joey is addicted. he doesn't have an illness. he needs to break the addiction & stay clean. |
So true... My Dad had an alcohol problem and in those days (man, I feel old even typing that) there were NO fancy rehab programs, etc.
No one pitied him, in fact, the expectation from society was that he would pick himself and provide for his family. And that's exactly what he did.
My Dad went over 30 years without a drink until he was killed in a car accident at the age of 81. I'm sure it wasn't easy, but he found the inner strength and courage to simply stop.
I think it's a good thing that we have more support for addicts now than 30 years ago. However, that doesn't transfer the responsibility.
My Dad never blamed his parents, his upbringing or any other outside factors for his addiction. He took complete and total responsibility for his actions and NEVER wanted anyone's pity.
Joey, you CAN fix this problem.
The people who care about you most will not pity you, they'll give you support BUT also have a high level of expectations for you and your responsibility to correct this. |

AIDS isn't a disease either then because those who have it (barring children born with it) brought it upon themselves... right?
Addiction is a preventable and treatable disease. Where fault can be laid on a person who has it is in their unwillingness to get it treated. |
