| Will The Mets or Yankees make any big trades or signings before the season starts? Can the Yankees really rely on guys like Giambi and Mussina? Can the Mets really rely on Alou and El Duque? |

Oh, yes I'm sure you will write back telling us all about how you were a Sox fan your entire life, but nobody cares. Theo Epstien is the best thing to ever happen to that team, they have finally woke up and learned to put the revenue back on the field, just like you Sox fans bashed the Yanks for doing for years. Welcome to the club, and thanks for the competition and making the AL East fun. You can probably expect to win another division before The Yankees get rid of Brian Cashman and start signing some veteran pitching. |

Don't worry your little brain, I have already worked for the Mets front office, and I treated my position with great respect regardless of my love for the NY Yankees. I will be graduating from law school in 2011, and I'm sure I won't see you when I am working for a team or even the Commissioner's office. Happy New Year. | Just what the world needs, another lawyer. As far as being an elitist, I have never met an elitist who enlisted in the Navy at 18 years old. I also never met one who worked for the Sheriff's Dept for 2 years. Nice try. I have been a Yankees fan since roughly 2001, although I identified with the team since I was serving in Japan. I have never watched a Championship besides on DVD, so I am still waiting to witness one. Hopefully 2008 will be the year. I envy the Boston Championships I had to sit through, and I attribute it to Epstein. Hopefully the Yanks will get a new GM soon, because Red Sox fans are getting a little too arrogant. Happy New Year. |

Okay, I love all the tough guy ePosturing, but seriously I started this thread in Ferrall because I want to hear thoughtful comments about NY pitching, not "Yankees Suck", "Mets Suck", "Boston Rules" etc. We all know that the Red Sox are currently world champions. Congratulations, I believe I respectfully acknowledged that fact more than once. That being said, I would prefer Ferrall fans make some comments pertaining to the thread.
Yes, I believe Cashman is a HUGE problem when you look at the pitching he has wasted roster spots on... for example:
Carl Pavano
Esteban Loaiza
Kyle Farnsworth
JAret Wright
Javier Vasquez
Kevin Brown
Kei Igawa
And countless others.
The guy is great at bringing up solid position players, and signing terrific guys to play every day, but when it comes to pitching, he fails miserably. |

I am NOT a fan of football at all, but I do enjoy the basketball games. I go there for the education, NOT the football. Unfortunately for my classmates Penn State football SUCKS, and they have a joke for a quarterback, I feel sorry for the fans. |

I am a Mets fan so I will comment on them. Does not take a genius to know what they need. At least one front line starter(just like the need of 90% of MLB), they also need a descent 4th starter who can EAT INNINGS. He does not need to win 15 games, but he needs to be able to keep his team in the game and EAT INNINGS. I also think the Mets need some bullpen help. However again, 90% of the league needs a reliable bullpen guy. I think with guys like Sanchez and Padilla coming back. Along with guys like Feliciano and Smith. There is a chance they can have a better bullpen just from within the team.
However they are not winning anything with their current group of starters. Something needs to change or there will be more of the same. Again though, 90% of baseball is in the same situation  |

06 Mets and Tigers saw success for the first time in a few years, built on strong starting pitching, adequate offense and great bullpen. Both teams went deep in the post season, yet in 07 they had similar issues:
Loss of Ace: Kenny Rogers and Pedro Martinez both missed most of the season
Loss of intimidating bullpen staff member: Joel Zumaya and Duaner Sanchez have been plagued with injuries
Signed injury prone outfielder: Sheffield and Alou both got hurt and missed time
Even though Magglio Ordenez and David Wright put their respective teams on their backs, they failed to make the post-season.
Can you think of other similarities? |

Unfortunately I think the biggest difference is managing.
Detroit has a proven winner in Leyland who has always gotten the very best from his players. Randolph has now showin he can do 1/10 the job that Leyland can.
That is what worries me.. |

That is what worries me.. | I like Randolph, and I think he is a great leader. Leyland had AS BAD a season as Wilie in 07.
What worries me about the Mets is the lack of a blockbuster like the Cabrera/Willis deal in Detroit, and lets not forget Renteria signed to play short.
When will Omar make some big moves like this? Church, Schnieder and the addition by subtraction of Loduca, Milledge and Estrada(who never even lace up his spikes) doesn't cut it. |

Truce? | Ok, Chief, here a major problem as I see it. Hank is in charge. What has this clown ever done to suggest that he can run a ballclub? He is the second choice behind his brother in law who shit the bed & blew a great gig. So now Hank is the man? The Yankees will live to regret Steve Swindell fuckin' around on Steinbrenner's daughter. All I've seen from the second choice is a lot of bluster. The Yankees are playing catch up to the Sox now because the Sox have developed pitching & players that they can deal for established pitching. They have built on orginization that, top to bottom, covers all of the bases, so to speak. The Yankees need to stop trying to put an all star at every position & put in place guys who can do the little things that win ball games. Johnny Damon, you can have him. Abreu, the most overrated outfielder in baseball. Have you ever seen a player take the warning track so seriously? They've tied up alot of money in players who, by the time their contracts are up, will be a major albatross around their collective necks. While they have developed some young talent they are still making some of the same mistakes they've made over the last several seasons. Meanwhile most of what the Redsox have done seems to work. That starts at the top with John Henry & Lucchino & Theo on down. Like David Ortiz said during the playoffs again'st Cleveland " Look at your chest, that says Redsox. We're bad motherfuckers!" |

The Yankees have proven that buying all stars isnt how you win a championship...It has worked in winning pennants but once it gets to the most important time which is the post season these super stars under perform and its my opinion that its because they have the pressure of being expected to perform, they get the big money, they are paid so much because they are so good, the yankee philosophy is you dont win you fail, so they put so much stress on themselves that they choke...Like you said, they need players who do the little things that win ball games well...A winning team doesn't need a bunch or big egos... |
