Few of the TUF generation appreciate how huge Mauricio "Shogan" Rua was to the ligh heavy division. Shogun was Pride's Tom Brady. Shogun knocked out current Pride LHW champ Rampage and kneebarred monster Kevin Randleman.
So how did he go from these hights to getting tapped by journeyman Forrest Griffin? No roids and no breaks in the ufc schedule to fight tomato cans.
Pride did no testing for drugs (with the exception of their one time fight in Las Vegas). Chute Box (Shogun, Nina (his brother) and Vanderlai) were notorious juicers and Pride stand outs. Take away the juice and you have loses by all three.
Next, take away the tomato cans. In Pride, you were guaranteed a steady stream of hapless pro wrastlers w/o a legit fight on record. Pride loved to cross market the sports by having pro wrestling entertainers enter mma and vice versa. The pro wrestlers generally got their asses kicked (Takada v. Chickson Gracie aka Rickson), but Pride was not above paying an mma fighter to work (Coleman's loss by heel hook to no talent Takeda).
Let's forget about the last of the Pride "champions" who's holding out: Fedor. Fedor is pudgy white guy who cuts easy. He isn't worth shit. |

The point is that the super stars of Pride (Cro Cop, Shogun, Minotauro) have been deeply disappointing. Rampage was an also ran at Pride, not a super star. Same for Anderson Silva.
Cro Cop was supposed to own the heavy weight division based on his performane in Pride (knocked out Vanderlai Silva, tko'd Barnett, whooped Fedor's brother). But in the UFC he got his ass kicked by two nobodies in a row. He also looked very weak and small. That's one guy definately missing the roids.
Shogun used to blast through his opponents in Pride. In the UFC, he get's tapped out (for the first time) by a journeyman. He also looks very small and weak.
I could go on, but it has to make you wonder about what the hell was going on Pride. |

Rampage fought one fight for that corrupt, shitty organization. The majority of his career and notoriety came from Pride; and whatever did not came from his stay in KOTC.
He was one of the biggest American superstars in Pride and got more of a pop than Liddell did at 205. He was instantly over after his slams on Sakuraba.
Cro Cop was the third best HW in Pride and doesn't seem to give a shit anymore. That doesn't necessarily mean steroids are to blame.
And why is the distinguishing between "stars" and "superstars" relevant? Ok, so Pride's top 5 in each weight class aren't doing well but their midcarders are two UFC title holders? That still hurts your point, which is essentially that Pride sucked and their fighters juiced.
Btw, how many UFC fighters are juicing?
Champions/Contenders Sherk, Sylvia, Franca, Marquardt have all been CAUGHT when they knew they were being tested. How many others cycle off...like every single fighter? |

Crocop was considered one of the best HWs in the world. He was supposed to come in the UFC and walk through the top guys, AA, sylvia, couture, vera, ect. He comes in and gets KOd by a guy who isn't even in the top 10, then another disappointing loss to another guy who is in no way a elite fighter.
As a whole the lackluster performances from the ex pride fighters bring up suspicion. Shogun suddenly has no gas tank and gets beaten by a reality show fighter? Gomi comes to the US (pride 33) and gasses after one round to a guy who was at best a mid level UFC fighter. What noone is talking about is the terrible performance last sat. by Kazuhiro Nakamura. Just another fighter who bombs when fighting with drug testing. ndhalogod, you are most likely right, its not that the UFC fighters aren't taking steroids but they just know how to cycle off effectively. You may be right, but its really suspicious when all these guys start to suck when coming to the UFC. Rampage is without a doubt a Pride fighter, but anderson silva is more of a journeyman. He was in cage rage as long as he was in pride, and it was almost 3 years since fighting in pride when he made his UFC debut. Its pointless to argue about it since pride is dead but I wouldn't consider anderson a pride fighter. |

I have a tape of Takada from back before Pride when they called it shoot fighting and he was the top dog and an incredible technician. By the time he entered Pride he was a little long in the tooth.
It is interesting that the top Brazillians are all getting beat now that there is testing. |
