NEW YORK -- Jimmy Rollins won the National League MVP award in a close race over Matt Holliday on Tuesday, boosted by speed and steady all-around play that drove the Philadelphia Phillies to their first playoff berth in 14 years.

The Gold Glove shortstop received 16 of 32 first-place votes and finished with 353 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Holliday, who led Colorado's surprising charge to the World Series, was the runner-up with 11 first-place votes and 336 points. Milwaukee slugger Prince Fielder came in third, with five first-place votes and 284 points.

Rollins batted .296 with 30 homers, 94 RBIs and 41 steals from the leadoff spot, helping Philadelphia rally from a big September deficit to win the NL East. He led the league in runs (139) and triples (20) and became the second consecutive Phillies player to win the MVP following Ryan Howard last year.

Rollins proved a prophet after saying in spring training that the Phillies were the team to beat in a competitive division.

Holliday, the NL championship series MVP, hit .340 with 137 RBIs -- becoming the third player since 1967 to lead a league in both categories. He also had 36 homers and topped the NL in hits (216), total bases (386) and doubles (50).

Jimmy Rollins edged Matt Holliday for NL MVP honors in balloting announced Tuesday.

Rollins won even though Holliday was first or second on 29 ballots, six more than the shortstop. That's because first-base votes are valued at 14 points, to nine for second-place votes. Rollins had 16 to Holliday's 11 and won by 17 points. Had first-place votes been scored at 10 points, Holliday would have won. Behind Rollins (353 points) and Holliday (336) in the voting were Prince Fielder (284), David Wright (182), Ryan Howard (112), Chipper Jones (107), Jake Peavy (97), Chase Utley (87), Albert Pujols (50) and Hanley Ramirez (49). Alfonso Soriano and Troy Tulowitzki got single third-place votes, and Carlos Marmol was listed 10th on someone's ballot (we're guessing it's the same person who voted Soriano third).

I'm glad Rollins won it he deserved it and it's nice having back to back MVP's, but I'd trade both MVP for 1 playoff win.

Add in he plays gold glove defense the guy is a great player and to me the best SS in baseball. Glad he backed up his we are the team to beat speak, but they need to focus on the playoffs. Winning the NL East means nothing if you get swept in the first round.

I won't argue with Rollins winning it, but my vote would have went to Fielder. It wasn't his fault they didn't make the playoffs. He carried that team.

holliday had a huge season...he was robbed

Rollins deserved it. He had a career year, and walked the walk. I wouldn't quite say he is the best SS in baseball though. I kind of have a feeling that Fielder's votes cost Holliday the MVP, by splitting the midwest and west votes. But none the less congrats to Jimmy Rollins.
