JOHN EDWARDS

Edwards: 'Pretty Soon We’re Not Going to Have a Young African-American Male Population in America.'

Asked about what he could do about "inner-city kids partaking in violence" at the MTV/MySpace Forum yesterday, Democratic candidate John Edwards offered an apocalyptic prediction for young black males:

“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”

Hyperbole much? Despite popular misperception and those who find it a convenient talking point to illustrate inescapable racism, there are more young African-American men in college than in prison. In 2005, according to the Census Bureau, there were 864,000 black men in college. According to Justice Department statistics, there were 802,000 in federal and state prisons and jails; between the ages of 18 and 24, however, black men in college outnumber those incarcerated by 4 to 1.

If it was anyone from the GOP saying this, it would be front page news nationwide. We'd have Sharpton marching on Washington.

you don't have to worry about the GOP candidates when they repeatedly blow off stuff like this

Four top GOP candidates skip minority debate
Rivals criticize Giuliani, McCain, Romney and Thompson

that has been and will continue to be a much bigger story than what edwards said. (despite there not being a liberal bias in the media) i think its dumb for them to skip that debate, nobody has failed the black community like democrats, but as long as republicans turn their back to blacks (hehe) the black community will never support them. that being said, not showing up to the debate is veiled racism, essentially saying we know none of you blecks are gonna vote for our white asses so why bother, but thats better than saying all young black men are going to wind up dead or in jail soon. that is as uneducated, misinformed, patently racist a comment as i have heard a candidate make.

If you want to see pandering at its worst and funniest, watch democratic presidential candidates pander to the black community. Black candidates excepted of course. They are already black and don't feel the need to peddle their asses so thoroughly.

BTW, it was the congressional black caucus where Hillary promise 5k for every baby.

Or in 2000 when Gore and Bradley went to the Apollo Theatre in order to have a "dialogue" with the black community, which basically took the form of promising them free money. Bradley didn't even say he would rule out reparations that night.
