The Santana Watch is on
# From the Globe's Gordon Edes (4:39 p.m.): "The Newark Star Ledger just reported that the Yankees are out of the running for Johan Santana. One Sox source said he was skeptical that was the case. The Twins, meanwhile, have outrighted a player off their 40-man roster, the kind of move that often takes place before a trade, as they try to create roster space. The Commissioner, Peter Gammons, says a fifth player may be in the package that the Sox would give the Twins for Santana, minor league outfielder Ryan Kalish, but my Sox sources could not confirm that. The Sox people I'm talking to say they're still waiting."
# From the Herald's Rob Bradford (4:01 p.m.): "According to a source familiar with the negotiations the Twins have told [the Red Sox] they want to complete the Johan Santana deal by the end of today. |
|

| Here's the way I look at it, if the Sox get Santana & do not give up Ellsbury or Buchholz, look out, the Sox could be unstoppable in '08. I'd just as soon go after Haren & put him in the rotation after Beckett. If they did nothing major, got rid of no big time prospects, they'd still be the favorites in '08. No matter what they do, they'll be fine. They're playing with the house's money, so to speak. |

Julian Tavarez, who had his $3.85 million option picked up by Boston last month, is hoping to be traded to an NL team that would give him a chance to start.
It looks like the team will explore possibilities. The Rockies have displayed interest in the past and could still use him as a rotation candidate. The Red Sox would likely ask for bench help or a prospect in return. From the Rockies, that might mean Jeff Baker or Ryan Spilborghs. The Phillies and Astros could also be considered possible fits.

According to the Boston Globe, "the paucity of catching has the Red Sox contemplating bringing back Doug Mirabelli next season."
Mirabelli said earlier this month that he hopes to re-sign with Boston and continue as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher, but the Red Sox might be looking to upgrade after he hit just .191 and .202 over the past two seasons.

The Red Sox are said to be interested in Mike Lamb as a bench bat, but the Boston Globe reports that he's "out of their price range and probably will sign somewhere else as an everyday player."
Lamb hit .289/.366/.453 in 2007 and .307/.361/.475 in 2006, seemingly making him an attractive mid-level option at first or third base for teams like the Twins and Rangers.

It’s tough to figure out which free-agent reserve players the Sox might be interested in.
Epstein said Wednesday night that the team has an interest in approximately a half-dozen players, all of them role players.
Since the pool of backup catchers is rather shallow — Rod Barajas was considered, then ruled out — it’s a safe bet that most of the action centers on someone to replace Eric Hinske as the backup first baseman.
Russell Branyan has been talked about, though it seems he’s pretty far down on the list, probably because of his high strikeout totals.
Other possibilities could include Ryan Klesko and Corey Koskie, both of whom are left-handed — an added bonus.
From the right side, there’s Jeff Cirillo — who, like Koskie, plays third base — and Olmedo Saenz. |

While it is unclear what particular prospects the Sox have discussed with Baltimore, the Orioles have some of the same wants and needs as the Minnesota Twins, to whom the Sox were willing to deal, in an array of scenarios, Jon Lester [stats], Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury. From the start, however, the Sox made it clear to Minnesota that they would deal only one of those three top-level prospects.
In addition to a starting pitcher and center fielder, the O’s also are believed to be in the market for a first baseman, shortstop and closer. The Sox could address some of those needs with players like minor league infielder Jed Lowrie and reliever Manny Delcarmen, among others.
Bedard’s health is somewhat of a concern, too. He has never pitched as many as 200 innings in a season and finished 2007 on the disabled list with an oblique injury. Bedard also had tendon-transplant (or Tommy John) surgery early in his career, though he has clearly bounced back from that problem.
By all indications, Bedard’s salary for 2008 would be somewhere in the range of $6 million-$7 million. The pitcher avoided arbitration last offseason by agreeing to a one-year, $3.4 million contract with the Orioles. Because any team would have until the end of 2009 to sign Bedard to an extension, it could be argued that he comes with less long-term risk than Santana, who would require a contract extension from any team trading for him. |
|
|
| Apoc13 |
| The Sox have yet to complete their other shopping objectives: adding a lefthanded reserve corner infielder, a backup catcher, bullpen help, and a backup outfielder. They attracted interest for pitcher Julian Tavarez, and were also shopping around Kyle Snyder, David Pauley, and Craig Breslow, pitchers who are out of options. They have ready options available for some of their needs: re-signing Doug Mirabelli to catch (possible) and Bobby Kielty as a backup outfielder (likely), and using rookie Brandon Moss at first base (long shot). Depending on the Santana talks, they also would look to trade Coco Crisp, the center fielder currently part of the Lester package for Santana, though manager Terry Francona probably could find Crisp plenty of playing time as a fourth outfielder. |

Sox eyeing a half-dozen free agents
The Santana talks have been the talk of the winter meetings, but that's not all the Red Sox were working on in Nashville. According to the Globe's Amalie Benjamin, the Red Sox also have the "parameters" of deals to a half-dozen free agents. Though the Sox would not sign all of them, deals could come together quickly. ... The Herald's Michael Silverman doesn't think the Sox are going to go after any other "fall-back" starting pitchers should the Santana deal not come to fruition: "If the Sox do not land Santana, they are not expected to be major players in other available major or minor starting pitchers, and are not currently engaged in any such fall-back talks."
It also seems that Eric Gagne may not be on his way out of town just yet. Rob Bradford and Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald report that "one of the teams interested in signing [Gagne] was told by Gagne’s agent, Scott Boras, that his client could very well accept arbitration from the Red Sox by today’s deadline. If Gagne does elect to go to arbitration with the Sox, he would have to make no less than 20 percent below the $6 million salary he had last season. It would also mean the Sox would miss acquiring the draft pick they had coming if the reliever signed with another team."
The Herald's Tony Massarotti reported on December 7 that the Sox may be in the running for Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard, saying that "according to industry sources, the Red Sox and New York Yankees thus far have made the best offers for Bedard, a 28-year-old who is realizing his potential with the Baltimore Orioles. The primary obstacle in any deal involving the Sox or Yankees is the reluctance of Baltimore owner Peter Angelos to trade within the division, even though the Orioles seem intent on embarking on a full youth movement." |

Jacoby Ellsbury, who survived the winter meetings and remains the hot property of the Red Sox, will be appearing in Boston today, and in North Attleborough tomorrow, in a couple of autograph signing events.
Ellsbury will be appearing at the F.Y.E. store at 411 Washington Street Boston, at 4 p.m. today to sign copies of the Red Sox 2007 World Series DVD.
Ellsbury is also signing autographs tomorrow at Emerald Square Mall in North Attleborough at Sports Treasures, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will cost fans $125.00 to get a baseball or photograph (up to 16x20) signed by the Sox rookie outfielder (you provide the item). For $150.00, Ellsbury will autograph a baseball bat or jersey/shirt.
Ellsbury will not be posing for photographs at the Sports Treasures signing, according to store owner David Paulhus, but you may be allowed to take a picture of the Sox rookie signing items.
And at this hour, there has been no indication that Ellsbury's agent, the venerable Scott Boras, will be appearing at either of the signing events.
In a comments section posting on Curt Schilling's 38Pitches.com site this afternoon, a poster was "somewhat taken aback/astounded" at the news of the Ellsbury appearances this weekend.
"Granted, I’m sure that there are many that will gladly pony up, and many ’sports collectible’ dealers that will also," someone under the the user name marcomarco wrote. "He [Ellsbury] may be in another market soon, and might as well 'Get while the getting’s good', but he hasn’t played enough to even qualify as a rookie!"
Schilling was asked about player appearances and autograph fees.
"Players and their agents negotiate appearance fees," Schilling wrote. "The agent generally takes a percentage. I no longer do public signings where cash is required at the autograph table, it’s way too messy and uncomfortable.
"I have a lady named Katie Leighton who handles my off the field PR/Marketing that oversees this stuff. The only signings we’ve done since 2004 involved ALS or Shade. I signed a private exclusive deal after the 2004 season with Steiner Sports that allowed me to not have to do these public events if we chose not to. I don’t ‘charge’ for autographs in that sense since I don’t do these shows anymore. Many of the outlets to sign autographs have removed the player/fan thing that autographs began as. It’s horribly uncomfortable." |

The bus trips will be fewer in spring training in 2008 for the Red Sox, an apparent concession to the 15,865 miles the Sox will travel (as the crow flies) from the time they break camp in Fort Myers, Fla., March 19 until they play their scheduled home opener in Boston, April 6th.
The Sox released their abbreviated Florida exhibition schedule yesterday, and the team has squeezed in 13 home games in City of Palms Park, with an additional three games against the Minnesota Twins in cross-town Hammond Stadium, for a total of 16 games within the city limits of Fort Myers.
The exhibition schedule begins with a split-squad doubleheader Feb. 28 against college teams, Boston College in the afternoon, Northeastern at 6:05.
The Sox play their final game in Florida March 19 at home against the Blue Jays, then intend to fly to Tokyo (7,362 miles). They will play two exhibitions there against Japanese teams yet to be announced before opening the regular season with two games against the Oakland Athletics March 25-26. The Sox then fly to Los Angeles (5,478 miles) for three exhibitions against the Dodgers, head up the coast to Oakland (331 miles) for two more games against the Athletics, then fly to Toronto (2,261 miles) for three games against the Blue Jays, completing what is believed to be baseball's first three-country road trip. Another 433-mile jaunt will be required to bring the Sox home. |

Report: Sox opposed to including Ellsbury
From the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Charley Walters (Dec. 19): "The Boston Red Sox remain the favorite to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins, insiders say. Boston remains firm, though, as initially reported by the Pioneer Press, in offering just Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. The Red Sox are adamantly opposed to substituting Jacoby Ellsbury for Crisp, and that's the current holdup. Regardless, there's buzz that the Santana trade could be made within days. Boston has a larger pool of players who interest Minnesota and can contribute to the Twins immediately, whereas many of the New York Yankees' top prospects are at least a season or two away from succeeding in the major leagues. The Yankees remain firmly opposed to trading pitchers Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy together for Santana, and they certainly won't trade Joba Chamberlain. The dark horse for Santana remains the Angels, who have enough young players to appease the Twins, but they have been quiet, much the same as they were before popping out of the weeds with a $90 million, five-year free-agent offer for Torii Hunter." |

WHOOOOO!!" i can get a chop of him dancing... i can also get a bit where he's leading everybody running in place. i can also do the obvious and make it look very gay, but i'm all shtick'd out with the champagne pic already.
i'll chop it up and post em here for you guys, b/c you are all such swell guys. |

If you're that pissed and upset about this thread, with one click of the button I can make it so that you can't post in here. Seems to me that's what you're asking for, am I wrong? :jj:
Take your meds and calm down, getting excited can't be good for your crippled legs. :D |
