you need to move to a better neighborhood and go see a doctor.

You see CT, this is America and the middle class was created because the American worker demanded a living wage and through the blood, sweat and tears of a movement, he got it. You directly benefit from working men and women who fought that battle to this day and yet you so easily dishonor and spit upon working people during this tortured diatribe of yours. Is there anything you don't hate asshole? Your last thought there also seems to be a self-fulling phophesy... Your certainly are angry, entitled, nasty and worthless

And another fucking thing, over the last dozen or more years, I've done many, many jobs in Texas and have probably worked with more Mexicans than asswipe CT ever has. Yes, they are good workers and I enjoy working with them because unlike the malcontent CT, most Mexican people seem very light of heart and spirit and like to have a good time fucking around and joking around on the job.

They are good people to work with but they ain't fucking supermen. I do the same jobs in Texas as I do in Michigan and they both get done in the same way, in the same time. Men are men. No difference.

The times I have seen Mexican workers working very hard is when they have some fucking asshole standing over them, sweating and riding their ass. I've seen Mexican workers abused by these fucking overlords that run the crew. That is not the way America works but that is exactly what CT would love for our country to become.

I guess that way he can feel even more superior to his fellow man.

Put all the emotion and knee-jerk reaction aside, and I must say that CT does make some valid points, although his manner of speaking was definately laced with elitism and a bit of reverse racism.

Nonetheless, it's an undeniable truth that we have some serious labor issues here in the States. Unions, which have served us so well in the last century, account for only 8% of the workforce, a severe drop from what they once were.

NC-STERN-MARK, thanks for that piece from Krugman. It was a nice refresher of how things really are.

It is true that we have an absolute problem with the amount of GOOD skilled labor we produce, and it's also true that our primary and secondary educational systems have produced mediocre students. Getting that fixed should be priority #1.
Secondly, our government NEEDS to put a real stop to trade imbalances. If China HAD to mirror trade and labor practices or lose their #1 trade partner, you would see the cost of products rise a bit, while the cost of exported US goods to China actually come down a bit.
It would also make CEO's rethink their carpet bomb policy of overseas manufacturing.

In addition, people need to have the incentives of making goods overseas and shipping them here removed. If you move to a mailbox in the Cayman's, but do most of your REAL work here, you pay the full taxes here, and fuck your mailbox.

The problem is that Americans were never given the opportunity by their government to adapt to a technical world. It used to be that you could graduate from 4 years of college and make a decent salary, but now even that is in question.

One last thing I can't understand, and I'd actually appreciate some input please.
It's common knowledge that it's mostly central and south americans that pick produce. Why isn't there a program that takes young kids between high school and college and marries them up with producers of lettuce, etc, instead of relying on mexicans to do that menial work?

If you read my post carefully, it had nothing to do with other people, other places or places you've been, it had everything to do with someone that spent maybe a year driving a beach ball mobile that now claims to be an expert in all forms of the trucking industry being in adverse weather conditions in the middle of nowhere showing the world how it's done, I wonder if changing a flat tire makes you a car mechanic also ?
Like I said ,if the worthless menial work and the people that perform it bother you to a point that you have these opinions, why do you stuff your face with the fruits of their labor ? quit eating.
