PCHR weekly report: “Five Palestinians killed, one child killed by settlers, 19 resident injured

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) based in Gaza published its weekly report on the Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories during the period between September 13 and September 19 – 2007. During the reported period, Israeli troops shot and killed five Palestinians, including two children, injured nineteen other residents, including six children and one woman.
The PCHR reported that soldiers carried twenty invasions into the occupied West Bank and two invasions into the Gaza Strip.
Twenty-six civilians were kidnapped in the West Bank and three others were kidnapped in the Gaza Strip.
Attacks in the West Bank:
On September 16, Israeli soldiers assassinated a resistance fighter in Balata refugee camp, east of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
On the same day, soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian resident in Hebron city, in the southern part of the West Bank and injured four other residents in the same attack.
On September 17, soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian teen in Ramallah city, north of Jerusalem after claiming that the teen was carrying an explosive charge. PCHR investigation revealed that the child hurled stones at invading forces but did not carry any weapons or explosives.
Also on September 17, one child was crushed to death by a settlers’ vehicle near the West Bank city of Salfit. The settler rammed the child with his vehicle as the child was standing near a road used by settlers. The child was hit in the head and died instantly.
The Israeli police examined the site and stated that the settler did not even try to use his brakes.
On September 18, soldiers shot and killed one child in Al Ein refugee camp, in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, and injured four other residents.
Soldiers barred ambulances and medical teams from reaching the injured child, and he bled to death in front of his parents.
The attack against Al Ein refugee camp started on September 16 when the army invaded it and injured a resident fighter before abducting him.
On September 19, and as the army continued its offensive in Al Ein refugee camp, one physically challenged resident was shot and killed by the invading Israeli forces. At least eight residents were injured during ensuing clashes; two of the injured were children.
Moreover, one resident died at a military roadblock near the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem on September 15, after the soldiers stopped him for a long while although he suffers from cancer and was accompanied by his brothers to a Palestinian hospital east of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem
Soldiers continued the isolation of Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank. Contrary to promises by the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to ease restrictions on movement in the West Bank, soldiers positioned at various checkpoints in the West Bank have continued to impose severe restrictions on the movement of Palestinian civilians, the PCHR reported.
Thousands of Muslim worshipers were barred from reaching the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to conduct Friday prayers especially during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
The PCHR also reported that on Friday, 14 September, soldiers stationed at Anata checkpoint east of Jerusalem abused a child from Shufat refugee camp.
The child and his mother were heading to Jerusalem, troops abused him and insulted his mother and the child punched one of the soldiers who continued to insult and abuse them.
Soldiers then hit and clubbed the child for 30 minutes and let loose a military dog at the child for fifteen minutes. Later on the child was taken prisoner.
On Sunday September 15, soldiers broke into the house of child’s father and took him prisoner.
Settlements and settler attacks:
As mentioned above, on September 17, one child was crushed to death by a settlers’ vehicle near the West Bank city of Salfit. The settler rammed the child with his vehicle as the child was standing near a road used by settlers. The child was hit in the head and died instantly
In other attacks, Israeli soldiers confiscated 523 Dunams of orchards which belong to residents of Al Khader and Ertas towns, south of west of the West Bank city of Bethlehem. The illegal land grab was carried out by direct Israeli military orders in order to expand Efrat Israeli settlement south west of Bethlehem district.
On September 19, a settlers group of Carmiel illegal settlement outpost, south of Hebron in the southern part of the West Bank, attacked Palestinian residents working in an agricultural project which belong to the Palestinian agricultural relief, cut bared wires and installed around Palestinian farmlands.
The settlers also broke locks leading to the land and uprooted several plants.
Attacks against peaceful protests against the Wall:
On September 14, during the weekly Friday nonviolent protest against the Annexation Wall in Bil’in village, west of Ramallah, Israeli soldiers attacked Palestinian, Israeli and international peace activists.
The army fired round bombs, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters at the peaceful protesters causing several injuries.
On the same day, soldiers attacked another protest against the Wall in Al Walaja village, near Bethlehem. Troops fired sound bombs, tear gas canister and rubber-coated metal bullets. Five protestors fainted after inhaling gas fired by the army.
Attacks in the Gaza Strip :
On September 13, one Palestinian child was seriously injured when an explosive charge left by the army in an earlier invasion detonated near him as he was playing close to his home.
On September 15, one child was seriously injured in Beit Hanoun, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip during an Israeli military invasion to the area. The army also bulldozed farmlands and uprooted trees during the invasion, and fired rounds of live ammunition at dozens of homes. Moreover, the army carried two failed assassination attempts in the Gaza Strip. The first attack was carried out on September 13 when the Israeli air force fired a missile at a vehicle near Jabalia. Four Islamic Jihad fighters were in the attacked vehicle but managed to escape unharmed.
On September 14, the Israeli air force fired a missile at a vehicle also carrying Islamic Jihad fighters north of Gaza City, the fighters managed to escape unharmed.
Moreover, on September 13, troops fired a missile at an area located between the Gaza International Airport and Al Shouka area in Rafah in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, damage was reported.
During night hours of the same day, soldiers fired a missile which detonated in an agricultural area causing damage.
The Gaza Strip remained under strict siege since more than 15 months, and remained isolated from the West Bank and the rest of the world.
The siege includes closing all commercial and border crossing, causing sharp decreaseof basic goods, fuels and medicine.
The closure is affecting all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip and causing further destruction in the already collapsed economy as the residents are unable to work.
Exports and imports are nearly dead and only limited goods are allowed through. |

Food running out as Israeli raid in Palestinian camp enters third day
By ALI DARAGHMEH (Associated Press Writer)NABLUS, West Bank - Residents of a crowded refugee camp outside of Nablus said they were running out of food and water on Thursday, as an Israeli army raid against Palestinian militants raged for a third day.
The army is allowing food, medicine and ambulances into the Ein Bet Ilmeh camp, military spokesman Zidki Mamman said. But with a tight curfew clamped on the camp since Tuesday, some of the 5,000 residents said they couldn't leave their homes to buy food.
Hussam Hamdan, 30, said troops had confined him in a house along with some 70 other people, and they were subsisting on depleted stores of bread and olives. "There is no food in this house we are in," Hamdan said.
Lara Kanan, 23, said water was running out in some houses because rooftop water tanks had been hit by bullets.
The food shortages were especially painful coming during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when observant Muslims fast during the day, then break the fast at night with a celebratory meal known as iftar.
"There is no food in this house we are in," Hamdan said. "We will not have an iftar now."
Israeli troops backed by tanks and bulldozers launched the raid on Tuesday in an attempt to root out a cell of fighters from two Palestinian groups, Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who were planning an attack in Israel, the army said.
Two Palestinians and one Israeli soldier were killed in the first two days of the fighting.
About three dozen people have been arrested since the raid began, the army said. It could not immediately say whether any of them belonged to the cell the army was pursuing.
Soldiers have been conducting house-to-house searches in the camp's narrow alleys, knocking down walls to get from one building to the next, witnesses said.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Thursday for a halt to the "invasion of Nablus and its refugee camps," which he said was the most recent example of Israel's "policy of invasion." Abbas spoke at a joint press conference with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Troops fired rubber-coated bullets to disperse a protest by residents calling for an end to the raid, residents said. Hospital officials said 14 people have been wounded by rubber bullets since Wednesday, including two on Thursday. |
