Apparently Alan Greenspan thinks it would be a good idea:
"On other issues, Greenspan said the United States must look at ways to reduce gasoline use both as a matter of national security and to protect the environment.
Greenspan said he favors a tax on gasoline to help curb demand. But recognizing that this could be an "undue burden" on poor people, he suggested a rebate of some sort. There is a national gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon."

Actually 50 cents won't do shit to consumption patterns, it needs to be like $3 or $4 per gallon like it is in Europe to actually affect patterns. Problem has been for years gas has been so cheap our whole transportation infrastructure was built around it. When gas is cheap, the commute distances are very long, cars can be bigger, which means more road use, congestion, road wear, and then repair, more sprawling development, etc... it has been a cycle that has gone out of control.
We don't have to wait for taxes though, just a booming India and China to increase demand and more instability in the Middle East to drive prices up further. |
