I just heard on ABC that John Force was in an accident and has broken both his legs. I assume this will be on replay tonight or something?
TripleDigitRide
On September 23, 2007 Force was injured in a crash at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Fall Nationals in Ennis, TX as he crossed the finish line against Kenny Bernstein. He was taken to a local hospital with two broken legs. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Funny Car driver Kenny Bernstein gave the press a short update on what happened from his perspective concerning the accident with John Force today during Fall Nationals Funny Car eliminations.

Some excerpts from Bernstein's statement:

"I know he [Force] was talking to me, he was worrying about whether I was hurt....typical John. I told him I was fine, but I'm not sure how much of it he remembers."

Regarding his Funny Car moving towards the centerline at the end of the strip: "I kept turning and correcting it, and it kept sticking. I just couldn't get it to come back....we about wadded up together....I saw my [car] body and John's [car] body coming apart and going past me....I saw John's car hit the wall really hard."

Bernstein feels that Force's car also was having problems and was crossing over into his lane...."I saw the front of his car pointed towards me."

At this point Bernstein has not had a chance to really review the tape, and I do not have access to it right now myself.

Bernstein himself is not injured. He said, "I did have a little headache right when I stopped, and I want to say that because of John's work in that area, of new head pads, I want to give John and his team credit. It was a pretty violent head movement but if not for those new pads it could have been a lot worse."

John Force is heading to (correction, not Parkland as previously reported) Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He has two severely broken legs, some hand damage to one hand, and a possible concussion. The extent of any internal injuries is unknown pending further evaluation. His wife Laurie is with him.

Daughter Ashley Force is scheduled to race Cruz Pedregon in the Funny Car semifinals later today.

I think the accident is about to come up on espn 2
Miller
it's on now i think.
Miller
Wow...it broke Force's car in half...not the body but the frame.

that is wild, I just checked over here to see if there were any interesting threads and saw this one, this was like THIRTY SECONDS before their race was on ESPN2..I flipped over just as they were staging..WOW...I've seen worse in drag racing, but the way his car broke apart and when they were trying to flip his cage over, if I hadn't of saw this thread first and read that he had survived, I would have assumed he was dead watching it live..

btw, if "severely broken legs" is as bad as it sounds, I could see this wreck as the thing that finally retires Force..between losing his driver earlier this year, and now major injuries, at his age, maybe he'll finally get out before it kills him.. :(

Jesus christ you see his legs flinging through the air!!!

God speed on JF's recovery...
and, on a sad but true note, welcome in a new Force contingent...

very doubtful that John will be back as a driver, sad day indeed...

John Force will no doubt be involved with NHRA for a long time to come,be it crew chief or owner or whatever, but it sure is a sad day to see this...
Miller
I thought for sure his car broke apart when he slammed into Kenny but that doesn't seem so. It looks like his back tires blew up then he pulled the chutes and his car pulled apart. That is an amazing wreck. It's a good thing that only Force was hurt and not only Kenny.

I feel so bad for his daughter rusying to the accident sceen and having to watch her dad go through that. She was in the next Funny Car race I think. I can't believe her heart was in it.

John will probably always leave the crew cheif stuff up to Austin or whoever he apoints. JF will probably be around but who knows how he will come out of this wreck. i think he was hoping for his daughters to take over for him as a driver and Ashley has skilz but who knows if her heart will be in it after this. NHRA.com is blowd up again so I can't see how she finished.

Too bad man....Get well soon John and best of wishes to your family.

kenny hit a cone witch caused the cone to shoot into johns rear tires he blew a tire and all hell broken loose god speed john forse the greatest drag racer in history he is the best thing that has happen to nhra johns updates are 2 broken legs and one broken arm .. get well john
phuktard
she didn't race...mistake, IMO...

It will be interesting to see what Daddy Force has to say about A.Force deciding not to race...

John will no doubt come out of this injury with both guns blazing...Driving? Probably not...I would hope that he would but let's be real...

At ant rate, prayers and good vibes to the Force household...
Kilroy
yeah, Ashley was actually in the race right before John's...then she pulled out of the next round...in all honesty, it was the smartest thing she could do, as a fellow competitor, I wouldn't want to be out there racing against another driver who's head isn't 100% into what they are doing..

I'm watching this wreck for the 4th time and I think I saw something that looked like legs and feet flying through the air. That is brutal if we actually saw what we think we saw.

Just read on ESPN.com that he broke his left ankle and wrist.

Last word I heard was he had a compound fracture on one leg, a messed up other let with possible ligament damage in the knee, one broken arm and a messed up wrist/broken fingers on the other arm. The way it sounds John Force is all but a quad at this point. Luckily it doesn’t sound like he will stay this way.

BTW…I think the decision for Ashley to not race in the next round was the smart one. She is still a young driver and doesn’t need the pressure of her hurt father on her mind or she could end up worse.
mckenna
Where did you find out about the compound fracture, all I could find was reports of a broken wrist and ankle, also that they were optimistic that he would have a full recovery.
Geme2005
From what i read on NHRA.com and what ESPN has said. Hes got a compound fracture in his ankle and a laceration on the knee down to the bone. A broken wrist and a few broken fingers on the right hand. Really sucks, i dont think he will be racing the rest of the year. Its a tough break for the team this year. But maybe might see Scelzi's old crew chief Mike Zeff race this year to take John's spot. One may never know, i do hope he shows up to the races at least. I wanna say hi to him in Vegas next month.

Team spokesman Elon Werner said the 58-year-old Force broke his left ankle and his left wrist and suffered a severe abrasion to his right knee.

Werner said a CT scan came back negative for internal injuries. He also said Force sustained some minor fractures and severe abrasions to the tips of his fingers.

The John Force Team issued a statement saying the prognosis for a full recovery was very good.

Here's an interview with Force from his hospital bed. He is one lucky guy to have his legs still intact.

Yeah that was one hell of a nasty wreck. Glad both of those guys are ok. I grew up watching and cheering for those two guys.

I was there, and it was damm scary. I've seen some bad wrecks at TMS, but nothing like that. They're taking good care of him at Baylor Dallas.
